Not for everyone. A foldable phone can take the place of a tablet for people who mainly want a larger screen for everyday tasks without carrying a second device. But dedicated tablets still offer a larger work surface and support workflows built around a stylus, keyboard, and trackpad. The choice depends on what you do on the bigger screen—not just whether a phone can fold open.

What a foldable phone can replace

A book-style foldable works as a conventional phone when closed and opens into a larger display for reading, browsing, viewing documents, or using multiple apps. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 with an 8.0-inch main display when unfolded and a 6.5-inch cover display. Samsung describes its wider main screen as supporting multitasking; those are manufacturer specifications and claims, not an independent productivity assessment. Specifications and availability may vary by region.

That arrangement can suit someone who wants a single device for calls and lighter tasks on a larger screen. It may also make a separate tablet unnecessary if the tablet is used mainly for occasional reading, web browsing, or checking documents.

How the opened screen compares with a tablet

An 8.0-inch foldable display is smaller by diagonal measurement than the 11-inch iPad (A16) listed by Apple. Diagonal measurements alone do not establish usable work area: aspect ratio, app layout, and the way you hold or position a device also matter. Still, a foldable’s opened screen remains a compromise between a phone you can carry closed and a dedicated tablet with a larger display.

Consider what you need to see at once. A foldable may be sufficient for one or two apps, a document beside a reference, or a quick edit. If your work benefits from more room for text, controls, or side-by-side content, a larger tablet screen may be more comfortable.

Multitasking depends on software as well as screen size

A larger display is useful only if the software lets you arrange your work effectively. Apple describes iPadOS 26 features including resizable windows, window placement, tiling, and Stage Manager. Which capabilities are available depends on the iPad model, so check the specifications for the particular device rather than assuming every iPad supports every multitasking or external-display feature.

Samsung also describes multitasking on the Galaxy Z Fold7. Its support documentation says supported Galaxy foldables can use certain apps on the front and main screens, and that some models support app use while partially folded. These behaviors depend on the model and software; they should not be assumed across all foldables.

When a tablet remains the better fit

A dedicated tablet is more compelling if your routine depends on a larger working area or accessories. Apple’s 11-inch iPad (A16) supports Apple Pencil and the Magic Keyboard Folio, which includes a keyboard and trackpad. That combination can serve writing, annotation, drawing, and keyboard-based work in ways that a phone-sized device may not suit as well.

  • Choose a foldable as your tablet substitute if carrying one device matters most and your larger-screen use is occasional or relatively light.
  • Keep or choose a tablet if you regularly write or draw with a stylus, work with a keyboard and trackpad, or want more screen space for sustained tasks.
  • Consider both if you rely on a phone throughout the day but also need a more comfortable, dedicated screen for longer sessions.

A practical way to decide

  1. List what you do on a tablet. Separate quick reading and browsing from work that involves long documents, detailed annotation, drawing, or several apps at once.
  2. Check the actual screen experience. Compare the devices in person if possible, opening the apps and content you use. Screen diagonals are useful specifications, but they do not show precisely how much content fits or how comfortable a layout feels.
  3. Try your multitasking routine. Verify that the specific model and software support the window arrangement or app behavior you need.
  4. Check accessory compatibility. Confirm that the tablet supports the stylus or keyboard you plan to use, and that those accessories suit your workflow.
  5. Decide whether one device is worth the compromise. A foldable simplifies what you carry; a separate tablet gives you a larger dedicated surface. Your answer depends on which trade-off matters more.

Do foldables make tablets obsolete?

The available product documentation shows overlapping capabilities, not that foldable phones are replacing tablets across the market. There is no market statistic here establishing tablet displacement, nor an independent side-by-side test ranking foldables and tablets for every use. For some people, a foldable can replace a tablet; for others, the larger screen and accessory-based workflows of a dedicated tablet remain valuable.
