If Wii Sports Resort says your Wii MotionPlus is not working, start with the game’s own calibration rather than replacing hardware. Choose the sport and players, let the automatic calibration finish, then open the pause menu with +, select Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory, and press A. If the controls are still wrong, place the controller buttons-down on a flat, horizontal surface for 10 seconds, check the connector and batteries, reduce wireless interference, and cross-test the accessory with another Wii Remote. Those steps distinguish a bad calibration from a failing accessory or remote.
What to do first when Wii MotionPlus is not working
- Start Wii Sports Resort, choose a sport and the number of players, and allow the game’s calibration to complete.
- During play, press + to open the pause menu. Point to Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory and press A.
- For a full recalibration, start a MotionPlus-compatible game and put the Wii Remote Plus, or the original Wii Remote with its MotionPlus accessory attached, buttons-down on a flat horizontal surface. Leave it still for 10 seconds before testing.
- If the problem remains, verify that the game supports MotionPlus, push the accessory connector fully into the remote, and check battery level from the Wii HOME menu.
- After changing batteries or disconnecting and reconnecting the accessory during play, calibrate again.
- Finally, test the accessory with another Wii Remote or test another MotionPlus accessory with the same remote. This isolates the failed component.
Nintendo documents the in-game procedure in the Wii Sports Resort instruction manual. A 10-second wait is an operating instruction, not a failure-rate or accuracy statistic.
How Wii MotionPlus, Wii Remote and Wii Remote Plus differ
There are two relevant controller arrangements:
| Arrangement | MotionPlus location | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Original Wii Remote (RVL-003) with a separate accessory | External Wii MotionPlus module connected to the remote’s expansion connector | Confirm the connector is fully inserted and that the module is not being disconnected during play |
| Wii Remote Plus (RVL-036) | MotionPlus technology is built into the remote | Do not attach a separate accessory; the built-in system already supplies MotionPlus control |
Nintendo’s Wii Remote Plus manual says the controller incorporates Wii MotionPlus technology for more precise and detailed gameplay control. Attaching a separate MotionPlus accessory to a Wii Remote Plus is unnecessary and adds no feature. Check the model number near the remote’s expansion connector: Nintendo identifies RVL-003 as a licensed Wii Remote and RVL-036 as a licensed Wii Remote Plus.

1. Run Wii Sports Resort’s calibration
Wii Sports Resort performs MotionPlus calibration after you select a sport and the number of players. If the response becomes inaccurate after the game begins, use the manual command instead of restarting at random:

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Press + while playing to display the pause menu.
- Point at Calibrate Wii MotionPlus Accessory.
- Press A and follow the on-screen calibration state.
Keep the controller still while calibration is taking place. The game is establishing its reference position; moving it during that process can leave the reference incorrect. If more than one player is affected, calibrate each remote in the game’s pause menu rather than assuming one remote’s result applies to every controller.
2. Perform Nintendo’s flat-surface recalibration
Use this procedure when in-game calibration does not correct drift or the controller gradually points in the wrong direction:
- Launch a game that uses MotionPlus.
- Set the Wii Remote Plus, or the original Wii Remote with the accessory attached, on a flat, horizontal surface such as a table.
- Place it with the buttons facing down.
- Do not move it for 10 seconds.
- Resume play and check whether the motion now tracks normally.
This procedure applies to both controller arrangements. If the controller was resting at an angle, on a soft surface, or was moved during the wait, repeat it on a stable horizontal surface. Do not hold the remote in your hand for this particular reset: the point is to give the sensor a motionless reference.

3. Check game support and the physical connection
MotionPlus only works when the game supports it. Confirm that the title you launched is a MotionPlus game before treating the lack of enhanced motion as a fault. Wii Sports Resort is designed for MotionPlus controls.
On an original Wii Remote, inspect the accessory connection at the bottom of the remote. Remove and reinsert the connector several times so it seats completely, then run calibration again. Nintendo specifically lists disconnecting and reconnecting MotionPlus during play as an event that can require recalibration.
Do not add an external module to a Wii Remote Plus. Its MotionPlus hardware is internal, so an external attachment cannot improve its capability and may create a confusing setup. If the plug feels loose, avoid judging performance until the accessory is fully seated and the remote has been recalibrated.

