Sometimes, but you cannot safely assume it. China-market OnePlus Ace phones run China-market ColorOS, and the Ace name covers several generations with different Android versions, firmware builds, bands and licensing status. Android compatibility alone does not prove that Google Mobile Services (GMS), Google Play or Android Auto is included.
Before buying, identify the exact model and software build, ask the seller to demonstrate Google Play services and the Play Store on that unmodified phone, and test Android Auto with the car and connection method you will actually use. Treat cellular-band support and any seller-installed or converted firmware as separate checks.
Why the answer varies across OnePlus Ace models
“OnePlus Ace” is a family name, not one globally uniform handset. China-market versions use ColorOS releases intended for China, while hardware, Android base, modem bands and software configuration change by generation. A seller who says an Ace is “Android” or “Google compatible” may be describing only the operating-system foundation, not licensed Google services.
| China-market model documented by OnePlus | Official software description | Other relevant specification |
|---|---|---|
| Original OnePlus Ace | Android 12 with ColorOS 12.1 | Supported cellular bands are model-specific and must be matched to your carrier. |
| OnePlus Ace 3 | ColorOS 14 based on Android 14 | Dual Nano-SIM and USB-C. |
| OnePlus Ace 5 | ColorOS 15 based on Android | USB-C; OnePlus qualifies actual network and band use by local operator deployment. |
These specifications establish that the phones are Android-based, but they do not establish that every regional build contains GMS or that Android Auto is enabled. Always obtain the complete model number, installed ColorOS version and build number for the exact unit.

Does a China ROM OnePlus Ace have Google Play?
It may, but the Android version number cannot answer that question. Google’s compatibility process separates Android compatibility from licensing Google Mobile Services. In Google’s wording, after a device achieves Android compatibility, its maker “can consider Licensing Google Mobile Services.” That means a device can run a compatible Android/ColorOS system without shipping with Google’s proprietary apps and services.
Google Play Store and Google Play services are different
The Play Store is the app marketplace. Google Play services is a separate system component that supplies APIs and background services used by many Google and third-party apps. Google identifies Android Auto among the device connections supported through Google Play services. Installing a Play Store application, therefore, is not proof that the underlying Play services package is present, certified, enabled and functioning.
What to ask a seller to prove
Request a continuous video or live demonstration using the exact model and ROM you will receive, rather than a screenshot from another Ace generation. The demonstration should show:

- A Google account being added without an error caused by missing or disabled services.
A seller’s statement that the phone is “global,” or that Google apps can be downloaded, is not equivalent to this evidence. A sideloaded store can appear to work while Play services, certification or background permissions remain incomplete.
Can I use Android Auto on a China-market OnePlus Ace?
Android Auto requires more than an Android logo or a working Play Store. Google’s setup requirements differ for wired and wireless projection, and the phone, vehicle, cable, network and country all matter.
| Connection | Google’s stated phone-side requirements | Additional conditions |
|---|---|---|
| Wired | Android 9 or newer and an active data plan. | A compatible car and a high-quality USB cable; the cable must carry data, not only power. |
| Wireless | A compatible Android phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi and an active data plan. Google says Android 11 phones support wireless projection. | A compatible car, compatible wireless implementation and a country where Android Auto is available. |
Google also notes that most Android Auto features are unavailable outside its listed supported countries and regions. A phone can therefore pass an app check yet fail to project in a location, vehicle or network environment that Google does not support.

Why Google services still need separate verification
Android Auto relies on Google Play services and related components. If the China ROM lacks them, they are disabled, or the build is not functioning correctly, Android Auto may not appear, may stop during setup or may connect without all features. A successful Play Store installation alone does not establish Android Auto compatibility.
How to check an Ace before you buy
- Get the exact identity. Ask for the model number, storage/RAM variant, ColorOS version, Android version and full build number shown in Settings. Do not rely on “Ace 3” or “Ace 5” alone if the listing does not identify the regional SKU.
- Confirm Google components on that build. Have the seller open the Play Store, sign in, install or update an app, and show Google Play services enabled in system settings.
- Determine your Android Auto method. Decide whether your vehicle will use USB or wireless projection. For wireless use, verify that both the phone’s Android version/Wi-Fi capability and the car support the required mode.
- Test the actual vehicle if possible. Pair the exact handset with the car before the return period ends. A generic claim that Android Auto works on the model is weaker than a successful connection to your dashboard.
- Check country availability. Confirm Android Auto is available where you will drive; feature availability can differ by country or region.
- Match cellular bands and services. Compare the model’s official band list with the bands and activation requirements of your carrier. Ask the carrier whether imported equipment can receive the local services you need.
- Clarify firmware history. Ask whether the phone is running its original China build, an official update, or a seller-converted ROM. Record the answer in writing for warranty and return purposes.
Setting up Google apps and wired Android Auto
Initial Google-app check
- Connect the phone to a reliable data connection and finish the system setup.
- Open the Play Store and sign in with your Google account.
- In Settings, verify that Google Play services is installed, enabled and allowed to run in the background.
- Update Google Play services, the Play Store and Android Auto if updates are offered.
- Restart the phone, then open Android Auto and review its permissions and notification settings.
Menu names can vary by ColorOS release. The important result is not simply that an icon exists, but that the services remain enabled after a reboot and can complete account, app and background operations.
Wired connection
- Put the car in park and turn on its infotainment system.
- Use the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port, not a power-only socket.
- Connect with a short, high-quality USB-C data cable. A charging-only cable cannot transfer the data Android Auto requires.
- Unlock the phone and accept the Android Auto, USB and permission prompts.
- Allow the car display to finish setup, then make a test call or navigation request while parked.
Google specifies a high-quality cable but does not certify a particular cable brand. Replacing a suspect cable can solve a data-link problem; it cannot add Google services to unsupported firmware.

