No—not in its standard configuration. Sony’s US BDP-S1700K is DVD Region 1 and follows standard Blu-ray region coding, so imported discs need to match the player’s region to play. A listing calling an S1700 “region-free” may refer to a seller-modified unit, not a feature Sony confirms for the standard player.
How region coding works on the BDP-S1700
Blu-ray and DVD use separate region systems. Blu-ray discs use letters A, B, or C; DVDs use numbered regions. Sony’s US product page identifies the BDP-S1700K as DVD Region 1, and Sony’s manual says the player plays BD-ROM and DVD-Video discs bearing the matching region code or the region-free mark. That means a claim about Blu-ray compatibility does not establish DVD compatibility, or the other way around. Sony’s BDP-S1700K product information and operating instructions describe the standard unit.
Blu-ray regions
Sony maps Region A broadly to North and South America, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and some Southeast Asian areas; Region B to Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Australia, and New Zealand; and Region C to much of the remaining Asian region. These are broad groupings, so check the region mark on the disc or its case rather than relying only on the country where it was purchased. Some discs are region-free. Sony’s Blu-ray region-code guidance explains the matching-region rule and exceptions.
DVD regions
The US BDP-S1700K is specified as DVD Region 1. DVD region numbers are distinct from Blu-ray’s A/B/C labels; ask about both formats if a seller advertises multi-region playback.

What a “region-free” listing actually tells you
Sony’s standard-unit documentation does not certify a particular retailer’s region-free conversion. Treat the phrase as a seller claim about that exact unit and get the details in writing before ordering.
- Which Blu-ray regions does this unit play?
- Which DVD regions does it play?
- Does it require region switching? If so, how is switching done?
- Will it handle the video standard used by your imported discs and your display?
- What warranty and return coverage applies if a disc does not play?
- Is the listing specifically for the BDP-S1700, and what market version is being sold?
For a used player, check the model and region information on its label and compare those details with the seller’s documentation. Sony’s manual describes finding the unit’s region code and matching it to the disc.

If a disc still will not play
Matching regions are only one requirement. Sony’s manual cautions that playback can also depend on disc type and version. Check the disc format against the manual’s supported formats, then confirm that the disc itself is not damaged and that any seller-provided region-switching steps have been followed. Sony lists support across Blu-ray, DVD-Video, DVD-R/RW and DVD+R/RW variants, and CDs in the S1700 family documentation; compatibility can vary by disc.

Other BDP-S1700 limits to factor in
The S1700 is a Full HD 1080p player with DVD upscaling, not 4K playback. It has HDMI output, a front USB input, and rear Ethernet. Sony says it has no built-in Wi-Fi, so its online streaming connection is wired. These specifications are relevant if you are weighing an S1700 against a newer player, but they do not change region compatibility. See Sony’s BDP-S1700K specifications.
