Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort are separate Wii games. The original includes five sports—tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing. Resort is a follow-up with 12 leisure sports on Wuhu Island and requires Wii MotionPlus functionality. Buy both discs if you want both lineups.

For Resort, use either an original Wii Remote with the Wii MotionPlus attachment or a Wii Remote Plus with MotionPlus built in. A Nunchuk is needed for certain activities, and some multiplayer modes require the relevant controller and accessory for every player.

Competitive Resort multiplayer Wii Sports Resort Additional compatible Wii Remotes and MotionPlus functionality; a Nunchuk for modes that specify one. Equipment varies by activity, so use the manual rather than buying a Nunchuk for every player automatically.

Nintendo’s product information describes the original five-sport lineup and Resort’s distinct 12-sport design rather than a single expanded edition. Resort also uses the more precise motion tracking supplied by MotionPlus. Nintendo’s developer interview and Resort product page document these distinctions.

What is included in Wii Sports?

Wii Sports is the original collection built around five familiar events:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Tennis: Swing-based rallies and doubles-style play.
  • Golf: A motion-controlled golf swing and course play.
  • Bowling: Roll timing and direction controlled with the Wii Remote.
  • Baseball: Batting and pitching actions.
  • Boxing: Punching with the Wii Remote and Nunchuk-style two-hand control.

Nintendo’s developer material identifies these five sports as the original game’s complete lineup. The official support index provides manuals for Wii Sports, Wii Sports Resort and Wii accessories if you need to verify a particular controller arrangement: Nintendo Wii manuals.

The reviewed official sources do not establish an extra MotionPlus requirement for Wii Sports. That is why a MotionPlus attachment should not be treated as a universal Wii Sports purchase. If you are troubleshooting an uncommon console, controller or regional package, consult the original game’s manual and the console’s compatibility documentation.

What is included in Wii Sports Resort?

Resort moves the setting to Wuhu Island and offers 12 leisure sports. Nintendo’s materials name examples including swordplay, power cruising, wakeboarding and disc dog. The activities are a separate lineup, not additional modes inside the first Wii Sports disc.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Resort was released in the United Kingdom on 24 July 2009. It is a Wii title, so a disc must match the regional edition supported by your console. The date is a historical release detail; it does not indicate current stock, pricing or condition of second-hand copies. See the Nintendo Resort product page for the product-era description.

The defining technical change is MotionPlus. Resort expects the Wii Remote to report orientation more precisely than the original controller alone can provide. An original Wii Remote can gain that capability through the Wii MotionPlus attachment, while a Wii Remote Plus has the feature integrated into the controller body. Nintendo explains both options on its Wii accessories page.

Do you need MotionPlus for Wii Sports Resort?

Yes. Use one of these two configurations:

  1. Original Wii Remote plus Wii MotionPlus: Attach the MotionPlus unit to the bottom of the compatible Wii Remote before starting Resort.
  2. Wii Remote Plus: Use the integrated MotionPlus controller without a separate attachment.

Resort’s startup instructions include a MotionPlus test and setup procedure. Follow the on-screen calibration directions whenever the game requests them, and keep the controller oriented as shown while it establishes its reference position. The Resort manual and Resort controls manual contain the activity-specific instructions.

Do not confuse a standard Wii Remote with a Wii Remote Plus. The former needs the separate MotionPlus attachment for Resort; the latter already contains the required function. If a listing only says “Wii Remote” and does not identify MotionPlus, ask the seller for the model or a photograph of the controller label.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MotionPlus terminology explained

“MotionPlus” describes the motion-sensing capability Resort expects, not one single piece of hardware. With an older Wii Remote, the capability comes from a separate Wii MotionPlus attachment fitted to the controller. With a Wii Remote Plus, it is built into the remote, so there is no separate module to connect.

This distinction matters when comparing bundles. A seller may list an “original Wii Remote,” a “Wii Remote with MotionPlus,” or a “Wii Remote Plus”; those descriptions do not mean the same thing. Ask which arrangement is included and how many complete controller setups are supplied. A loose attachment without a compatible remote is not a complete Resort controller, and a remote described only as “Wii Remote” should not be assumed to contain MotionPlus.

For the original Wii Sports, Nintendo’s reviewed materials do not establish an additional MotionPlus requirement. Therefore, buying MotionPlus solely for the five original sports is not supported by the product information cited here. If you plan to own both games, treat MotionPlus as a Resort requirement rather than as a requirement shared by both discs.

Does a used Wii Sports Resort copy come with MotionPlus?

Nintendo’s 2009 announcement states that each game came with one Wii MotionPlus accessory. That is a historical package detail, not a guarantee that a used copy still has the accessory or that every regional release had identical contents. Treat the disc, case and MotionPlus unit as separate items when evaluating a listing. Nintendo’s 2009 announcement records the original bundle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before buying a second-hand package, verify:

  • The disc is actually Wii Sports Resort, not the original Wii Sports disc.
  • The listing explicitly includes a Wii MotionPlus attachment or identifies a Wii Remote Plus.
  • The attachment has its protective sleeve, connector and locking mechanism intact if it is the separate type.
  • The disc region matches your Wii console.
  • The seller states whether the case, manual and any included controller are present; these items are often missing from used bundles.

