A wider book-style foldable is the better fit if you want a less elongated phone while it is closed and a broader canvas when it is open. A taller, narrower design may suit you better if you want the cover screen to feel closer to a conventional smartphone. The right choice depends on which screen you use most and what you do on it—not on a universal rule that one shape is best.

Compare the phone closed and open

A book-style foldable has two distinct experiences: a cover screen for using the phone while shut and a larger inner screen revealed when you open it. Those screens can favor different shapes. If you mostly check messages, type, and use apps without unfolding the device, cover-screen comfort may matter most. If you regularly read, browse, or work across a larger display, the inner screen’s proportions may carry more weight.

Diagonal size alone does not tell you whether a screen will feel comfortable. Width, height, aspect ratio, keyboard layout, and your hand size all affect how easy it is to reach controls and type. When possible, try the closed phone in your hand and test the apps you actually use.

What a wider shape changes

Closed-screen use

A wider cover screen can make the folded phone feel less narrow and may give text, keyboards, and app layouts more horizontal room. Samsung describes the Galaxy Z Fold7’s wider cover display as intended to make typing and browsing more natural while folded. That is Samsung’s product positioning, not an independent comparative test.

Samsung’s 2025 specification sheet lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 cover display at 6.5 inches with a 21:9 ratio. That figure describes the screen’s diagonal and proportions; it does not by itself establish how comfortable the phone will be for a particular person.

Inner-screen tasks

When opened, a broader canvas may feel more useful for reading, browsing, documents, and placing more than one app on screen. A taller display can provide more vertical room for scrolling. For video, the result depends on the content’s aspect ratio and the app’s layout, so do not assume that either shape will always show more picture without testing the exact combination.

Portability

Compare folded dimensions and weight for the exact models and regional variants you are considering. Samsung lists the Galaxy Z Fold7 at 215 g and 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm when folded. Those are manufacturer specifications, not a general measure of how portable a wide design is compared with every taller foldable.

When a taller cover screen is the better choice

If you want the closed phone to behave as much as possible like a familiar tall smartphone, an elongated cover display may feel more natural. It can suit readers who favor a vertically oriented layout or prefer a narrow device in one hand. The trade-off is personal: the same narrow shape that feels manageable to one person may feel cramped to another, especially for typing or browsing.

The Pixel Fold’s original passport-like proportions and the move toward a more elongated later design have been described by Android Central in its 2025 comparison of the Pixel 10 Pro Fold and original Pixel Fold. That is a reported design direction, not a complete official timeline or a claim that every later foldable follows it.

Does a passport-style foldable’s shorter cover screen feel cramped?

It can, depending on your hands, keyboard habits, and the apps you use. One Reddit discussion captures the question in a reader’s words: “For anyone who’s used a passport-style foldable: does the shorter cover screen feel cramped?” That is an individual forum post, not a survey or evidence of how most owners feel. Use it as a prompt to test the cover screen yourself rather than as a verdict.

What specifications can—and cannot—tell you

Example Published details Useful context
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold7 8.0-inch main display; 6.5-inch, 21:9 cover display; 215 g; 158.4 × 72.8 × 8.9 mm folded Samsung Electronics America’s 2025 specification sheet. These figures identify one wide-cover example; they do not prove that its shape is more comfortable for everyone.
HONOR Magic V3 9.2 mm folded, 4.35 mm unfolded, and 226 g HONOR’s UK product page gives these manufacturer figures for a market-specific variant. Check the regional model before comparing dimensions or weight.

Specifications are useful for checking dimensions, screen sizes, and weight, but they cannot settle questions such as typing comfort, app behavior, or whether the inner display suits your daily work. The available evidence does not establish a complete current model lineup, local prices, warranty terms, repair access, or retailer availability. Check those details for your country and exact variant before buying.

How to choose between wide and tall

  1. Start with your closed-phone routine. List the apps and tasks you use without unfolding the phone: messaging, calls, notifications, browsing, or navigation.
  2. Try the cover screen. Type a message, reach common controls, and read a page while holding the phone as you normally would. Notice whether the width and height feel comfortable rather than judging by diagonal size.
  3. Test the inner screen with real tasks. Open a document, browse a site, and try your usual multitasking or video apps. Check how the content fits instead of assuming a broader or taller screen will always be better.
  4. Compare the folded hardware. Check manufacturer-listed weight and folded dimensions for the exact regional models, then consider how each feels in a pocket or bag.
  5. Check ownership details locally. Confirm the price, warranty, repair options, return policy, and availability for the model and country you plan to buy in.

Verdict: choose wide if the inner canvas matters more

A wide or passport-like foldable is a sensible preference if you value a less elongated closed shape and want a broader inner display for reading, browsing, or working. Choose a taller design if a conventional-feeling cover screen is your priority. The Galaxy Z Fold7 is a concrete example of Samsung’s wider-cover approach, but its published specifications and marketing claims cannot establish which shape you will prefer.
