Yes. A Wi-Fi smart plug lets you switch power to a compatible plug-in device from an app, on a schedule, or through a supported voice assistant. Whether a particular plug will work in your home depends on its Wi-Fi requirements, setup, smart-home compatibility, and electrical rating—and on how the appliance behaves when power is restored.

What a Wi-Fi smart plug actually does

A smart plug sits between a wall outlet and a plug-in device. After setup, it switches power to that device through the plug’s app or supported smart-home controls. Depending on the model, those controls may include schedules, routines, or voice commands.

A plug controls the power supply; it does not add smart features to the appliance itself. The appliance’s behavior after power returns depends on that appliance, so check its instructions if automatic restart matters. Features such as energy monitoring are also model-specific: TP-Link says its Tapo P110 and P115 support it, while the P100 and P105 do not (TP-Link’s Tapo FAQ).

Will it connect to your home Wi-Fi?

Check the exact model’s supported Wi-Fi bands before setup. TP-Link’s Kasa setup guide, last updated April 17, 2026, says the plugs covered by that guide require 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi and do not support 5 GHz (Kasa smart plug setup guide). TP-Link’s TP15 product page also specifies 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (TP15 specifications). These are product-specific examples, not a rule for every smart plug. A 5 GHz-only network will not meet the requirement of those cited models.

Setup can involve more than Wi-Fi. For the Kasa process, TP-Link calls for the Kasa app, a TP-Link account, and a phone connected to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi. Its guide also says that on iOS 14 and later, the Kasa app needs Local Network access during setup. The TP15 lists Bluetooth as an additional setup option. Follow the chosen model’s instructions rather than assuming another brand uses the same onboarding steps.

Will it work with your smart-home assistant?

Assistant support is model-specific. The TP15 product page lists Matter certification and compatibility with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Assistant, and Samsung SmartThings. The Kasa setup guide describes linking supported Echo and Google Home devices after the plug is configured. Check the exact product’s compatibility information and the setup steps for the platform you use; support for one assistant or ecosystem does not establish support for all others.

Will it safely handle the device you want to plug in?

Compare the plug’s electrical limits with the appliance’s requirements. Check voltage, current, wattage, and any stated motor-load limits; a smart plug’s rating is not the same for every model.

For example, TP-Link rates the TP15 for a maximum general or resistive load of 15 A / 1800 W at 120 V. That is the TP15’s stated rating, not a category-wide limit (TP15 specifications). If you are unsure whether a particular appliance’s load is within a plug’s limits, do not rely on a generic smart-plug rating.

Do not plug a power strip or extension cord into a smart plug. TP-Link says it is not recommended because doing so can create an overload risk that may not be obvious to the user (TP-Link’s Tapo FAQ).

Can you use it outdoors?

Only use a model specifically rated for outdoor conditions. TP-Link lists its TP25 as an outdoor plug with an IP65 rating and a maximum load of 15 A / 1800 W. Those specifications apply to the TP25, not to indoor plugs or all outdoor smart plugs (TP25 specifications).

How to choose a plug that fits your setup

  • Network and onboarding: Verify supported Wi-Fi bands, app or account requirements, and whether setup uses Bluetooth or another method.
  • Ecosystem: Look for explicit compatibility with your assistant or smart-home platform, including any required linking steps.
  • Electrical limits: Match voltage, current, wattage, and motor-load requirements to the appliance and plug ratings.
  • Placement and size: Choose an indoor or outdoor model for the location, and check whether its shape blocks a neighboring outlet.
  • Features: Confirm whether the model includes scheduling or energy monitoring; neither should be assumed from the term “smart plug.”

If the plug will not connect

  1. Check the plug’s model number and confirm its supported Wi-Fi band in the manufacturer’s instructions.
  2. Follow that model’s app-based setup steps, including any phone permissions or account requirements.
  3. If setup still fails, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting guidance for that product. Router changes are not a universal fix, and the right steps depend on the model and network.
