Changing a Wi-Fi country code does not give you legal permission to use restricted 5 GHz or 6 GHz frequencies. The setting is part of a device’s regulatory configuration, not a universal band-unlock switch. Check local rules and support for your exact router and client instead of falsifying a region or trying to bypass device protections.

Does changing the country setting enable 6 GHz Wi-Fi?

Not by itself. A device must support the band, the network equipment and client must be compatible, and operation must be permitted under the rules that apply where the equipment is used. A country-code change cannot make an otherwise unauthorized frequency legal.

Rules vary by jurisdiction, and the examples below are not worldwide guidance. Verify allowed frequencies and operating conditions with your local regulator; do not assume that channels permitted in the United States or another country are permitted where you live.

What must be in place for 6 GHz Wi-Fi?

  • Local authorization: The regulator must permit the relevant frequencies and device class in your location.
  • Compatible network equipment: The router or access point must support 6 GHz.
  • Compatible client: The phone, computer, or other device connecting to the network must also support 6 GHz and be configured for use in that region.
  • Permitted device class and operation: Rules may depend on the equipment type, location, and coordination requirements.
  • Manufacturer support: Check documentation for the exact model and regional version; a product’s general band capability does not establish that every frequency is allowed everywhere.

Apple, for example, says a Wi-Fi 6E network requires a Wi-Fi 6E-capable router or access point and a supported client, and notes that 6 GHz features are unavailable in some regions. Apple’s Wi-Fi 6E support guidance is specific to its devices and is not a substitute for your local regulator’s rules.

Why country and device rules matter

United States: rules depend on device class

The US 6 GHz band spans 5.925–7.125 GHz. FCC rules set conditions by device class. For specified indoor access points and subordinate devices, the regulation requires the notice: “FCC regulations restrict operation of this device to indoor use only.” Do not apply that restriction indiscriminately to every 6 GHz device type.

Standard-power access points and fixed client devices must obtain available frequencies and power levels through an authorized Automated Frequency Coordination (AFC) system. These are US requirements, not a general rule for other countries. The US rule, 47 CFR § 15.407, sets out the applicable device and operating conditions.

In a December 11, 2024 announcement, the FCC said its action expanded very-low-power device operations across all 1,200 MHz of the US 6 GHz band. That figure describes the US band and the specified very-low-power device context; it does not mean all devices may use all those frequencies under identical conditions. FCC announcement.

Hong Kong: the permitted portion is narrower

Hong Kong’s Office of the Communications Authority (OFCA) says Wi-Fi 6E/7 devices are permitted only in the designated 5.925–6.425 GHz portion. A device capable of operating beyond that range does not thereby gain permission to do so in Hong Kong. Check OFCA’s Wi-Fi 6E/7 guidance for the local position.

Safe ways to troubleshoot a missing 6 GHz network

  1. Confirm your location’s rules. Find the regulator’s current guidance for the relevant Wi-Fi band and device class. Do not use another country’s channel list as a substitute.
  2. Check both exact models. Look up the router or access point and client specifications and manufacturer support for the regional versions. Confirm that each supports 6 GHz where you are.
  3. Review documented router settings. Use the manufacturer’s supported configuration options. A missing band may reflect model capability, regional support, or a setting—not a country code that should be falsified.
  4. Use supported client troubleshooting. Apple recommends one SSID across 2.4, 5, and 6 GHz for best performance and compatibility on its networks. On supported Apple devices, a per-network Wi-Fi 6E mode setting can turn off 6 GHz use when troubleshooting a network issue; this is a supported troubleshooting control, not a way to change regional authorization. See Apple’s instructions.
  5. Ask the manufacturer or local regulator about unexplained restrictions. Provide the exact model and your location so the answer can account for the product’s regional configuration and applicable rules.

Why a driver edit or firmware flash is not a reliable unlock

A country-code edit, driver modification, or firmware flash cannot change local law or guarantee that restricted frequencies become available. The FCC describes equipment-authorization software security controls intended to ensure devices operate as authorized and cannot be modified to operate otherwise. See FCC equipment authorization guidance. Avoid attempts to falsify a region or defeat configuration protections.

What to check before buying 6 GHz equipment

Check What to verify
Local frequency range The regulator’s permitted frequencies and conditions for your location and device class.
Router or access point Whether the exact model and regional version support 6 GHz.
Client device Whether the exact client supports 6 GHz and is supported for your region.
Device class and location Whether the equipment may operate where you plan to use it, and whether coordination or other conditions apply.
Manufacturer documentation Supported settings and regional limitations for both products.

Buying a 6 GHz-capable router is relevant only if your client also supports the band and its use is permitted where you are. New equipment does not override a client’s regional configuration or local rules.
