Usually, yes—but the monitor’s 144Hz rating is only its maximum capability. Your laptop, console, or older PC must be able to output 2560×1440 (QHD) at the refresh rate you want, and every part of the signal path—source port, monitor input, cable, dock, hub, or adapter—must support that mode.
A QHD 144Hz monitor will still work when a device can provide only 60Hz, 120Hz, or a lower resolution. It will simply operate at the highest mode the complete connection supports.
What determines whether it will work?
Compatibility is decided by four components working together:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

- Source device: The laptop GPU, console, or PC graphics hardware must generate 2560×1440 at the required refresh rate.
- Source output: The specific HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C video output must carry that signal. A USB-C connector does not automatically provide video or guarantee a particular refresh rate.
- Monitor input: The exact monitor model may support different QHD refresh rates on HDMI and DisplayPort.
- Connection hardware: The cable, dock, hub, or adapter must support the same resolution and refresh-rate mode.
If any one part has a lower limit, that limit becomes the result. A 144Hz monitor cannot make an unsupported laptop output 144Hz, and an adapter cannot create a higher-resolution or higher-refresh signal that the source does not produce.

QHD and 144Hz in plain terms
QHD normally means 2560×1440 pixels. Refresh rate describes how many times per second the monitor can update its image. A 144Hz display can refresh up to 144 times per second, but the connected device and game must supply frames quickly enough to use that capability.
These are separate limits. A computer might output QHD at 144Hz in a desktop, but a demanding game could render below 144 frames per second. Conversely, an older system might display QHD correctly while being limited to 60Hz by its graphics hardware or output port.
Will a laptop work with a QHD 144Hz monitor?
Yes, provided the laptop’s graphics hardware and the exact video-output port support 2560×1440 at the desired refresh rate. Check the laptop manufacturer’s specification for the actual port, not just the model family.
Check the laptop’s video output
- HDMI: Verify the laptop’s HDMI specification and the QHD refresh rates it supports. Two laptops with visually identical HDMI sockets can have different capabilities.
- DisplayPort: A native DisplayPort connection may support a different maximum mode from HDMI on the same machine.
- USB-C: Confirm that the port carries DisplayPort video through its supported alternate mode. USB-C alone identifies the connector shape, not its video capability.
- Dock or adapter: Include the dock’s, hub’s, or adapter’s maximum resolution and refresh rate. The laptop may support the mode directly while the dock does not.
ViewSonic’s support guidance stresses that the source output, monitor input, and cable must all meet the required specification for 144Hz. That principle also applies when a dock or adapter is inserted between the laptop and monitor.
What to expect from laptop graphics
Integrated graphics can often drive an external QHD desktop, but the available refresh rate depends on the chip, driver, port implementation, and workload. A discrete GPU does not guarantee 144Hz either; the port still has to support the mode.

If the laptop offers QHD only at 60Hz, the monitor remains usable. You can run the external display at 2560×1440 and 60Hz, or select a lower resolution if you prefer a higher frame rate in games. If the laptop cannot offer QHD at all through the chosen port, changing the cable will not add that capability.
Will a console work with a QHD 144Hz monitor?
Modern consoles can work with a QHD monitor, but they use their own supported output modes rather than automatically adopting the monitor’s full 144Hz maximum. For console use, HDMI support on the monitor is usually the decisive specification.

Sony states that PS5 1440p output requires a TV or PC monitor supporting 1440p/60Hz, or 1440p/60Hz and 120Hz. A QHD 144Hz monitor can therefore be useful with a PS5 when its HDMI input accepts the appropriate 1440p mode.
The PS5 does not output 144Hz. If the monitor and connection support the console’s 1440p/120Hz mode, the PS5 can use up to 120Hz; otherwise it may run at 60Hz or another supported mode. The extra 24Hz in the monitor’s 144Hz rating is simply unused by the console.
Test PS5 compatibility before changing other settings
- Connect the PS5 directly to the monitor’s HDMI input where practical.
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Select Test 1440p Output.
- Read the result and choose a supported 60Hz or 120Hz mode.
Sony also qualifies variable-refresh-rate operation: PS5 VRR requires a compatible HDMI display and a supported configuration. Check the monitor’s HDMI VRR specification rather than assuming that a 144Hz rating includes VRR over every input.

