There is no official confirmation that Grand Theft Auto VI will run on Nintendo Switch 2. Rockstar’s platform FAQ, last updated August 18, 2026, lists PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S—not Switch 2. If GTA 6 is why you’re choosing a console, don’t buy Switch 2 on the assumption that it will play the game. Check Rockstar’s listing again just before you buy.
What Rockstar’s current platform listing says
Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto VI Platforms, Editions, and Versions FAQ lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S for pre-orders. It does not list Nintendo Switch 2. That means Rockstar has not confirmed a Switch 2 version in this FAQ; it does not establish that a port could never be announced later.
The FAQ was last updated August 18, 2026. Platform plans and availability can change, so use the current page—not an old article or rumor—as your final check before purchase.
Why Switch 2 backward compatibility doesn’t answer the question
Nintendo says Switch 2 plays compatible Nintendo Switch games, but warns that some titles may be unsupported or not fully compatible. For third-party games, Nintendo directs players to the publisher for specific compatibility information. Its guidance is about Switch games and does not confirm a Switch 2 version of GTA VI.

- Model Number CFI-2000
- Includes DualSense Wireless Controller, 1TB SSD, 2 Horizontal Stand Feet, HDMI Cable, AC power cord, USB cable, printed materials, ASTRO’s PLAYROOM (Pre-installed game)
- Vertical Stand sold seperately
Nintendo’s support page puts it plainly: “For specific compatibility information about games published by someone other than Nintendo, please contact the game’s publisher.” For GTA VI, that means looking for a Rockstar announcement or a Switch 2 listing from Rockstar—not treating general backward compatibility as proof.
Nintendo describes Switch 2 as having substantially improved CPU and GPU performance compared with Switch. That general hardware information is not a test of GTA VI. The official pages cited here provide no Switch 2 build, frame rate, resolution, or game-specific benchmark for GTA VI, so performance claims based on hardware descriptions would be speculation.

What to verify before you spend money
- Check Rockstar’s current platform page. Open the Platforms, Editions, and Versions FAQ close to purchase. Confirm that Switch 2 has been explicitly added if you want to play GTA VI on it.
- Confirm the platform named on the product listing. Rockstar currently lists PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. A listing for one of those consoles does not make the game playable on Switch 2.
- Check the format and account region. Rockstar says the physical version is a box containing a download code, not a disc, and advises matching the code’s region to the platform account. Confirm the console platform and region before purchasing.
- Separate hardware claims from game-specific confirmation. Rumored performance estimates and descriptions of Switch 2’s general processing improvements are not evidence of a GTA VI port. The official sources cited here publish no Switch 2 performance profile for this game.
- Decide whether you’re willing to wait. If Switch 2 is the console you want and GTA VI is essential, wait for Rockstar to list it before buying on that basis. If you want to play on a currently listed platform, choose accordingly rather than expecting an accessory or compatibility setting to add support.
What is—and isn’t—established about Switch 2
Nintendo lists 256 GB of internal storage for Switch 2, excluding space reserved for system use; additional storage uses microSD Express cards. That is a general console specification, not a GTA VI storage requirement or evidence of a Switch 2 edition. Rockstar has not published a Switch 2 release date, price, build, or performance information in the platform FAQ cited here.
