To share Wi‑Fi, first decide whether you want to give another device access to an existing network or share your device’s internet connection. For the first, use a nearby password prompt, a Wi‑Fi QR code, or manual password entry. For the second, turn on hotspot or tethering; that usually shares a phone’s cellular data, not the Wi‑Fi network it is currently using.
Choose the kind of sharing you need
| Method | What it shares | Best for | Main constraints |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple nearby password prompt | Credentials for an existing Wi‑Fi network | Nearby Apple devices | Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth must be on; the sharer must be unlocked and connected, contacts must match, and Personal Hotspot must be off. Apple Support |
| Wi‑Fi QR code | Credentials for an existing network | Guest or mixed-device access when scanning is supported | The device must offer a QR option and the recipient must be able to scan it. Apple Support; Microsoft Support |
| Manual password entry | Credentials for an existing network | Devices without a compatible prompt or QR scanner | You need the network name and password. Apple Support |
| Phone hotspot or tethering | The phone’s internet connection | Getting another device online when it cannot join the same Wi‑Fi network | Carrier terms, data allowance, battery, device limits, and connection method may matter. Apple Support; Google Android Help |
| Windows Mobile hotspot | A selected Windows internet connection | Sharing a PC’s Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or cellular connection | Requires the relevant Windows settings and supported networking hardware; cellular sharing uses the data plan. Microsoft Support |
Share an existing Wi‑Fi network
Between nearby Apple devices
- On the receiving iPhone, iPad, or Mac, open Wi‑Fi settings and select the network.
- Keep the Apple device that already knows the password unlocked and connected to that network.
- Make sure Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are on for both devices, each person’s Apple Account email address or phone number is saved in the other person’s Contacts, and Personal Hotspot is off on the sharing device.
- When the Share Password prompt appears on the sharing device, tap the option to share, then finish joining on the receiving device.
If the prompt does not appear, Apple recommends restarting both devices. You can also enter the password manually. Apple’s instructions and exact screens may vary with iOS or iPadOS version. See Apple’s password-sharing steps.
With a QR code
If the device that has the network credentials offers a “show” or “share Wi‑Fi QR code” option, display the code and have the other device scan it with its camera or Wi‑Fi settings. Apple documents showing a network QR code on iPhone; Microsoft documents scanning a QR code to join a Windows hotspot when the receiving device supports it. QR options and scanning behavior vary by device and software version.

Google’s Android tethering instructions do not establish one universal saved-network QR-sharing procedure for all Android phones. Android menus and features differ by manufacturer and OS version, so check the specific device’s Wi‑Fi settings. If QR sharing is unavailable, use the password instead.

- For USB, connect the phone to the other device with a cable and enable USB tethering. Google notes that Mac computers cannot tether to Android by USB.
Google says an Android Wi‑Fi hotspot can share mobile data with up to 10 other devices. This is a stated product capability, not a guarantee that every phone, carrier, or plan permits that many simultaneous connections. Plugging the phone in while tethering can help preserve battery.
iPhone: use Personal Hotspot
Personal Hotspot shares an iPhone’s cellular internet connection with another device over Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth, or cable. Apple notes that it is not available with every carrier; additional fees may apply, and device limits depend on the carrier and iPhone model. The iPhone cannot join an existing Wi‑Fi network and then rebroadcast that same connection through Personal Hotspot. Check Apple’s Personal Hotspot instructions and your carrier’s current terms before relying on it.

Keep shared network access private
- Show a password or QR code only to people you intend to let onto the network. A QR code is access information just like a written password.
- If you use a printed QR code for recurring guests, place it where only those guests can scan it. A phone screen or ordinary printout works for one-time sharing; a sign is optional.
- For temporary internet access, consider whether a hotspot is more appropriate than sharing the password to a network used by other devices. A hotspot may use cellular data and can affect battery life.
