Nintendo has not announced that it will stop selling physical games. In a May 2024 financial-results briefing, company president Shuntaro Furukawa said Nintendo’s objective was to maximize game software sales, including physical software, and that this policy would remain unchanged. He also said Nintendo expected more consumers to choose digital products as they became more useful and convenient. That is a commitment to a dual-format business objective—not a promise to release physical games forever.

What Nintendo said about physical games

In its May 8, 2024 Q&A summary, Nintendo attributed this answer to President Shuntaro Furukawa: “Our objective is not to simply increase the share of digital sales, but to maximize overall game software sales, including sales of physical software.” He added: “This policy will remain unchanged going forward.” Nintendo’s financial-results briefing Q&A summary is the primary source for those remarks.

The wording matters. Nintendo described its objective for overall software sales; it did not say in that briefing that physical releases would continue indefinitely or that every game would receive a physical edition. The headline phrase “no plans to abandon physical media” is a broad paraphrase, not a verbatim quotation from Furukawa’s answer.

Why the policy does not rule out more digital games

Furukawa also said Nintendo believed more consumers might choose digital products with the Switch successor if digital content continued to become more useful and convenient. The two statements fit together: Nintendo said it intended to maximize total software sales, including physical sales, while recognizing that consumer choices could shift toward digital.

Minecraft - Nintendo Switch
  • Minecraft is a game about placing blocks and going on adventures
  • Explore randomly generated worlds and build amazing things from the simplest of homes to the grandest of castles
  • Play in creative mode with unlimited resources or mine deep into the world in survival mode, crafting weapons and armor to fend off the dangerous mobs
  • Play on the go in handheld or tabletop modes
  • Includes Super Mario Mash-Up, Natural Texture Pack, Biome Settlers Skin Pack, Battle & Beasts Skin Pack, Campfire Tales Skin Pack; Compatible with Nintendo Switch only

So the practical reading is neither “Nintendo is ending physical games” nor “physical releases are guaranteed forever.” The statement supports the continued importance of physical software in Nintendo’s business objective at that time, while leaving room for changing formats and buying habits.

What Nintendo’s Game-Key Card statement covers

A separate, narrower statement concerns Game-Key Cards on Switch 2. In May 2025, Nintendo UK told Nintendo Life: “We currently have no plans to use game-key cards for Nintendo-developed titles.” Nintendo Life’s report gives the context and quotes the response.

  • Challenge others anytime, anywhere, whether you're on the couch or on the go
  • Play any way you want—locally, online, in TV mode, Tabletop mode, Handheld mode, or even with GameCube Controllers
  • Fight faster and smarter with new and returning techniques, like the perfect shield and directional air dodge
  • Face off in 2-4 player battles, or play against the computer

This is not a blanket statement about all physical games. It is limited to Nintendo-developed titles, and “currently” makes it time-qualified. It does not establish that every Nintendo-published game made by a partner, or every third-party game, will avoid Game-Key Cards. Nintendo of America President Doug Bowser described physical games as “still a key part of our business” and said Game-Key Cards give publishing partners a way to bring deeper and larger content to the platform.

How to check what a Switch 2 physical release includes

Do not infer what is in a particular box from Nintendo’s general policy or its statement about Nintendo-developed titles. Check the individual game’s packaging and title-specific information, especially if you want a playable game stored on the card rather than a card that requires a download.

Tomodachi Life: Living the Dream
  • Populate your island with Mii characters and watch them come to life
  • Base your Mii characters on family and friends, or whatever you want—and customizer, including some face customization options you haven’t seen before
  • Pick your Mii characters up and place them near each other to chat and hang out
  • Help your Mii characters explore likes and dislikes, find relationships, and get up to all sorts of fun
  • Give Mii characters clothes, food, items, and life advice as they deal with all kinds of situations
  • Identify the developer and publisher. Nintendo’s reported no-plans statement applies to Nintendo-developed titles; it does not cover every partner or third-party release.
  • Check the card type. A physical package may contain a cartridge with the playable game or a Game-Key Card that requires downloading the game. Confirm the specific title and regional package details.
  • Check digital requirements separately. Updates, add-on content, and online features can have their own download or service requirements, even when a game is sold physically.

Physical ownership does not guarantee every digital service forever

Nintendo’s older Wii U and Nintendo 3DS services illustrate why a physical game and its connected features have different lifecycles. Nintendo Support says purchases in those systems’ eShops ended on March 27, 2023. Redownloads of owned games and DLC and updates remained available “for the foreseeable future,” while online play and other functionality using online communication ended on April 8, 2024. Nintendo’s eShop discontinuation Q&A sets out those service changes.

Those dates concern Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, not the current availability of any specific Switch or Switch 2 title. They show that purchasing a physical copy does not by itself guarantee indefinite access to downloads, updates, online play, or other connected services.
