Not as a smart doorbell. Ring says its products need home Wi-Fi for setup and use. If the device goes offline, you cannot use live video, receive Ring alerts, or record events. A wired power connection or charged battery keeps the doorbell powered, but does not replace Wi-Fi. Whether an existing indoor chime still sounds during an outage depends on the specific model and installation.
What stops working when Wi-Fi is unavailable?
Ring’s general product information says Ring products require an existing home Wi-Fi network, a mobile device, and the Ring app for setup and use. Ring’s offline-device guidance is explicit: “If your Ring device falls offline, you will not be able to view live video, get alerts, or record events around your home.”
This applies whether the interruption is a router or internet outage or the doorbell has lost its connection. Battery power, hardwiring, or a plug-in adapter can supply electricity; none makes the doorbell’s connected features work offline.

There is no universal yes-or-no answer for an existing mechanical or digital indoor chime. Ring’s guidance makes in-home chime support dependent on the model and configuration, and it does not guarantee that every compatible installation will sound during a Wi-Fi outage. Check your exact doorbell’s compatibility and wiring instructions, then test the installation rather than assuming the chime will work offline.
#1 Best Overall

Ring’s in-home chime guide says some doorbells can be configured with an existing chime, while others do not support an in-home chime kit. The compatibility list identifies model-specific differences; for example, Video Doorbell Wired and Peephole Cam are among the models listed as incompatible with in-home chime kits. Find the product name in the Ring app and consult the guidance for that model before changing wiring or buying a chime.
Does Ring Chime work without Wi-Fi?
Ring Chime and Chime Pro are indoor alert accessories for connected Ring devices, not offline backups. Ring lists them as options for receiving indoor alerts, but they depend on a functioning connection to the Ring device. Chime Pro can help where the Wi-Fi signal is weak; it does not restore service during a home internet outage.

A connected Amazon Alexa Echo may also provide alerts, according to Ring’s chime guidance, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed outage alert. Connected alerts require the services and network connection on which they depend.
Power and connection are separate issues
Ring doorbells vary in how they receive power: some use a battery, some can be hardwired, and some installations use a plug-in adapter. Ring says battery-powered models can be wired to certain internal chimes, and hardwiring a battery-powered model provides trickle charging. Those facts concern power and installation; they do not establish that a particular local chime will ring offline.

Ring’s hardwiring instructions cover connecting to an in-home chime, wiring directly to a transformer or bypassing the in-home chime, and using a plug-in adapter. The appropriate setup depends on the model and compatible hardware.
Do not change transformer wiring or chime connections based on a general guide alone. Ring warns that incorrect power ratings can damage a device or prevent proper chime operation. Its hardwired-doorbell power guidance and your model’s instructions should be checked first. Turn off power at the breaker before electrical work, and follow local electrical requirements; consult a qualified electrician if you are unsure.

What to do if the doorbell keeps going offline
If the issue is a weak or unstable Wi-Fi connection rather than a complete service outage, Ring recommends these checks in its offline-device troubleshooting guidance:
- Check the doorbell’s power and battery status.
- Use Device Health in the Ring app to reconnect it or change its network.
- Move the doorbell closer to the router if practical.
- Consider Chime Pro to improve signal coverage where the connection is weak.
These steps may help with signal or recurring disconnections. A range extender, mesh system, or Chime Pro cannot fix a loss of internet service from the provider.
How to check your own setup
- Identify the exact model. Find the product name in the Ring app; chime compatibility is model-specific.
- Check its chime support. Use Ring’s configuration guide and compatibility list to determine whether it supports your in-home chime.
- Confirm the installation. Compare the wiring and power arrangement with the model’s instructions, including whether the chime is connected, bypassed, or replaced by an adapter.
- Test an outage scenario safely. Once the setup is confirmed, temporarily disconnect Wi-Fi without disturbing electrical wiring and see whether the local chime sounds. Restore the connection and check that the doorbell reconnects.
During an outage, do not count on app notifications, live view, or event recordings. If you need a dependable door alert without internet, choose a separate alert method designed to work locally rather than relying on Ring’s connected features.
