Short answer: not automatically. A PlayStation 5 does not play PlayStation 3 game discs, and Sony’s standard backward-compatibility policy is aimed at PlayStation 4 games. Older games that appear on a newer console may instead be a separately supported digital classic, a remaster or remake, or a cloud-streamed version. Some selected classics have higher-quality resolution or improved frame rates, but Sony has never promised those enhancements for every PS2 or PS3 title.
To know what you will actually see and feel, identify the exact game listing, edition, region and delivery method. A local digital classic can preserve the original game while changing its output; a remaster or remake can change assets and presentation; streaming adds image quality and responsiveness variables caused by your connection.
What “original graphics and performance” can mean
People use “original” to describe several different things. Separating them prevents a misleading yes-or-no answer.
Game content and assets
This is the underlying game: models, textures, animation, sound, levels, rules and code. A digital classic may keep most of that original content even if it runs through a modern emulator or wrapper. A remaster can replace textures, lighting, menus or audio while retaining the same game structure. A remake may rebuild much of the game in a new engine, so its visual identity and performance are not the original release’s.

Rendered resolution and display output
A game can retain its original assets but be rendered internally at a different resolution or output through a higher-quality scaling mode. “Higher-quality resolution” therefore does not prove that the original art was redrawn. Conversely, a modern television can upscale an unchanged low-resolution image without the game itself becoming a remaster.
Frame rate and frame pacing
Frame rate is how often the game produces a new image; frame pacing is how evenly those images arrive. A title that originally targeted 30 frames per second may run more smoothly in a supported modern release, but the official material does not publish a universal per-game list of old and new frame rates. Do not infer a specific number from the console, the subscription tier or a store badge.
Does a PS5 play PS2 or PS3 discs?
For PS3 discs, the answer is no. Sony’s PS5 backward-compatibility guidance says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. You cannot insert a PS3 Blu-ray and expect the PS5 to install or run it.
Recommended Free Tools
The same guidance describes compatibility with the overwhelming majority of PS4 games. It also discusses Game Boost for selected PS4 software. That policy is not a general statement that PS2 or PS3 software runs from its original discs. Sony’s current support pages do not establish PS2 disc compatibility, so a PS2 disc should not be treated as a guaranteed PS5 path either.
If you own an original disc, check whether the publisher released a separate PS5 or PS4 version, whether your disc qualifies for an upgrade, and whether the current store listing offers a digital license. Those are title-specific arrangements, not consequences of simply owning a newer console.
How older games are delivered on a newer console
“Available on PS5” can describe very different products. Use the format, not the generation label, to predict graphics and responsiveness.
| Format | What you are running | What to expect about the original presentation |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS3 disc | Physical PS3 release inserted into a PS5 | Unsupported on PS5 according to Sony’s backward-compatibility guidance. |
| Digital classic | A separately supported listing distributed for a newer console | May preserve original content while using modern rendering or emulation features; check the individual listing. |
| Remaster | A revised release of the older game | Assets, resolution, frame rate, controls or presentation may be changed. |
| Remake | A substantially rebuilt version | Expect a new technical presentation rather than the original release unchanged. |
| Cloud-streamed classic | The service runs the game remotely and sends video to your console | Image quality and input response depend on the service and your connection as well as the title. |
Sony’s May 23, 2022 PlayStation Plus announcement distinguishes downloadable remastered or remade PS2/PS3 games from streaming access to original-generation titles. It also says that “some titles will show improved frame rates and higher-quality resolution compared to their original launch versions.” The limiting words are important: some titles, not every classic.

PS2 games can appear in several forms: a digital classic, a remaster, a remake or, in supported markets and periods, a streamed original-generation title. The 2022 PlayStation Plus announcement described downloadable remastered or remade PS2 games and streaming access to original PS2-era titles through the Premium plan in supported markets. That announcement explains the product categories; it does not guarantee that every title remains available today.

For a digital classic, look for title-specific information rather than assuming the disc image is untouched. The game may retain its original models and textures but be displayed through a higher-quality output mode. If the listing calls the product a remaster or remake, treat it as a changed release even when the story and level design are familiar.
There is no official, complete table covering every PS2 title’s original resolution, original frame rate and current-console values. Without title-specific documentation, the accurate claim is limited to Sony’s general statement that selected classics can receive improvements.
What to expect from PS3-era games
The current United States PlayStation Plus games catalog says classic PS3 games in the Classics Catalog are available via streaming only. That means the PS5 is receiving a video stream rather than downloading a local PS3 executable for those catalog entries. Eligibility can change, and a title can be absent in another country, so use the listing for your market.
Sony’s support page for the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog explains that only eligible games can be streamed and that the correct subscription plan is required. A catalog entry therefore does not imply that a PS3 disc works, that a local download exists, or that the stream reproduces the original image without network processing.
Streaming also changes the performance question. The remote game may run at its supported frame rate, but your experience can include compression, buffering or input delay. Those network effects are separate from the game’s original frame-rate target.
How enhancements can change the experience
Resolution improvements
Sony’s public wording is “higher-quality resolution” for some classics. It does not provide a universal number such as 1080p or 4K for all PS2 and PS3 games. A higher-quality output can mean cleaner scaling or a different render path; it does not necessarily mean new textures or redesigned geometry.
Frame-rate improvements
Some supported classics may show improved frame rates compared with their original launch versions. Because the statement is title-selective, do not promise 60 frames per second, unlocked performance or identical frame pacing unless the game’s own documentation confirms it.