If the accessory is absent, you can still use the game after obtaining a compatible MotionPlus solution separately. The product-era inclusion does not reduce the need to check the contents of today’s listing.

Which Resort activities need a Nunchuk?

Resort does not use one identical controller configuration for all 12 activities. Nintendo’s manual specifies the required equipment by sport and mode. Some activities call for a Nunchuk, while others use only the Wii Remote with MotionPlus. Multiplayer rules can add another requirement for each participating player.

Use this process instead of buying a fixed “one of everything per person” kit:

  1. Open the Resort manual and identify the exact activity and mode.
  2. Check the control diagram for Wii Remote, MotionPlus and Nunchuk symbols.
  3. Count the players who will use that mode simultaneously.
  4. Provide the listed controller and accessory combination for each player where the manual says it is required.
  5. Run the in-game MotionPlus test before beginning a competition, especially after switching controllers.

This distinction matters because buying Nunchuks for everyone can add cost without helping activities that do not use them, while a mode that does require one will not work correctly with MotionPlus alone.

Multiplayer: how many controllers and accessories?

A single Resort package historically supplied one MotionPlus accessory. That is enough for a one-player setup if you also have a compatible Wii Remote, but it does not automatically equip a group. For simultaneous play, plan around the chosen activity rather than the game title alone.

Some Resort multiplayer modes require a Wii Remote, Nunchuk and MotionPlus for each player. Other modes use a different combination. Shigeru Miyamoto recommended obtaining another MotionPlus unit and an additional Wii Remote for competitive play; the extra Wii Remote was sold separately. His recommendation is quoted in Nintendo’s interview: Nintendo interview with Shigeru Miyamoto.

“One more thing is that with this title there is one Wii MotionPlus accessory included, but I would advise people to get hold of another one (plus an additional Wii Remote, which is sold separately) so you can enjoy competing with other players.”

For a two-player session, the practical checklist is:

  • Two compatible Wii Remotes.
  • MotionPlus functionality for both controllers, either through two attachments or two Wii Remote Plus controllers.
  • Two Nunchuks only if the selected mode’s manual entry requires one for each player.
  • Fresh batteries or charged battery packs, plus wrist straps fitted before play.

Adding a third or fourth player repeats the same count: every simultaneous participant needs the controller and accessory combination specified for that mode. A pass-the-controller activity may have a lower hardware requirement, but confirm that behavior in the individual mode instructions.

Solo, two-player and larger-group setups

Session Minimum planning question What to verify
Solo Resort play Do you have one complete MotionPlus controller? Use one original Wii Remote with its attachment or one Wii Remote Plus, then complete the startup test.
Two-player competition Does the selected mode require simultaneous controllers? Count two compatible remotes and two MotionPlus solutions; add Nunchuks only where the manual specifies them.
Three or four players Is the mode simultaneous or turn-based? Simultaneous modes may require a complete setup for every player. Turn-based play can have different requirements, so read that mode’s instructions.

This approach prevents two common purchasing errors: assuming one included accessory equips the whole room, and buying several Nunchuks for activities that do not use them. The title alone cannot answer those questions; the activity and mode determine the hardware.

Cost and availability: what can and cannot be assumed

There is no reliable single “Resort price” to use as a buying rule. Nintendo’s product and announcement pages establish the original package arrangement, not today’s used-market price, stock, condition or seller reliability. A lower-priced disc that lacks MotionPlus may cost more overall once a compatible controller solution is added.

When comparing listings, calculate the complete setup rather than the disc price alone: game disc, one complete MotionPlus controller for solo play, extra complete controllers for simultaneous players, and any Nunchuks required by the chosen mode. Also account for whether the seller includes the case, manual and original accessory. Prices and availability vary by territory and condition, so verify the actual contents of each listing.

Choosing between the games

Decision question Choose Wii Sports when… Choose Wii Sports Resort when…
Which sports do you want? You specifically want tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing. You want the Wuhu Island leisure-sports lineup, including swordplay, power cruising, wakeboarding or disc dog.
What controllers do you own? You have a standard Wii setup and do not want to source MotionPlus hardware. You already have MotionPlus functionality or are willing to obtain it.
What kind of session? You want the original five-sport party format. You want more varied activities and are prepared to match equipment to each mode.
Do you want every sport? By itself, it cannot provide Resort activities. By itself, it cannot provide the original five-sport disc lineup.

There is no upgrade path that turns one disc into the other. The correct choice follows the sports you want first, then the controller hardware that those sports require.

Buying both games: a practical checklist

  1. Identify the console: Confirm that you have a working Wii and that the disc region is appropriate for it.
  2. List the desired activities: Write down whether you need the original five sports, Resort’s activities, or both.
  3. Inventory controllers: Count standard Wii Remotes, Wii Remote Plus controllers, MotionPlus attachments and Nunchuks.
  4. Match Resort hardware: If Resort is on your list, ensure at least one controller has MotionPlus functionality for solo play, then add hardware according to the multiplayer mode.
  5. Inspect used listings: Verify disc identity, region, condition and package contents rather than relying on a stock photograph.
  6. Read the mode instructions: Check the manual before a group session so a required Nunchuk or additional MotionPlus unit is not discovered at the start of play.

