Probably not in one step. AI is more likely to change many jobs by automating or assisting with some tasks than to eliminate every exposed occupation. Whether your own role shrinks, grows or changes depends on the tasks you perform, how reliable and affordable the technology is, whether your employer adopts it, how workflows are redesigned and whether demand for the resulting work rises or falls.

An exposure score is therefore not a layoff forecast. It describes potential overlap between AI capabilities and work activities. The most useful way to assess your situation is to examine your recurring tasks, then compare that picture with actual adoption and demand in your industry and country.

What does it mean for AI to “replace” a job?

Jobs are bundles of tasks

A job title hides a mixture of activities. A payroll clerk may enter data, reconcile exceptions, answer employee questions and handle confidential judgments. A software developer may write code, investigate production failures, negotiate requirements and explain trade-offs to nontechnical colleagues. An AI system might assist with one activity, automate another and have little effect on the rest.

That is why occupation-level labels can mislead. The International Labour Organization (ILO) says exposure measures indicate technological susceptibility, not labour-market outcomes. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) likewise warns that its AI-exposure category is not a forecast of employment growth or decline.

Four different outcomes are possible

  • Assistance: AI handles drafts, searches, summaries or routine analysis while a person remains responsible for the result.
  • Task automation: a repeatable activity is completed with little human intervention, allowing the same worker to handle more cases or different work.
  • Job redesign: an employer combines tasks differently, changing the skills, pace or staffing mix of a role.
  • Displacement or growth: some positions may be reduced when savings outweigh the value of human work, while other roles expand because AI lowers costs or creates new demand.

These outcomes can occur in the same occupation or even in the same workplace. A high-exposure task can be automated without making the entire job redundant.

What does current evidence actually show?

Global exposure: the ILO’s 2025 estimate

The ILO estimated in 2025 that one in four workers worldwide was in an occupation with some degree of generative-AI exposure. The figure is an exposure estimate based on task-level scoring, expert input and AI-assisted assessment; it is not a count of jobs lost.

ILO 2025 measure Reported result How to interpret it
Workers worldwide in occupations with some GenAI exposure One in four Potential task overlap, not predicted redundancies
Exposure in high-income countries About one in three jobs Higher modeled exposure in this income group
Exposure in low-income economies About one in ten jobs Lower modeled exposure, influenced by occupational structure and access to technology
Highest-automation-potential occupations in high-income countries Nearly 10% of women’s employment versus 3.5% of men’s employment An aggregate occupational pattern, not an individual prediction

The ILO’s updated mean automation score was 0.29 in 2025, compared with 0.30 in 2023; the standard deviation was 0.14 in 2025 versus 0.30 in 2023. Those are properties of the scoring method, not percentages of jobs that will be automated.

Early employment evidence is mixed

The ILO’s June 2026 review of empirical evidence found that large-scale displacement remained limited in the studies it examined. It described productivity gains as real but uneven and often not yet verified at scale. Workers reported saving a few percent of their working hours in some settings, but those savings had not yet translated broadly into higher measured output, earnings or employment.

This is a time-bounded finding, not proof that no one has lost work because of AI or that future staffing effects will be small. Employers may take time to redesign processes, retrain staff, negotiate data and security requirements or respond to changing demand.

What the latest U.S. BLS data can and cannot tell you

The BLS employment projections covering 2025–35 were released on August 27, 2026. BLS publishes supplemental relative AI-exposure categories alongside those projections. The categories compare occupations with one another; they do not measure a worker’s probability of being laid off, an occupation’s wage effect or the chance that an employer will adopt a particular system.

BLS example Relative exposure category described by BLS Important qualification
Web developers Very high relative exposure Relative placement in the BLS measure, not a certainty about job losses
Customer service representatives Very high relative exposure Some interactions may be automated while escalation, empathy and accountability remain human tasks
Personal financial advisers Very high relative exposure AI capability does not establish adoption, regulatory acceptance or employment decline
Housekeeping cleaners Low relative exposure Physical setting and task requirements limit overlap with current AI systems
Firefighters Low relative exposure Emergency judgment, physical work and unpredictable environments remain central
Dental hygienists Low relative exposure Hands-on care and patient interaction are key parts of the role

BLS cautions that its inputs include theoretical capability sources representing technology available no later than mid-2023. Much of the underlying work models occupations as bundles of tasks or other features and does not fully represent bottlenecks, complementarities or workflow dependencies. Treat the category as one input, not a current and absolute automation probability.

Which kinds of work appear more exposed?

Clerical and administrative work

The ILO continues to identify clerical occupations as among the most exposed. Examples include data-entry clerks, typists, accounting and bookkeeping clerks and administrative secretaries. These jobs often contain substantial text processing, structured data handling, document production and routine communication.

Exposure does not mean every clerical position disappears. A role may shift toward exception handling, records governance, customer contact, quality checks or coordination with other departments. The local result depends on whether an employer uses AI to reduce headcount, increase throughput or redirect staff to higher-value work.

Professional and technical work

The ILO also reports increasing exposure in parts of financial analysis, web and multimedia development, application programming and investment advising. These fields contain tasks that language and code models can assist with, such as drafting, classification, research synthesis, code generation and scenario analysis.

Professional exposure can coexist with strong demand. When AI lowers the cost of producing a service, customers may request more of it, creating work even as the time required per unit falls. Regulation, liability, data access, security and the need to understand a client’s context can also preserve human responsibilities.

