Wi-SUN FAN is a standards-based IPv6 wireless mesh profile for large outdoor IoT networks, including utility meters, distribution equipment, streetlights and EV charging infrastructure. For a deployment, the key decisions are which FAN profile and frequency band fit the use case, whether equipment has the right certification, and whether a targeted FAN 1.1 upgrade solves a specific need.

What Wi-SUN FAN is designed to do

Wi-SUN Alliance describes a Field Area Network (FAN) as communications infrastructure for very large-scale outdoor networks. Its examples include advanced metering infrastructure, electricity, water and gas meters, distribution switches and substations, streetlights, parking and traffic systems, and EV charging stations. Smart utility networks use interoperable IPv6 communication over an IEEE 802.15.4-SUN-based wireless mesh.

That makes FAN a candidate when many outdoor devices need to exchange readings, commands or status information across a broad service area. It is a network profile, not a complete deployment plan: equipment selection, site coverage, backhaul, credentials, operations and lifecycle support still need to be designed for the project.

How the mesh works—and what resilience means

In a mesh, devices can relay traffic for other devices on the route toward a collection point. Wi-SUN Alliance says that when a node or collection point disconnects or loses power, devices can reconnect through nearby devices or another collection point. This is a resilience design property, not a promise that every route, service or deployment will remain available through every failure.

For planning, map where traffic must travel and identify the roles of field devices, routers and border routers. Check whether the intended network has viable alternate paths and collection points for the failure cases that matter at each site. The Alliance materials do not prescribe a universal node count, coverage radius or bill of materials, so those values must come from project-specific design and validation.

How to choose the profile, band and certification

Wi-SUN certification is specific to a profile and frequency band. A product that is certified for one profile or band is not automatically certified for every Wi-SUN deployment. The Alliance’s certified-products information distinguishes profile certification, which includes upper layers as well as the physical layer (PHY), from PHY certification. Its FAQ says FAN Profile Certification requires PHY certification for FAN data-rate modes.

Procurement check What to verify
Use case and profile For the outdoor utility and infrastructure use cases in this article, determine whether FAN is the relevant profile; other Wi-SUN profiles address different use cases.
Exact product and certification level Check the current Wi-SUN Alliance certified-products list for the product and whether its listing is for PHY or profile certification.
Frequency band and market Confirm the product supports the band required for the deployment country and that its certification applies to that band.
Local rules and interoperability Verify applicable national or regional regulations, and confirm interoperability with the intended existing network and equipment.
Deployment and lifecycle Plan credential provisioning, border routers, backhaul, network operations and vendor lifecycle support alongside the radio equipment.

The Alliance says certified products are tested by independent authorized laboratories for conformance to relevant protocol standards and interoperability with other certified equipment implementing the same profile in the same frequency band. Certification is useful evidence for procurement, but it does not replace checking the exact deployment configuration and local requirements.

Which regional bands should planners check?

The Alliance FAQ lists the following regional frequency ranges. Treat these as Alliance summaries rather than a substitute for current rules: permitted spectrum, channel plans and device approvals must be verified for the deployment jurisdiction and product.

The Alliance says FAN 1.1 is compatible with FAN 1.0. Its FAQ describes a targeted upgrade: add FAN 1.1-certified routers and border routers where higher performance, lower power consumption or newly supported bands are needed. An existing FAN 1.0 implementation that meets project requirements does not need an upgrade solely because FAN 1.1 is available.

Use this decision sequence

  1. Define the gap. Identify whether the current network is constrained by throughput, field-device power needs or a band requirement.
  2. Check the certified options. Verify that FAN 1.1 products for the necessary router or border-router role and band appear on the current certified-products list.
  3. Plan the change against the existing network. Confirm compatibility with the deployed FAN 1.0 equipment and determine where new routers and border routers are required.
  4. Compare benefit with project cost. If FAN 1.0 already meets the operational requirements, retain it; if a defined requirement is unmet, assess a targeted upgrade rather than assuming every endpoint must be replaced.

How to evaluate deployment scale and long-term support

A standards profile and certification do not answer every architecture question. Before procurement, align the network design with the operating environment and service requirements.

  • Coverage and topology: assess the area, obstacles, anticipated node placement, alternate routing paths and collection-point locations.
  • Device roles and power: distinguish field endpoints from routers and border routers; match mains-powered or battery-powered operation to the device’s traffic and maintenance plan.
  • Traffic and backhaul: define reporting frequency, command needs, expected traffic and how border routers connect the mesh to utility or city systems.
  • Security and operations: establish credential handling, monitoring, fault response, configuration management and responsibility for ongoing support.
  • Migration: document the FAN 1.0 baseline, the specific FAN 1.1 capability sought and which network components need to change.

Wi-SUN Alliance’s Smart Utilities material has cited more than 96.5 million Wi-SUN-capable devices worldwide, attributing the figure to Navigant Research, but the page gives no publication year. It is not a dated, independently audited 2026 installed-base count. The same page’s figure of 66 million electricity meters in Japan by 2020 is presented as a past forecast, not a current deployment total. Neither figure should be used as a current market-size measure.
