There is no established plan to revive Sora. OpenAI’s official notice says the Sora web and app experiences ended on April 26, 2026, and the Sora API ended on September 24, 2026. OpenAI has said its world-simulation research for robotics will continue, but that is a research direction—not an announcement that the Sora product or API will return.
Is OpenAI planning to revive Sora?
No revival plan appears in the official status information or reporting available here. That does not prove Sora will never return; it means there is no confirmed relaunch to report. OpenAI’s Help Center lists the two shutdown dates, while reporting on the decision describes a shift in priorities rather than a planned return.
In reporting by Axios, an OpenAI spokesperson said the company would continue work on “world simulation research to advance robotics that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks.” Continuing that research does not establish that OpenAI will restore Sora as a consumer app, website, or API.

OpenAI launched Sora 2 on September 30, 2025, describing it as a video-and-audio generation model and social app. The launch announcement said the initial rollout was in the United States and Canada and that OpenAI planned to release Sora 2 in the API. Why did OpenAI discontinue Sora?
The public reporting describes a strategic and resource-allocation context. Axios reported that OpenAI was narrowing its focus and reallocating human and computer resources, and that Sora used significant compute. OpenAI’s Help Center notice does not provide a detailed rationale, so those reported factors should not be presented as an official explanation from that notice.
Safety and rights concerns were also part of the public debate. The Associated Press reported concerns about nonconsensual images and realistic deepfakes, including pressure over generated depictions of public figures. Did the Disney arrangement go ahead?
No. Axios reported that a proposed arrangement involved licensing more than 200 Disney characters and a planned $1 billion investment, but the deal was off and no money had changed hands, according to a source familiar with the situation. The Associated Press reported Disney’s statement that it respected OpenAI’s decision to exit video generation and shift priorities. This was a reported arrangement that did not proceed as planned, not a current partnership or completed investment.
What should former Sora users do?
OpenAI directs users to sora.chatgpt.com/sunset to export their creations. The Help Center recommends exporting as soon as possible. It says associated data will be permanently deleted after any final export window, if one is offered, passes; the notice does not establish a universal final-window date.
OpenAI’s notice also says purchased ChatGPT or Sora credits can still be used for Codex. Check the official discontinuation page for the current account-specific instructions and any applicable export window.

A robotics research update, a new video model, or discussion of simulation is not by itself a Sora relaunch. A confirmed return would require an explicit OpenAI announcement identifying the product or API and explaining availability. Until then, the accurate answer is that Sora has ended on the published dates and no revival plan has been established.
