Yes—usually. A Samsung soundbar can work with a non-Samsung TV when the two exact models share a compatible connection, such as HDMI ARC/eARC, optical audio, or Bluetooth. The brands do not have to match. Check the ports, supported audio formats, and control features in both manuals before connecting.
Will a Samsung soundbar work with a non-Samsung TV?
Compatibility is determined by the connection and the capabilities of the particular TV and soundbar, not by the logo on the front. A mixed-brand setup can provide normal TV audio, but Samsung-only features may not be available when the television is made by another company.
The most capable wired option is usually HDMI ARC or eARC. Optical audio is a dependable fallback when both devices have the required ports. Bluetooth can avoid cables, provided both products support Bluetooth audio. Wi-Fi and proprietary wireless functions are more model-specific and should never be assumed to work across brands.
Check compatibility before you connect anything
Compare the physical ports
Look at the labels on the back or side of both products. For HDMI audio return, the TV must have an HDMI port labeled ARC or eARC, and the soundbar must have a port labeled HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC) or equivalent. A regular HDMI input on the TV is not automatically an audio-return port.

For optical audio, the television needs an optical audio output and the soundbar needs an optical or Digital Audio IN connection. For Bluetooth, both devices must support Bluetooth audio; a Bluetooth remote-control connection alone does not guarantee that the TV can send sound to a speaker.
Check formats and control expectations
Two devices can connect successfully yet differ in the audio formats they accept. Samsung’s format comparison identifies optical as more limited than HDMI eARC and specifically notes that optical does not carry Dolby Digital Plus. For eARC, the TV, cable, soundbar, and selected output format all matter. Read the specifications for the exact model numbers rather than relying on the product family name.
Also decide whether you need the TV remote to adjust soundbar volume and power. HDMI-CEC can allow shared control, but manufacturers give CEC different names and place it in different menus. Samsung calls its implementation Anynet+; another TV brand may use a different label.

Connection options compared
| Connection | What must be present | Advantages | Limits and checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| HDMI ARC/eARC | TV HDMI ARC/eARC port and soundbar HDMI ARC/eARC port | One cable carries TV audio; ARC/eARC can simplify source selection and remote control. | ARC/eARC and HDMI-CEC may need to be enabled. eARC features depend on both devices and the selected format. |
| Optical | TV optical audio output and soundbar optical input | Simple wired digital-audio fallback with broad device availability. | It does not carry Dolby Digital Plus according to Samsung’s format table; confirm the formats supported by both models. |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth audio support in both the TV and soundbar | Wireless connection with no audio cable. | Pairing menus and supported codecs vary. Samsung lists fewer high-bitrate capabilities for Bluetooth than for HDMI eARC. |
| Wi-Fi or proprietary wireless | A specifically supported TV, soundbar, app, and network combination | Can provide convenient wireless playback or app control in supported ecosystems. | Cross-brand operation is not guaranteed. Verify the exact manuals and regional feature list. |
Choose the highest connection level that both products genuinely support. HDMI eARC is preferable when you need the broadest format support and your equipment offers it. HDMI ARC is suitable when both devices support ARC and your chosen formats fit within ARC capability. Optical is useful when HDMI ports are unavailable or unreliable. Bluetooth is convenient for casual listening but can introduce model-dependent codec and synchronization limitations.
How to connect a Samsung soundbar to a non-Samsung TV with HDMI ARC or eARC
- Locate the correct ports. Find the TV’s HDMI connector marked ARC or eARC. On the soundbar, use the HDMI port marked HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC), not an unrelated HDMI input.
- Use a suitable cable. Samsung’s documented ARC/eARC setup recommends a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. Check that your existing cable meets the requirements before buying another one.
- Connect the cable. Plug one end into the television’s ARC/eARC port and the other into the soundbar’s HDMI TO TV ARC/eARC port. Seat both plugs fully.
- Select the soundbar source. Use the soundbar remote or controls to select the HDMI ARC/eARC source. Depending on the model, the display may show HDMI ARC, eARC, or a related label.
- Change the TV output. In the television’s sound settings, choose the connected external audio system, receiver, or HDMI audio-output option instead of the built-in speakers. Menu wording varies by manufacturer.
- Enable ARC/eARC and CEC if required. Turn on the TV’s ARC or eARC setting. Enable HDMI-CEC if you want linked power and volume control. On Samsung televisions this is called Anynet+; on a non-Samsung TV, consult its settings or manual for the equivalent CEC name.
- Set eARC deliberately. If both devices support eARC, confirm that eARC is enabled on the TV and soundbar. A shared-looking HDMI connector does not prove that every eARC format is supported.
- Test several sources. Play a broadcast channel, a built-in TV app, and an external HDMI device if you use one. This helps identify whether the issue is the connection or a particular source’s audio setting.
If the TV offers a choice such as PCM, Auto, Pass-Through, or Bitstream, use the mode recommended by the TV and soundbar manuals for the formats you want. Changing this setting can affect whether multichannel audio is recognized, so do not assume that one label is correct for every model.
How to use optical audio
- Connect the cable from output to input. Plug the TV’s Optical OUT into the soundbar’s Digital Audio IN (Optical). Remove any protective caps from the cable ends if present.
- Select optical output on the TV. Open the sound settings and choose Optical, Digital Audio Out, or the equivalent option instead of TV speakers.
- Select the matching soundbar source. Choose Optical or D.IN on the soundbar, depending on the label used by that model. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance identifies D.IN as the relevant source for optical connections on applicable models.
- Choose a compatible digital format. If there is no sound or a particular program fails, check the TV’s digital-audio-output setting and compare it with the formats listed in both manuals. Optical does not carry Dolby Digital Plus in Samsung’s comparison.
Optical does not provide HDMI-CEC control. You may therefore need to use the soundbar remote for volume or power unless the TV and soundbar offer another compatible control method.