Current prices, inventory and condition vary by seller and are not established by Nintendo’s historical product pages. Treat any advertised bundle as a seller-specific package and confirm its actual contents.

Setup and calibration for Resort

First-time setup

  1. Connect the Wii and insert the Resort disc.
  2. Attach MotionPlus to the original Wii Remote, or select a Wii Remote Plus.
  3. Synchronize the controller with the console using the Wii’s normal controller-pairing procedure.
  4. Start Resort and complete the MotionPlus test when prompted.
  5. Place the controller in the neutral position shown on screen during calibration.

When controls feel inaccurate

  • Repeat the MotionPlus test after setting the controller on a stable surface as instructed.
  • Make sure the attachment is fully seated and its connector is not obstructed by a case or third-party grip.
  • Replace weak batteries before diagnosing the game or accessory.
  • Use the activity’s specified Nunchuk and reconnect it if the game does not detect it.
  • Try another known-compatible Wii Remote Plus or MotionPlus attachment to isolate a controller fault.

The manuals provide the authoritative sequence for the startup test, control diagrams and activity-specific equipment. Use the controls manual when the general manual’s overview is not specific enough.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

Buying only one disc for both lineups

The five original sports and Resort’s 12 activities belong to separate titles. A listing that contains only one disc cannot provide both collections.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Assuming every Wii Remote supports Resort

Resort requires MotionPlus functionality. Check for a separate attachment or the “Plus” integrated design before purchase.

Assuming the historical bundle is intact

One MotionPlus accessory was included with the original package according to Nintendo’s 2009 announcement, but used copies may contain only the disc. Ask for a contents list.

Buying a Nunchuk for every player without checking the mode

Requirements differ by activity. Read the manual’s equipment diagram and buy only the additional hardware that the selected mode calls for.

Confusing an attachment with a complete controller

A Wii MotionPlus unit is an accessory for an original Wii Remote; it is not itself a Wii Remote. A Wii Remote Plus is the all-in-one alternative. Check that a bundle contains the complete combination you need.

Frequently searched questions answered

Is Wii Sports Resort an expansion for Wii Sports?

No. It is a separate Wii game with its own disc and a different 12-activity lineup.

Can I play Resort with a regular Wii Remote?

Only if that Wii Remote is paired with a Wii MotionPlus attachment. A standard controller without MotionPlus functionality does not satisfy Resort’s controller requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do I need both games to play Resort?

No. Resort runs as its own title. You need both discs only when you want both the original five sports and the Resort activities.

Does every Resort sport use a Nunchuk?

No. The manual assigns equipment by activity and mode; some use a Nunchuk and others do not.

Is one MotionPlus accessory enough for multiplayer?

Only for a setup in which one player uses it at a time. Modes that require simultaneous MotionPlus controllers need one compatible unit per participating player.

Which game includes tennis, golf, bowling, baseball and boxing?

Those five sports are the lineup identified for the original Wii Sports. Resort does not replace that disc or add those sports to it.

Was MotionPlus included with every original Resort package?

Nintendo’s 2009 announcement says each game came with one Wii MotionPlus accessory. For a used copy, verify the actual contents because the accessory may be missing and regional packages may differ.

Can I buy Resort without buying a Wii Sports disc?

Yes. Resort is a standalone Wii title. You need the original Wii Sports disc only if you also want its five-sport lineup.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Wii Sports and Wii Sports Resort use the same disc?

No. They are separate Wii games. Buy both discs if you want all five original sports and Resort’s 12 leisure sports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the cheapest complete way to start Resort?

Use a Resort disc plus either an original Wii Remote with a compatible Wii MotionPlus attachment or a Wii Remote Plus. Compare complete bundle contents, not disc price alone.

How many MotionPlus units do four players need?

A simultaneous mode that requires MotionPlus for each player needs four compatible MotionPlus setups. Check whether the specific activity is simultaneous or turn-based.

Do I need a Nunchuk to play the original Wii Sports?

The cited materials do not establish a universal extra MotionPlus requirement for Wii Sports. Controller details should be checked in that game’s manual for a particular setup.

How can I tell whether a used remote is Wii Remote Plus?

Ask the seller to identify the model or provide a clear photograph. A listing that says only “Wii Remote” does not confirm integrated MotionPlus.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Resort ask me to test MotionPlus?

Resort’s startup instructions include a MotionPlus test and setup procedure so the controller can establish its reference position. Follow the on-screen calibration directions.

The Bottom Line

Choose Wii Sports for its five original sports and Wii Sports Resort for its separate 12-activity Wuhu Island lineup. Resort requires MotionPlus functionality through either an attachment or a Wii Remote Plus. Check the manual for Nunchuk requirements, count complete controller setups for simultaneous players, and verify the contents and region of every used listing. Buy both discs only when you want both collections.