Work with lower relative exposure in the BLS examples

Housekeeping cleaners, firefighters and dental hygienists appear in BLS’s low-relative-exposure examples. Their work relies heavily on physical presence, manipulation of objects, unpredictable environments, emergency response or direct patient care. “Low” is still a relative category, not a guarantee that technology will never alter scheduling, documentation, training or other parts of the job.

Why exposure does not determine your employment outcome

Several links must occur before technical capability becomes a staffing change:

  • Reliability: an employer may not accept occasional errors in medical, financial, legal or safety-critical work.
  • Adoption cost: systems require data preparation, integration, security controls, monitoring, training and ongoing maintenance.
  • Workflow fit: automating one step can create a bottleneck elsewhere, so the whole process may need redesign.
  • Accountability: a person or licensed professional may still have to approve decisions, explain them and correct mistakes.
  • Demand response: lower production costs can reduce staffing, increase output, lower prices, expand access or produce a combination of these effects.
  • Institutions and policy: labor agreements, regulation, professional standards and workplace norms influence what can be automated and how quickly.

Because these factors vary, two employers using similar tools can make different staffing decisions. An exposure measure captures potential task overlap, not the complete chain from capability to employment.

  1. List recurring activities. Write down what you do weekly or monthly: producing documents, handling transactions, analyzing information, meeting customers, operating equipment, making decisions and resolving exceptions.
  2. Mark the digital and routine parts. Note tasks that use standardized inputs, repeatable rules and data already stored in electronic systems. These are more accessible to software than work requiring physical presence or unusual context.
  3. Separate assistance from accountability. Identify where someone must verify facts, exercise judgment, protect confidential information, meet a legal duty or explain a decision to another person.
  4. Look for actual adoption. Check whether your employer has approved tools, changed procedures, measured usage or announced staffing and training plans. Rumors about a future system are weaker evidence than a deployed workflow.
  5. Check demand and bottlenecks. Ask whether faster production would create more customer requests, shorter queues or additional services, and whether another step would limit the benefit.
  6. Compare credible local data. U.S. workers can review BLS occupation projections and its relative exposure categories for 2025–35. Use them alongside employer information; neither is an individual forecast.

A useful personal question is not “Can AI do anything in my job?” but “Which tasks could it perform reliably, what would remain, and what decision would my employer make if those tasks became cheaper?”

How to prepare without treating training as a guarantee

Build complementary capability

Learn the AI tools that are actually being adopted in your field rather than collecting generic certificates. Practice writing clear instructions, supplying appropriate context, checking outputs against primary records and documenting corrections. In many workplaces, the valuable skill is supervising an AI-assisted process safely, not merely generating a first draft.

Strengthen work that technology does not easily standardize

Develop domain knowledge, judgment, communication, negotiation, relationship management, problem framing and the ability to work across teams. These skills do not make a role immune to change, but they can help you take responsibility for the tasks that remain when routine production is automated.

Make your contribution visible

Keep a record of outcomes you influence: resolved exceptions, improved quality, protected customers, shortened turnaround times or decisions that required context. When workflows change, evidence of these contributions helps clarify which human tasks still matter.

Stay adaptable, not permanently available

Set boundaries around verification, privacy and the use of confidential data. Ask who owns an AI-generated error, what records must be retained and when a human review is mandatory. Adaptability is a practical preparation strategy, not a promise that any particular course or skill will prevent displacement.

How exposure differs by country and group

Income level and occupational structure

The ILO’s 2025 estimates show about one in three jobs in high-income countries with some exposure, compared with about one in ten in low-income economies. These are broad comparisons shaped by the kinds of occupations present, access to digital infrastructure and the methods used to score tasks. They should not substitute for analysis of a specific country, industry or employer.

Gender differences in high-income countries

Nearly 10% of women’s employment versus 3.5% of men’s employment in high-income countries was in occupations with the highest automation potential in the ILO’s estimate. This describes the concentration of workers in occupational groups; it does not predict which individual women or men will lose work. Unequal exposure can also reflect differences in job design, access to training and who benefits from new demand.

A Poland-specific adoption signal

In an ILO survey of Polish workers conducted in late 2024, 9.4% said their employer had officially introduced generative AI, while 16.7% reported personal generative-AI use during the previous week. These figures describe Poland and that survey period. They are not a global adoption rate and do not show how many jobs were eliminated.

When will AI replace a particular occupation?

The available evidence does not support a reliable universal timetable. The ILO says exposure indicators cannot be read as predictions of displacement, and BLS says its exposure categories are not employment forecasts. Timing depends on model capability, cost, data, regulation, employer decisions, worker bargaining power, workflow redesign and demand.

A better forecast is conditional: if a task is digital, repetitive, easy to verify and expensive to perform manually, adoption pressure may be stronger. If it requires physical action, trusted relationships, responsibility for ambiguous decisions or work in changing environments, transformation may be slower or concentrated in supporting tasks.

Common mistakes when reading AI-and-work claims

  • Turning exposure into probability: an index score is not a percentage chance that your job will vanish.
  • Confusing capability with use: a model that can produce an output does not mean an employer will deploy it.
  • Using a global average personally: country, occupation, employer and task mix can differ substantially.
  • Treating one survey as a trend line: the Polish adoption figures describe one country and period.
  • Assuming current evidence settles the future: the ILO’s 2026 review found limited large-scale displacement in the evidence available then, while productivity and staffing effects may evolve.
  • Believing upskilling guarantees security: learning relevant tools can improve adaptability but cannot guarantee continued employment.
