Google says Pixel 10 and later phones support Qi2, except Pixel 10a. An older Qi1.x pad may still charge one of these phones, but Google says it will charge at up to 5 W—not at the faster rates available with Qi2. That makes an old pad potentially slow or finicky, rather than categorically incompatible. Whether a particular setup works depends on the pad, placement, case and power source.
What happens when you use an old Qi pad?
Google Pixel Help says older Qi1.x chargers will still work with supported newer Pixels, but charge at up to 5 W. That is Google’s stated compatibility guidance, not an independent test of every charger or a guarantee that every pad will work reliably in every setup. If your old pad charges inconsistently—or not at all—alignment, a case, the power supply or heat may be involved.
Google recommends a Qi2-certified charger for the fastest wireless charging. Qi2 adds magnetic alignment: magnets help position the phone and charger together. A non-magnetic Qi1.x pad does not provide that alignment, so you may need to reposition the phone to find a working spot.

Google’s current guidance covers Pixel 10 and later, excluding Pixel 10a. The maximum rates Google lists for its Pixelsnap charger vary by model:

These are Google’s product specifications, not independent measurements or a promise that the phone will sustain the maximum rate in everyday conditions. Google says the compatible adapter is sold separately for the Pixelsnap charger. The 5 W figure for older Qi1.x pads is a separate, slower fallback; it does not mean an old pad can deliver the Pixelsnap rates.
Does Qi2 work with older phones, too?
Compatibility is not automatically reciprocal. Google cautions that Qi2 does not guarantee backward compatibility with older, non-magnetic Qi1.x devices when using Pixelsnap, and does not recommend the Pixelsnap Charger for previous Pixel phones that lack Qi2 magnetic alignment. This is distinct from an older Qi1.x pad charging a newer Qi2 Pixel at up to 5 W.

How to troubleshoot an old pad before replacing it
- Check the charger’s certification. Look up the product in the Wireless Power Consortium product database. Google says a Qi2 product’s database version number should start with 2. A product’s appearance or marketing alone does not establish Qi2 certification.
- Test alignment without the case. Remove the case and place the phone in different positions on the pad. If charging improves, the case or positioning may be interfering. For regular use, Google advises a Qi2-compatible case or removing an unsupported case.
- Check the power supply. A pad’s behavior depends on its power source as well as the phone. If using Pixelsnap and aiming for its documented rates, Google recommends a USB-C power adapter rated at 20 W or higher for up to 15 W charging, or 35 W or higher for up to 25 W on Pixel 10 Pro XL.
- Let a warm phone cool. Google says wireless charging may pause if the phone gets too warm, then resume after it cools. A pause in that situation does not by itself show that the charger is incompatible.
Should you keep the old pad or get a Qi2 charger?
Keep a functioning Qi1.x pad if its slower charging suits your needs. Choose a Qi2-certified charger if you want magnetic alignment and the higher charging rate your specific phone supports. Before buying, verify certification in the WPC database and check that the charger, adapter and case fit your intended setup; Qi2 certification alone does not make every accessory or configuration identical.