4. Check battery power before diagnosing motion hardware
Low power can make a controller appear unreliable. Check the battery level from the Wii HOME menu and install fresh batteries if the level is low. After changing batteries during a game, recalibrate before judging the result; Nintendo identifies an in-game battery change as another situation that can trigger recalibration.
Battery troubleshooting is separate from calibration. A controller that will not respond at all, will not synchronize, or loses basic pointer operation needs remote-power and synchronization troubleshooting in addition to the MotionPlus checks. Do not assume that a successful calibration can repair a remote that has no power or has lost synchronization. If several remotes fail simultaneously, check the console and its synchronization state rather than replacing every accessory.
5. Reduce drift and erratic movement
When the cursor or sports action moves by itself, responds inconsistently, or becomes inaccurate after the console has been running, work through environmental causes:
- Recalibrate after a battery change or after disconnecting and reconnecting the accessory while the game was running.
- Allow the controller to settle when moving it between a cold environment and a warm one. Nintendo identifies sudden temperature changes as a calibration factor.
- Move or switch off nearby wireless devices, including cordless phones, wireless keyboards, and wireless mice, then test again.
- Use controlled motions. Avoid unusually fast or exaggerated swings while diagnosing the problem; Nintendo advises slowing these movements.
Change one condition at a time where possible. If the response improves after a wireless device is moved, the symptom was likely interference rather than a failed MotionPlus sensor. If only slower movements work, repeat the calibration on a stable surface before drawing a hardware conclusion. Test the same sport and a similar movement after each change so you are comparing like with like.
6. Separate an accessory fault from a remote fault
Cross-testing is the most useful check before buying anything:
- Connect the suspect MotionPlus accessory to another compatible Wii Remote and test the same sport.
- If that is not possible, connect a known-good MotionPlus accessory to the original remote.
- Use the same calibration procedure for each combination.
- Compare the results: a problem that follows the accessory points to the accessory; a problem that stays with one remote points to that remote or its power/synchronization state.
For a Wii Remote Plus, the built-in MotionPlus cannot be removed for this particular test. Instead, test that remote against another known-good remote in the same game and verify batteries and synchronization separately. Record which remote, accessory, batteries, and sport were used; that prevents a loose connector or a missed recalibration from producing a misleading comparison.

Use the symptom to choose the next test
| Observed symptom | Start with | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Controls are inaccurate immediately after selecting a sport | Use the pause-menu calibration, then the 10-second flat-surface procedure | A corrected response indicates a calibration reference problem |
| Motion becomes wrong after changing batteries | Run calibration again after installing fresh batteries | If it recovers, the battery change required a new reference; if not, continue with connection and cross-testing |
| Motion becomes wrong after unplugging and reconnecting the accessory | Fully reseat the connector and recalibrate | Recovery suggests a connection or recalibration event rather than immediate proof of hardware failure |
| Movement is erratic near wireless equipment | Move or turn off nearby cordless phones, keyboards, and mice, then test controlled motions | Improvement after removing a device indicates interference was contributing |
| Remote does not respond or synchronize at all | Install fresh batteries and troubleshoot Wii Remote synchronization separately | This is a basic remote problem as well as a possible MotionPlus problem |
| The same fault follows one accessory between remotes | Repeat the test with a different accessory if available | The accessory is the likely failing component |
| The same fault stays with one remote while accessories work elsewhere | Check that remote’s batteries and synchronization, then use another licensed remote if available | The remote is the likely source |
| A Wii Remote Plus is being used with an external module | Remove the external module and use the built-in MotionPlus system | The external attachment is unnecessary on this model |
Calibration versus synchronization: do not mix the diagnoses
Calibration concerns how the game interprets motion and orientation. Synchronization concerns whether the Wii console recognizes and responds to the remote at all. A remote can be synchronized yet need MotionPlus calibration, or it can have a good accessory but fail to respond because its batteries are depleted or synchronization has been lost.
If buttons, pointer, or basic remote response are absent, first install fresh batteries and restore synchronization using the Wii Remote’s normal synchronization process. Once the remote responds, return to the MotionPlus calibration steps. If basic response works but sports actions drift, stay with calibration, interference, temperature, and cross-testing rather than repeatedly re-synchronizing.
How to identify the controller before testing
Original Wii Remote with external MotionPlus
This arrangement has a separate module attached at the expansion connector. The module must be fully seated, and removing or reconnecting it during play can invalidate the current calibration. Test the remote and accessory as separate components by swapping one at a time.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWii Remote Plus
This model contains MotionPlus internally. Nintendo’s licensed model designation is RVL-036. It supports MotionPlus games without an external attachment, so the relevant checks are batteries, synchronization, calibration, interference, temperature changes, and comparison with another remote.
Original Wii Remote without MotionPlus capability
Nintendo identifies the licensed original Wii Remote as RVL-003. If a game requires MotionPlus and no compatible MotionPlus system is present, motion features cannot operate as intended. Confirm the model and setup before attempting to correct drift.
When replacement becomes reasonable
Replacement should come after the diagnostic sequence, not before it. Consider an accessory or remote replacement only when:

- the game supports MotionPlus;
- the controller has adequate battery power;
- the connector is fully seated, where an external accessory is used;
- the game and flat-surface calibration procedures have been completed;
- nearby wireless devices and unusually fast movements have been ruled out; and
- cross-testing shows that the same fault follows one accessory or one remote.
If cross-testing identifies the external module, look for a compatible replacement Wii MotionPlus accessory. If it identifies the controller and the remote is an original model, a Wii Remote Plus is the alternative controller type that includes MotionPlus internally. Nintendo’s support guidance is the appropriate next step when the listed checks do not resolve the fault; current marketplace inventory, pricing, and repair availability vary and are not established here.