For cloud play, the service’s video stream is another layer. Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum connection speed for streaming PlayStation Plus games and 15 Mbps for 1080p streaming when the game supports 1080p. If the connection falls below what the stream needs, resolution can drop. These figures describe service requirements, not the game’s native render resolution or original frame rate.

| Streaming figure | Meaning |

| 15 Mbps | Minimum listed for 1080p streaming when the game supports that resolution. |
A wired connection or a strong, uncongested Wi-Fi network can reduce local causes of buffering, but no connection can turn a title that lacks 1080p support into a native 1080p game.
How to check one specific game before you buy or subscribe
- Search the current PlayStation Store or PlayStation Plus catalog for the exact title. Match the spelling, edition and release year; similarly named ports can be different products.
- Read the product format. Determine whether the listing is a PS5/PS4 download, a classic, a remaster, a remake or a streamed PS3 entry. Do not treat a trailer or a console-generation label as proof of format.
- Check the delivery action. A download option indicates local installation; a stream option indicates cloud delivery. If only streaming is shown, plan for the bandwidth and latency requirements.
- Confirm the subscription tier and region. PlayStation Plus Premium includes cloud streaming and the Classics Catalog in the United States plan overview, but catalog and streaming availability vary by market and title. Use the plan information for your account’s country at PlayStation Plus.
- Look for title-specific technical notes. Only a title’s own documentation can establish a particular resolution, frame-rate mode, widescreen treatment or enhancement. In the absence of such notes, describe the presentation as unconfirmed rather than assigning numbers.
- Check the date of the listing. Catalog membership and service eligibility can change. A reference to a launch-era announcement is not proof that the same game is still offered today.
Controls and practical streaming details
PS3 games streamed through the service may use the touchpad on a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 to represent the original controller’s SELECT and START buttons. PlayStation Support maps SELECT to the left side and START to the right side of the touchpad; you must click the side, not merely tap it. This matters for menus, save screens and games that depend on those buttons.
Streaming also means that a pause, input or camera turn travels to a remote server and returns as video. A fast connection helps, but distance to the service, household traffic and wireless interference can still affect responsiveness. If a game is timing-sensitive, compare the streamed experience with a local version when one is legitimately available rather than assuming the two feel identical.

- “Backward compatible” means every older disc works. Sony’s PS5 guidance is primarily about PS4 compatibility and explicitly excludes PS3 discs. Read the supported-format statement instead of relying on the generation label.
- A classic, remaster and remake are interchangeable names. They are not. A remaster can alter assets and performance; a remake can rebuild the game; a classic may aim to preserve the original content with technical adjustments.
- 1080p streaming means the game renders natively at 1080p. The 15 Mbps figure is a service requirement, and Sony qualifies it by saying the game must support that resolution.
- A smoother video proves a higher game frame rate. Display processing and stream delivery can look smoother without changing the game’s simulation or frame-rate target.
- A United States catalog entry applies everywhere. Catalog, plan and streaming availability are market-dependent. Check the account region and local listing.
- A launch announcement guarantees current access. Sony’s 2022 announcement explains the service design at launch. Current availability must be confirmed in the present catalog.
- One game’s enhancement applies to the whole series. Improvements are selected by title. Do not generalize from one release to every PS2 or PS3 game.
A quick decision framework
If you own a PS3 disc
Keep using compatible PS3 hardware or locate an official digital, remastered or remade release. A PS5 will not read the disc.
If you want the closest local version
Choose a downloadable classic or a current remaster only after checking its edition notes. Local play avoids stream-dependent image changes and latency, but it still may not reproduce the original output exactly.
If the game is listed only for streaming
Verify that your region and subscription include it, meet the 5 Mbps minimum (15 Mbps for supported 1080p streaming), and expect connection-dependent quality. Treat the stream as a service version, not as the original disc running unchanged in your console.
If preserving the original look is the priority
Find title-specific technical documentation or use the original hardware and release. General PlayStation statements cannot establish exact resolution and frame-rate parity for an individual game.

Bottom line
Newer consoles do not automatically preserve PS2 and PS3 graphics or performance. PS5 does not support PS3 discs, PS2 disc support is not established by Sony’s current backward-compatibility guidance, and older games offered today can be classics, remasters, remakes or streams. Sony confirms that selected classics may have improved frame rates or higher-quality resolution, while PS3 classics in the current US catalog are streaming-only. Check the exact listing, market, edition, delivery method and title-specific technical notes before assuming you are getting the original release unchanged.