- Enable Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and mobile data, then pair the phone with the car using the vehicle’s instructions.
- Accept Android Auto permissions and wait for wireless projection to start.
- If pairing succeeds but projection does not, update Google Play services and Android Auto, reboot both devices and repeat the pairing process.
Troubleshooting when Google apps or Android Auto fail
| Symptom | Likely checkpoint | Action |
|---|---|---|
| No Play Store or Google account sign-in | GMS may not be licensed, installed or enabled on the build. | Ask the seller or manufacturer for confirmation for that exact SKU; do not assume a manual APK install provides a complete solution. |
| Play Store opens, but Android Auto is missing or crashes | Google Play services may be absent, outdated, restricted in the background or malfunctioning. | Check that Play services and Android Auto are enabled and updated, remove battery restrictions, reboot and retest. |
| Wired connection only charges | Wrong USB port or charging-only/damaged cable. | Use the car’s data-capable port and a known-good high-quality USB-C data cable. |
| Wireless pairing fails | Car support, 5 GHz capability, Bluetooth/Wi-Fi state or country availability. | Verify the vehicle and country requirements, enable Bluetooth/Wi-Fi/mobile data, clear the old pairing and pair again. |
| Android Auto works intermittently | Background restrictions, unstable data service, cable quality or an uncertified/modified ROM. | Remove battery restrictions, test with another data cable and check whether the same build is supported without seller modifications. |
If a phone passes the Play Store test but fails with your vehicle, treat the outcomes separately. Google services being present does not guarantee that every Android Auto feature, projection mode or car implementation will work.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Carrier compatibility is a separate purchase decision
Google-app support does not tell you whether an imported Ace will work well on your mobile network. OnePlus lists supported bands for its China-market models, and those lists differ by generation. The Ace 5 specification also warns that actual network and band use depends on local operator deployment.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCompare every relevant LTE and 5G band, not just the phone’s headline “5G” label. Confirm with the carrier whether the model can be activated and whether local services such as VoLTE or other required network features are supported. A phone can run Google apps and Android Auto while still offering poor coverage or no activation on your network.

Should you install another region’s firmware?
Do not treat a cross-region flash as an official compatibility fix. The available documentation does not establish a supported cross-flash method for a particular Ace model, nor does it establish the effect on warranty, updates, payments or security-sensitive applications. A converted ROM may change language, Google-service behavior, bootloader state or update delivery, but those outcomes are build-specific.
Ask the seller exactly what was changed and whether the bootloader was unlocked. Keep the return option until you have tested Google sign-in, Play services, Android Auto with your car, calls and mobile data. If a seller refuses to identify the firmware, consider that an unresolved risk rather than evidence of compatibility.
A practical decision rule
| Result of your checks | What it means |
|---|---|
| Exact model/build identified; Play Store and Play services demonstrated; Android Auto tested with your car; bands match your carrier | Reasonable basis to buy, subject to the seller’s warranty and return terms. |
| Google apps work, but Android Auto or vehicle support has not been tested | Possible, but keep a return path and test immediately; app availability alone is not proof of projection. |
| Seller promises Google installation but will not demonstrate Play services or disclose the build | Compatibility is unverified. Assume risk rather than relying on the listing. |
| Band support or local Android Auto availability is missing | The phone may be unsuitable even if Google apps install successfully. |
The dependable answer to “Will a China-market OnePlus Ace phone work with Google apps and Android Auto?” is therefore conditional: some exact Ace handsets and builds can, while others may lack licensed services or fail vehicle, country or network requirements. Verify the handset, software, Google components, car connection and carrier bands as separate items before relying on it.