Practical decision tree
- Does the remote respond to buttons and basic pointing? If no, replace batteries and address synchronization before MotionPlus diagnosis. If yes, continue.
- Is the controller a Wii Remote Plus? If yes, remove any unnecessary external module. If no, confirm the separate accessory is firmly connected.
- Does Wii Sports Resort support the attached configuration? If yes, run the pause-menu calibration. If no, use supported hardware or a supported title.
- Did calibration correct the motion? If yes, resume play. If no, perform the 10-second buttons-down procedure.
- Does the fault appear after batteries or a reconnection? If yes, recalibrate after that event and retest.
- Is the motion still erratic? Remove nearby wireless devices, avoid exaggerated movements, and account for sudden temperature changes.
- Does the problem follow the accessory or the remote? Cross-test to identify which component needs further support or replacement.
Common mistakes that make troubleshooting take longer
- Replacing the accessory before running the game’s calibration.
- Calibrating while holding the controller instead of leaving it buttons-down on a flat, horizontal surface.
- Continuing to use an accessory after it was partially disconnected during play without recalibrating.
- Calling every failure a MotionPlus fault when the remote has no battery power or synchronization.
- Attaching an external MotionPlus module to a Wii Remote Plus.
- Testing with rapid, exaggerated swings and interpreting the resulting inconsistency as proof of sensor failure.
- Ignoring nearby wireless devices or a sudden cold-to-warm temperature change.
How to run a clean retest
Once you have made a change, return to a repeatable setup: use the same sport, the same remote position, and a clear area away from the wireless devices you moved. Start with buttons and pointer response, then perform one controlled motion before trying a full swing. If the first test succeeds but later play fails, note what changed immediately beforehand—battery replacement, an accessory reconnection, a temperature change, or a nearby device being switched on. Those triggers are more useful than repeatedly restarting the console.
For cross-testing, change only one component at a time. Keep the original remote with the suspect accessory, then move that accessory to the second remote. Swapping both at once cannot show which part caused the symptom. Recalibrate every new combination because each connection or battery event can require a fresh reference. This method gives Nintendo support a clear description if you eventually need help.
Following the checks in this order gives each test a clear purpose: calibration establishes the reference, setup and power checks remove simple causes, environmental checks address erratic operation, and cross-testing identifies the component that actually needs attention.

Can I use an external MotionPlus accessory with a Wii Remote Plus?
You do not need one. Wii Remote Plus model RVL-036 has MotionPlus built in, and Nintendo says attaching the separate accessory is unnecessary and adds no feature.
Why did MotionPlus stop working after I changed batteries?
Nintendo identifies changing batteries during play as an event that can require recalibration. Install fresh batteries if needed, then run the pause-menu calibration before testing motion again.
What if the Wii Remote will not turn on or synchronize?
Treat that as a basic Wii Remote problem as well as a possible MotionPlus problem. Install fresh batteries and restore synchronization using the remote’s normal synchronization process. Motion calibration cannot fix a remote with no power or no console connection.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Nintendo advises checking for radio-frequency interference. Move or switch off nearby cordless phones, wireless keyboards, and wireless mice, then test controlled movements again.
How can I tell whether the accessory or remote is defective?
Try the suspect accessory on another compatible Wii Remote, or try a known-good MotionPlus accessory on the original remote. If the fault follows the accessory, it is the likely cause; if it stays with one remote, inspect that remote’s batteries and synchronization.
When should I buy a replacement Wii MotionPlus?
Only after confirming game support, adequate battery power, a fully seated connector, completed calibration, reduced interference, and a cross-test showing that the same fault follows the external accessory. If the remote itself is the problem, a Wii Remote Plus is the controller type with MotionPlus built in.
The Bottom Line
Start with Wii Sports Resort’s pause-menu calibration, then perform Nintendo’s 10-second buttons-down reset. Check batteries, connector seating, controller model, temperature and wireless interference before cross-testing. Replace an accessory or remote only when the fault consistently follows that component.
