Short answer: If you mean the current transition from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, compatibility is broad. PS5 runs the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games, while Xbox Series X|S runs most Xbox One games and a selected catalogue of Xbox 360 and original Xbox titles. Disc requirements, title-specific exceptions and the difference between backward compatibility and a native upgrade still matter.
If you mean consoles that will follow PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the answer is not settled. Microsoft has announced a future Xbox project, currently called Project Helix, and says it is designed to play Xbox console and PC games. Sony has not established a backward-compatibility policy for a PS5 successor in the official material available here. No future console should be treated as guaranteed to run every current-generation game until its manufacturer publishes a title-level policy.
First, define “next generation”
The phrase is used for two different questions:

The rest of this guide separates those situations so you do not confuse an established current-generation feature with a promise about unreleased hardware.

Most PS4 games are playable
PlayStation’s current support guidance says the overwhelming majority of more than 4,000 PS4 games can be played on PS5. “Overwhelming majority” is not a promise that all software behaves perfectly. PlayStation warns that some games may lack functionality, display errors or behave unexpectedly. A title can therefore be classed as playable while still having a limitation that matters to you.

Some games receive benefits through Game Boost, such as improved or more consistent performance where the title supports it. Game Boost is not a universal remaster: it does not give every PS4 game the same frame rate, resolution, loading behavior or visual features.
Playing a digital PS4 purchase
- Sign in to the same PlayStation account used to buy the game.
- Open your game library on PS5 and locate the PS4 title. PlayStation says eligible digital purchases appear in the library after sign-in.
- Download the game and any available updates, then start it from the game hub.
- Check the game’s own information panel for a PS5 version or upgrade offer before paying for additional content.
Your save transfer depends on the game and the transfer method you choose. PlayStation Plus cloud storage can be used for saves under the service’s terms; it is not a blanket guarantee that every game supports every transfer route.
Playing a PS4 disc
A PS4 disc requires a PS5 model with a disc drive. Insert the disc, install the game and keep the disc inserted whenever you want to launch the installed copy. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot read PS4 game discs, even though it can run compatible digital PS4 purchases.
PlayStation’s compatibility guidance also says PS5 does not support PS3 discs. A PS3 physical collection therefore cannot be treated like the supported PS4 disc library.
Backward compatibility is not the same as a PS5 upgrade
An eligible PS4 game may offer a game-specific digital PS5 upgrade. The offer can be free or paid, depending on the publisher, title and promotion. The compatible PS4 edition itself remains a separate experience from acquiring a native PS5 edition.
For a disc-based upgrade, you need a PS5 model with a disc drive. The console downloads the PS5 version, but the qualifying PS4 disc remains tied to access: keep it inserted to play. A digital-edition PS5 cannot use that disc-based upgrade path.

PS4 and PS5 multiplayer
Players using the same multiplayer PS4 game can play together when one person is on PS4 and another is running that PS4 game on PS5 through backward compatibility. This applies to the particular game and its online service; it is not a guarantee that every game supports cross-generation play or that its servers remain available.
Xbox One games on Xbox Series X and Series S
Most Xbox One games work
Xbox states that most Xbox One games play on Xbox Series X|S. The platform’s backward-compatibility effort includes selected Xbox 360 and original Xbox games as well. Older-generation support is selective, so you must check the supported catalogue for the exact title rather than assuming that every disc or download from those generations works.
Xbox describes more than 500,000 hours of testing and quality-standard work for its Series X|S compatibility effort. That figure describes Microsoft’s programme; it does not mean every compatible game has identical resolution, frame rate, feature support or bug behavior.
Using digital Xbox games
- Sign in on the Series X or Series S with the Microsoft account that owns the digital game.
- Open your games and apps library and look for the title. Supported digital games appear in the install library.
- Install the game and apply available updates.
- For an Xbox 360 or original Xbox title, confirm that the specific game appears in the supported backward-compatibility catalogue before expecting it to install.
Using an Xbox disc
Xbox Series X has a disc drive. For a supported physical title, insert the disc and let the console download the compatible game data. The disc must remain inserted whenever you play, because it acts as the ownership check.
Xbox Series S is digital-only. It cannot read Xbox One, Xbox 360 or original Xbox game discs. A physical copy can be used only if you also own a supported digital entitlement or purchase the game digitally.

