No—not in stereoscopic 3D if the TV is a standard model without 3D display support. A 3D Blu-ray player and glasses cannot add that capability to the television. Sony Support says 3D cannot be added to an existing non-3D TV: Sony’s 3D glasses and TV guidance.
You may be able to watch a particular disc in 2D, but that depends on the disc and player. Check both manuals or the disc packaging rather than assuming 2D playback will work.
What equipment is needed to watch Blu-ray in 3D?
Every part of the signal chain must support 3D. A missing capability in any one component can prevent stereoscopic playback.

- 3D-capable TV: Confirm support in the exact model’s specifications or manual. Glasses and a player cannot upgrade a non-3D television.
- 3D-capable Blu-ray player: The player must explicitly support 3D Blu-ray playback. Some models may need a firmware update to enable it.
- 3D disc: The movie must be a supported 3D Blu-ray title; check its packaging or documentation.
- High-Speed HDMI cable: Sony’s setup guidance calls for a High-Speed HDMI connection between the 3D source and TV.
- TV-compatible glasses: Use the type and model specified for the television. Active-shutter glasses are powered and synchronize with the display; passive glasses use polarized lenses and require a compatible screen.
These requirements work together: buying a 3D player supplies a compatible source, but it does not make a non-3D TV capable of displaying 3D.

How do you set up a 3D Blu-ray system?
- Connect the 3D Blu-ray player directly to the 3D-capable TV with a High-Speed HDMI cable.
- Insert a supported 3D Blu-ray title and select the HDMI input connected to the player.
- Follow the TV’s instructions to detect or select 3D mode. If the picture appears as two similar images or split into two views, check the TV’s 3D format setting. Sony’s setup guidance identifies Side-by-Side and Over-Under as possible formats.
- Put on the glasses compatible with the TV. For active glasses, follow the TV manual’s instructions for pairing or synchronization.
Why might a 3D Blu-ray not display in 3D?
If the TV does not offer a 3D option, verify the exact TV model supports 3D and that a 3D signal is reaching it. Then check the other links in the setup:
- Confirm the player supports 3D Blu-ray and check whether it needs a firmware update.
- Verify the disc is a supported 3D title.
- Check the HDMI connection and TV input.
- Consult the TV manual for the correct 3D format setting and compatible glasses.
- Make sure active glasses are powered and synchronized, if that is the TV’s system.
Incompatible or unsynchronized glasses can stop you from seeing 3D even when the TV supports it. If the TV itself has no 3D support, troubleshooting the player or glasses will not change that limitation.

Can you watch the disc in 2D instead?
Possibly, but it is not guaranteed for every disc and player. Check the specific player manual and disc packaging for 2D playback support before relying on that option. This is separate from 3D compatibility: a non-3D TV cannot display stereoscopic 3D, even if the player can read the disc.
