Tasmanian wildlife veterinarians and biologists have begun a government-permitted pilot to hand-capture and vaccinate up to 100 nesting shy albatrosses on remote Albatross Island. Each selected bird is due to receive two H5 avian-influenza vaccine doses, with the work designed to test whether individual protection is practical for this threatened species.
The birds showed no reported H5 disease signs in their breeding colonies when the program began. The operation is also a feasibility study: officials will track the vaccinated birds and use the results to judge whether any larger conservation strategy could be justified.

The target is an upper limit, not a promise that exactly 100 birds will be treated. Conditions on the island and the ability to find the same nests again determine the final number.

Shy albatrosses breed nowhere except three isolated Tasmanian islands: Albatross Island, Mewstone and Pedra Branca. Their restricted breeding range makes a disease outbreak potentially consequential for the species as a whole, and Tasmanian and national assessments classify them as highly vulnerable to H5 bird flu.

Albatross Island is the only one of those three colonies that people can access. That unusual access allows a team to approach nesting birds, identify individuals and return weeks later for a second dose. The same sequence is generally impractical for wild birds that nest on inaccessible islands or cannot be safely caught twice.
How a wild albatross is vaccinated
1. Trained staff capture the nesting bird
Departmental personnel experienced in handling albatrosses capture birds by hand at the nest. The method avoids nets or remote baiting, but every capture still creates stress and must be kept as brief as possible.
2. A veterinarian checks and weighs it
A staff member holds the bird while the team assesses its condition and records its weight. An experienced wildlife veterinarian oversees the injection and can stop the procedure if an individual’s condition, the weather or another factor makes handling unsafe.

3. The nest and bird are marked for the return visit
Temporary non-toxic paint and numbered nest markers identify study birds. These marks let crews determine which birds have already received a first dose and which require the second dose, without relying on memory or repeatedly handling unmarked birds.
4. The bird is returned and observed
After vaccination, the albatross goes back to its nest. Remote cameras and follow-up visits are intended to record behavior, nest attendance and other signs of how birds respond, while also helping staff locate individuals for the second injection.
Why the work is tightly controlled
Wildlife vaccination is not a routine activity that members of the public can undertake. Tasmania’s standing guidance says vaccinating most wild bird species is impractical and that permit conditions restrict which species may be treated. This project therefore operates under an Animal Ethics Committee assessment, species-specific permits, trained handlers and veterinary oversight.

Biosecurity procedures are essential because people, clothing, equipment and boats can carry pathogens between colonies. The team must also balance disease prevention against disturbance during breeding. Weather, access and the birds’ welfare can reduce the number treated or halt work, which is why the official target is expressed as “up to” 100.

Have the albatrosses caught H5 bird flu?
No H5 disease signs had been reported in the breeding colonies when the vaccination program began. That statement describes the status at the start of the pilot; it is not proof that every bird was uninfected or that the colonies will remain free of the virus.
Tasmania’s update issued on 7 October 2026, using data current to 8 October, recorded 46 H5 bird-flu events. At that snapshot, officials reported no mass mortalities and no detection in Tasmanian poultry. Event totals are time-sensitive and can change as surveillance produces new results.

The Australian environment department describes H5 avian influenza as a significant risk to wildlife and ecosystems, particularly threatened species. BirdLife Australia notes that H5N1 affects birds and some mammals associated with water, including seabirds such as albatrosses.

Tasmanian Environment Minister Guy Barnett described the project as “the first known attempt anywhere in the world to vaccinate albatrosses against H5 bird flu.” That is an official characterization of this pilot. Its importance lies not only in the injection itself but in testing whether a free-ranging albatross can be caught, dosed twice and monitored without unacceptable breeding disruption.
The Australian Government says it has invested almost $2 million since 2024 to prepare for vaccination options for vulnerable native birds. That preparation supports this kind of tightly bounded field trial; it does not establish that a vaccine will protect an entire species or that mass vaccination is ready.

What the monitoring can—and cannot—show
Department seabird biologists will compare camera observations and return-visit findings with handling records. The practical questions include:
- Can the same nesting birds be found and safely handled for the second dose?
- Do birds resume normal nesting behavior after capture and vaccination?
- Can staff maintain reliable individual records under remote-island conditions?
- Is the workload, disturbance and biosecurity burden compatible with a larger operation?
Even a successful pilot would cover only the treated birds. It would not automatically immunize unhandled birds, prevent virus introduction, or demonstrate population-level protection. Before any broader strategy, officials would need evidence on vaccine response, duration of protection, breeding effects, logistics, permitting and the scale of effort required across the other colonies.
Where shy albatrosses live
The species breeds only on Albatross Island, Mewstone and Pedra Branca in Tasmania. Albatross Island’s accessibility is the reason it was selected for repeated dosing and close observation; it should not be taken to mean that the other colonies can be treated in the same way.
For now, the project is a preventive experiment conducted while the colonies have no reported H5 signs, not a response to a confirmed outbreak among these birds. Its result will help determine whether vaccination can become one tool in protecting shy albatrosses if H5 bird flu reaches their breeding islands.