Other consoles
For any console, identify the console’s supported resolution and refresh-rate modes first, then compare them with the monitor’s HDMI specifications. A display can be advertised as 144Hz while accepting only a lower refresh rate at QHD through HDMI. If a console supports 120Hz at 1440p and the monitor accepts that mode, it can take advantage of 120Hz even though 144Hz is unavailable.
Will an older PC work?
Often, yes, but the result may be QHD at 60Hz rather than QHD at 144Hz. Older PCs can provide basic display output while falling short of the monitor’s maximum mode.
Inspect the graphics hardware and port
- Identify the exact graphics card or integrated-graphics processor.
- Check its supported resolutions and refresh rates for the specific HDMI or DisplayPort output.
- Install a current compatible display driver where available.
- Confirm that the monitor’s input supports the same QHD mode.
Do not infer performance from the monitor specification. An official example from MSI lists 2560×1440 up to 240Hz on both HDMI and DisplayPort for one model, but that describes the monitor, not the capabilities of a connected PC. Another older computer might expose only 60Hz at QHD.
Display output versus gaming performance
There are two separate questions: can the PC establish a QHD signal, and can it render games at a high frame rate? An older PC may pass the first test but produce fewer than 144 frames per second in modern games. In that case, the monitor can still improve desktop space and image sharpness, while gaming refresh rate depends on the title and graphics settings.
Use this compatibility checklist
- Write down the source port. Record whether you will use HDMI, DisplayPort, or USB-C video, and whether a dock or adapter is involved.
- Check the source specification. Find the exact QHD refresh-rate modes supported by that port on your laptop, PC, or console.
- Check the monitor manual. Look at the specification table for the exact model. Note QHD limits separately for HDMI and DisplayPort.
- Verify the cable. Use a cable rated for the required resolution and refresh rate. ViewSonic notes that the correct DisplayPort or HDMI version must match the resolution when targeting 144Hz.
- Remove intermediate devices for testing. Connect directly to the monitor first. Reintroduce a dock, hub, or adapter only after direct operation is confirmed.
- Select the mode in software. Choose 2560×1440 and the desired refresh rate in the operating system or console settings.
- Test the actual signal. Confirm the monitor’s information screen and the device’s display settings report the intended resolution and frequency.

- Open Settings > System > Display.
- Select the external monitor if more than one display is connected.
- Open Advanced display to view the current resolution and refresh rate.
- Use the refresh-rate control to choose an available value, then select the QHD resolution in the display-resolution control if it is not already selected.
If 144Hz is not listed, Windows is reporting the limit of the current signal path or driver. Check the cable, dock, input selection, and graphics settings before assuming the monitor is defective.
Which input should you use?
| Use case | Input to investigate first | Important check | Possible outcome |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gaming laptop | Native DisplayPort, HDMI, or USB-C video output | Exact port capability and any dock limit | QHD at 144Hz, a lower refresh rate, or a lower resolution |
| PS5 or another console | HDMI | 1440p/60Hz or 1440p/120Hz support and HDMI VRR if required | Usually 60Hz or 120Hz; not 144Hz from the console |
| Older desktop PC | The graphics card’s supported digital output | GPU generation, driver, cable, and monitor input | QHD may work while 144Hz is unavailable |
| Laptop through a dock | Dock’s video output | Dock bandwidth and supported QHD refresh rate | The dock can become the limiting component |
The monitor’s input label is not enough by itself. Read the model-specific manual because HDMI and DisplayPort can have different limits, even on the same display.

The monitor shows QHD but only 60Hz
- Check whether the source port supports a higher QHD refresh rate.
- Try the monitor’s other input if the source provides it.
- Replace an unverified cable with one rated for the required HDMI or DisplayPort mode.
- Bypass the dock, hub, or adapter and test a direct connection.
- Update or reinstall the graphics driver if the mode should be available but is missing.
144Hz is missing entirely
Confirm that the monitor is connected to the intended input and that Windows is not using a generic or inactive display profile. Check Advanced display after selecting the correct monitor. If the source or cable cannot carry 144Hz at QHD, the setting will not appear.
The screen is blank or reports no signal
Start with a direct connection, select the correct monitor input, and return the source to a known supported resolution. Then test higher refresh rates incrementally. A dock or adapter that works at a basic mode may fail when bandwidth requirements increase.

VRR does not work
VRR support must exist on the source, the monitor input, and the connection configuration. On PS5, use the console’s supported VRR setup and verify that the monitor supports VRR over HDMI. A high refresh-rate number alone does not establish VRR compatibility.

How to compare two QHD high-refresh monitors
When two displays have similar panel specifications, compare the connection details that affect your equipment:
- QHD refresh-rate support on the input you will actually use.
- Explicit 1440p/120Hz support over HDMI for console gaming.
- VRR support over that same HDMI or DisplayPort input.
- Whether a laptop dock or USB-C adapter is required and what mode it supports.
- The monitor’s exact resolution listing rather than relying only on the term “QHD.”
For example, a monitor specification claiming 2560×1440 up to 240Hz over HDMI and DisplayPort demonstrates broad input capability, but it does not prove that a particular laptop, console, cable, or dock can use those modes.
What you should expect in real setups
Newer gaming laptop, direct connection
If the laptop’s GPU and port both support 2560×1440 at 144Hz and the cable is suitable, select QHD and 144Hz in Windows. Actual game frame rates will vary by title and settings.

Run Sony’s 1440p output test. A compatible monitor can provide 1440p at 60Hz or 120Hz according to the supported configuration; the PS5 will not use 144Hz.
Older office PC
Expect the monitor to function as a normal external display, but verify whether the graphics output offers QHD and whether 144Hz is listed. QHD at 60Hz is a valid and useful result.
Laptop with an inexpensive dock
The dock may reduce the available resolution or refresh rate even when the laptop itself supports more. Test the laptop directly, then compare the dock’s stated limits with the desired mode.
Bottom line
A QHD 144Hz monitor is broadly compatible, but its advertised maximum is not a promise about every connected device. Verify the source’s output, the monitor’s input-specific specification, and the cable or dock as one complete signal path. Laptops and older PCs may run QHD at 60Hz or 144Hz depending on their hardware; a PS5 can use supported 1440p 60Hz or 120Hz modes, but not 144Hz. If the complete path supports only a lower mode, the monitor will normally fall back to that mode rather than become unusable.