How to pair Bluetooth
- Put the soundbar in pairing mode. Use the soundbar’s Source or Bluetooth button and wait for its pairing indicator or message.
- Open the TV’s speaker list. In the TV’s sound-output or Bluetooth-speaker menu, scan for available devices.
- Select the soundbar. Choose the soundbar’s displayed name and accept the pairing request if the TV presents one.
- Confirm the output. Set the paired soundbar as the active TV audio output and play a program to verify sound.
Pairing screens and codec support differ by model. Samsung’s UK support guidance notes that Bluetooth does not offer the same high-bitrate format capabilities as HDMI eARC. If you notice delay between speech and video, check whether either device offers an audio-delay adjustment or use a wired connection instead.

Basic audio playback is different from ecosystem features. Samsung UK Support’s guide, updated 11 August 2026, states: “If you’re connecting using both a Samsung TV and Samsung soundbar you will be able to use BT / TVSoundConnect / Soundshare.” That statement associates those named functions with matched Samsung devices. It does not establish that every Samsung soundbar has every feature, or that those functions will operate with a non-Samsung TV.
With a mixed-brand setup, plan around the shared connection rather than features described as requiring a Samsung television. Some cross-brand HDMI-CEC functions may still work, but their behavior depends on both manufacturers’ implementations. Verify power control, volume control, automatic source switching, and app functions separately.

Troubleshooting: no sound or unreliable playback
When HDMI ARC/eARC produces no audio
- Confirm that the TV port is labeled ARC or eARC. Move the cable if it is connected to an ordinary HDMI port.
- Confirm that the soundbar end is connected to HDMI TO TV (eARC/ARC), not a standard HDMI input.
- Set the soundbar to the HDMI ARC/eARC source.
- Set the TV’s sound output to the external receiver or soundbar.
- Enable the TV’s ARC/eARC option and HDMI-CEC. Look for the TV manufacturer’s CEC name if it is not called Anynet+.
- Unplug and reseat both ends of the HDMI cable, then restart the TV and soundbar.
- Try a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or Premium High Speed HDMI cable that meets Samsung’s documented recommendation.
When optical produces no audio
- Verify that the cable runs from the TV’s Optical OUT to the soundbar’s Optical or Digital Audio IN.
- Select Optical or D.IN on the soundbar.
- Set the TV’s output to Optical or Digital Audio Out instead of internal speakers.
- Check for a red optical light at the cable end only as a basic connection indication; it does not prove that the selected format is compatible.
- Change the TV’s digital-audio format to one listed as supported by both manuals.
When Bluetooth will not pair or keeps disconnecting
- Make sure the soundbar is in Bluetooth pairing mode rather than connected to another device.
- Remove an old soundbar entry from the TV’s Bluetooth list and scan again.
- Keep the devices within the range specified in their manuals and reduce nearby wireless interference.
- Check that the TV supports Bluetooth audio output, not merely Bluetooth accessories such as keyboards or remotes.
- If synchronization remains poor, switch to HDMI ARC/eARC or optical when both are available.
When only some programs fail
A connection can work for menus or stereo content while failing with a particular surround format. Compare the program’s audio setting with the formats supported by the TV, soundbar, and chosen connection. Optical has fewer format capabilities than HDMI eARC, and eARC still requires compatible support at both ends. Consult both model manuals and the regional support pages before concluding that the hardware is incompatible.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A practical decision path
- Start with HDMI eARC if both products have eARC ports and you want the widest documented format capability.
- Use HDMI ARC when both products support ARC but eARC is unavailable or unnecessary.
- Choose optical when the TV and soundbar share optical ports or when HDMI ARC setup is unreliable.
- Use Bluetooth when both devices support Bluetooth audio and cable-free convenience matters more than maximum format bandwidth or guaranteed synchronization.
- Check proprietary wireless features last. Treat them as optional, model-specific functions rather than a baseline requirement for sound.
This order also gives you a useful diagnostic method: if HDMI fails, test optical or Bluetooth only when both exact models support the alternate route. A successful fallback confirms that the soundbar can play TV audio, while narrowing the problem to the original port, cable, setting, or format.
What you need to buy—or not buy
You may not need new hardware if the correct cable is already available and meets the devices’ requirements. For ARC/eARC, check whether your cable is a High Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet or a Premium High Speed HDMI cable. For an optical fallback, buy a digital optical (Toslink) cable only when both products have optical connections. Do not purchase a cable merely because it carries the same connector shape as the port you need; the port label and supported function are decisive.

If basic checks do not resolve the problem, an AV installation service or home-theater retailer may help identify a port, format, or control mismatch. Have the exact TV and soundbar model numbers available, because regional options and menus can differ.
Bottom line
A Samsung soundbar can work with a non-Samsung TV. Connect shared ARC/eARC ports when available, use optical as a wired fallback, or pair Bluetooth when both devices support TV audio over Bluetooth. Expect normal sound only where the exact models and format settings agree, and do not assume Samsung-specific functions such as TVSoundConnect or Soundshare will carry over to a mixed-brand system. The manuals for the two exact models remain the final compatibility reference.
