If your device is connected to Wi-Fi but websites and apps cannot reach the internet, the wireless link may be working while the connection beyond your router is not. Start by checking whether the problem affects one device or every device on the network; that distinction helps narrow down where to troubleshoot.
What “connected to Wi-Fi, no internet” means
Wi-Fi connects your device to the local network created by your router. Internet access requires that network to reach your modem and internet service provider (ISP), and then the wider internet. A device can therefore show a Wi-Fi connection even when the modem, router’s upstream connection, or ISP is not providing internet access. Windows may show a message such as “No Internet Connection.”
First find out how many devices are affected
- Try opening a website or app on another phone, computer, or tablet connected to the same Wi-Fi.
- If the other device works, focus on the device that cannot connect: its Wi-Fi settings, saved network, app, firewall, proxy, or VPN.
- If multiple devices have the same problem, focus on the router, modem, and ISP rather than changing settings on each device.
This comparison narrows the fault area; it does not by itself identify a failed component. Apple also recommends checking other devices when considering whether there may be a service outage. Apple’s Wi-Fi connection guidance explains when to check with your ISP.
Check the affected device and Wi-Fi signal
Confirm the basic settings
- Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on and Airplane Mode is off.
- Verify that the device is connected to the intended network.
- Toggle Wi-Fi off and on. If the connection still fails, forget the saved network and reconnect with its password.
- On Windows, you can also run the built-in network troubleshooter. The steps and labels vary by Windows version.
For Android, Google recommends checking Wi-Fi, moving closer to the router, and restarting the router as part of troubleshooting. See Google’s Android internet connection guidance.

Compare signal near and far from the router
Try the device close to the router. If it works nearby but not in its usual location, the wireless signal may be weak where you normally use it. If it fails in both places while other devices work, continue with the device-specific checks.
Inspect and restart the modem and router
Check that the modem and router have power, and make sure their power and modem-to-router cables are seated securely. Look at the visible status lights and note whether they settle into their usual state. Light patterns differ by equipment, so a light alone is not proof of a particular fault.

Power cycling the equipment is different from a factory reset: it does not mean restoring the router’s settings. Microsoft’s restart sequence is:
- Unplug power from the modem and router. Wait at least about 30 seconds.
- Reconnect the modem first and wait for its lights to settle.
- Reconnect the router and allow both devices to finish starting before testing again.
If you have a single modem-router combination device, restart that one device. Connected devices will temporarily lose service during the restart. Do not press a factory-reset button unless you intend to restore the equipment’s settings.

Use Ethernet to separate a Wi-Fi issue from an internet issue
If possible, connect a computer directly to the router with Ethernet and test internet access. Use a compatible port and cable. If Ethernet works while Wi-Fi does not, that points toward the wireless or router path, but it does not prove which part is at fault. If Ethernet also fails, the problem may be with the modem or the connection beyond it.

On Windows, Microsoft also describes checking whether the computer can reach the router. A reply from the router confirms a connection to it, but not necessarily to the internet: Microsoft says, “If you see results like this and are getting a reply, then you have a connection to your Wi-Fi router, so there might be a problem with your modem or ISP.”
When to contact your internet provider
If several devices cannot get online after you restart the equipment, check your ISP’s outage information or contact the provider. When you report the problem, share what you observed rather than assuming a particular part has failed:

- Whether one device or several are affected
- Whether the modem and router lights settle after restarting
- Whether a wired Ethernet connection works, if you were able to test one
- When the problem began
These details can help the provider investigate. If only one device remains offline while others work, continue troubleshooting that device instead of treating it as a confirmed network-wide outage.