Backward compatibility for those generations is a curated catalogue, not a hardware-level promise. Licensing, technical dependencies and publisher participation can affect whether an individual game is included. Search the official supported list by title before buying a used disc or planning a move from older hardware.

Compatibility, enhancement and remaster: three different outcomes
Readers often use “works” to mean several different things. Check which outcome you are actually seeking:

Buying a compatible old edition does not automatically grant every feature of a native edition. Conversely, a game can run well through backward compatibility without offering a free upgrade.
What is known about consoles after PS5 and Xbox Series X|S?
Microsoft’s Project Helix
On March 11, 2026, Jason Ronald, Microsoft’s vice president for Next Generation, said Project Helix “is designed to play your Xbox console and PC games, delivering leading performance and ushering in the next generation of console gaming.” Microsoft also said it remains committed to keeping games from four Xbox generations playable “for years to come.”

Those statements establish a direction, not a per-title guarantee. Microsoft has not published a complete compatibility table for Project Helix in the cited announcement. There is no announced percentage of current Xbox Series X|S games that will work, and no consumer launch date stated there.
Microsoft said developer hardware alpha versions are planned to begin shipping in 2027. That is a development milestone for testing hardware, not a promised retail-release date. The final name, specifications, pricing, launch regions and disc policy may differ from the development plan.
Sony’s next PlayStation is unresolved
The official Sony material covered here explains PS4-to-PS5 compatibility, but it does not establish a policy for a console that would succeed PS5. Do not infer that PS5 discs, digital licences or saves will work on a future PlayStation simply because most PS4 games work on PS5. Wait for a specific Sony announcement covering formats, accounts, upgrades and supported titles.

How to check a game before you buy it
- Identify the generation and edition. Record whether the game is a PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox 360 or original Xbox release. Different editions can have different entitlements.
- Identify the copy format. A digital purchase follows the account that owns it; a disc requires a compatible drive and normally must remain inserted.
- Check the manufacturer’s title-level list. This is essential for Xbox 360 and original Xbox games and useful for any title with unusual licensing or online requirements.
- Read the upgrade terms. Look for free versus paid access, regional restrictions, disc requirements and whether downloadable content carries over.
- Check current service status. A game can install and run while its multiplayer servers, online features or downloadable content are discontinued.
- Test before buying add-ons. PlayStation specifically recommends trying a compatible PS4 game before purchasing add-ons because some functionality may be unavailable or unexpected.
Common mistakes and their fixes
“Every PS4 game is a PS5 game”
Why it fails: Most PS4 games are supported, but PlayStation documents exceptions, missing functionality and unexpected behavior.

“A PS4 disc works in any PS5”
Why it fails: The PS5 Digital Edition has no disc drive.

Why it fails: The disc remains the licence check for a disc-based upgrade.

“Series S can install my Xbox One discs”
Why it fails: Series S accepts digital games only.
Fix: Redeem or buy a supported digital version, or use a console with a disc drive.
“Four Xbox generations means every game from four generations”
Why it fails: Microsoft’s future commitment describes a goal, not a published list or a quantified success rate.
Fix: Treat each game as unconfirmed until Microsoft lists it for the relevant console.

For the established PS4-to-PS5 and Xbox One-to-Series X|S transitions, you can carry forward a large existing library, provided you match the game to the right account, disc drive and supported catalogue. Older Xbox support is selective, PS3 discs are not supported on PS5, and a playable older edition is not automatically a native upgrade.
For the generation after PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, Xbox has stated an ambitious compatibility direction through Project Helix, with developer hardware planned for 2027, but title-by-title and consumer details remain unavailable. Sony’s successor compatibility policy is likewise unannounced in the cited official material. Plan purchases around confirmed current support, not assumptions about unreleased consoles.
