A regular cellular call will generally disconnect when you turn on Airplane Mode because the mode disables the phone’s cellular connection. The exact transition is not documented for every phone and carrier, so the call may not end in precisely the same way on every device. A call already using Wi-Fi or an internet app follows a different path.
What happens to an active cellular call?
Airplane Mode turns off cellular service. If your call is using the carrier’s cellular network, removing that connection will generally cause the call to disconnect. Apple says that with Airplane Mode on, iPhone users cannot make phone calls, but its guidance does not specify exactly when or how every active call ends as the setting changes. Apple’s Airplane Mode guidance and iPhone User Guide support the expected loss of cellular calling, not a universal guarantee about the timing.
Can a call continue over Wi-Fi?
Possibly, if the call is a carrier Wi-Fi call or an app-based internet call, Wi-Fi is enabled and connected, and the relevant service supports that call. Wi-Fi is separate from cellular: Apple lets iPhone users turn Wi-Fi back on while Airplane Mode remains on. On Pixel phones, users can change wireless connection settings while Airplane Mode is on, and the phone remembers those settings. Pixel instructions do not establish identical behavior for every Android device. Google’s Pixel instructions describe that platform’s controls.
Carrier Wi-Fi Calling
Wi-Fi Calling requires support from the carrier and phone, and the feature must be set up. Google’s Phone app identifies calls placed over the internet as “Internet Call” or “Wi-Fi calling.” See Google’s Wi-Fi Calling instructions for the carrier and setup requirements. Having Wi-Fi available does not by itself turn a cellular call into a Wi-Fi call.

Calls through internet apps
An app-based call uses its internet connection rather than the ordinary cellular voice connection. If Wi-Fi remains on and has a working internet connection, such a call may continue, but the result depends on the app and connection. Airplane Mode can still interrupt it if the phone has no usable internet connection.
Does Airplane Mode guarantee a live handoff to Wi-Fi?
No general guarantee is established. A supported Wi-Fi call may be possible with Airplane Mode on, but that is different from an active cellular call seamlessly switching to Wi-Fi when you enable the mode. The outcome can depend on the call path, phone, carrier, setup and network conditions.

Google Fi documents its own routing behavior: it may choose Wi-Fi or cellular based on connection quality, and a Wi-Fi call may continue over mobile service if Wi-Fi weakens and cellular service is available. Its Wi-Fi-only instructions begin by connecting to Wi-Fi and then turning on Airplane Mode. Those details apply to Google Fi and should not be assumed for other carriers. Google Fi’s Wi-Fi calling guidance explains its service-specific behavior.

- Call type: A cellular carrier call, carrier Wi-Fi call and app-based internet call rely on different connections.
- Radio settings: Airplane Mode disables cellular, while Wi-Fi may be switched back on separately.
- Network: Wi-Fi must be connected and stable for a Wi-Fi call; cellular availability can also affect a carrier’s routing or handoff.
- Compatibility and setup: The phone and carrier must support Wi-Fi Calling, and the feature must be enabled.
- Handoff support: Whether an existing call can move between connections depends on the particular carrier and device. A documented behavior for one carrier is not evidence of a universal feature.
What about emergency calls?
Apple says emergency calls may be made over Wi-Fi when cellular service is unavailable and Wi-Fi Calling is enabled. Availability and routing can depend on the carrier and the emergency address associated with the service. Do not rely on Wi-Fi Calling as a guaranteed substitute for emergency calling; consult your carrier’s instructions for your location and service. Apple’s Wi-Fi Calling privacy information describes these carrier and emergency-call caveats.

How to check what kind of call you are using
- Identify whether the call is a standard call from the phone’s dialer, a carrier Wi-Fi call, or a call inside an internet app.
- Check whether Wi-Fi is on and connected. On iPhone, Wi-Fi can be turned on separately while Airplane Mode remains on; Pixel users can adjust wireless settings with Airplane Mode enabled.
- If you expect carrier Wi-Fi Calling to work, confirm that both your carrier and phone support it and that it is enabled.
- If an existing cellular call drops when you enable Airplane Mode, treat that as the expected result of losing its cellular connection. Do not assume the phone should transfer it to Wi-Fi.
