Ordinary heaters are not established as a general cause of Wi-Fi radio interference. If your connection drops near a heater, a physical obstruction, weak coverage, another nearby electronic device, or heat affecting the router may be more likely. Test one possibility at a time, and follow the operating limits for your specific networking equipment.

Can a heater interfere with Wi-Fi?

The available manufacturer guidance identifies devices such as cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, wireless cameras, security systems, and microwave ovens as possible sources of wireless interference. It does not identify ordinary space heaters as a typical direct source. That does not prove no heater can ever affect a particular setup, but it does not support treating heaters in general as Wi-Fi disruptors. Google’s wireless-interference guidance recommends testing suspected electronics individually.

There is no established prevalence figure or controlled comparison here for electric, infrared, oil-filled, or hydronic heaters. A heater being switched on at the same time as a connection problem is not, by itself, proof that the heater caused it.

How a heater could still affect your connection

It may obstruct the signal

Wi-Fi signals can weaken when they pass through or around physical obstacles. Metal and dense building materials are especially relevant; water can also attenuate a signal. Apple rates metal as having very high interference potential and water as medium in its wireless interference guidance. Linksys also notes that water heaters can affect signal strength because Wi-Fi does not pass well through water. Linksys’ guidance concerns signal strength and obstruction, not proof that a heating element emits radio interference.

A metal-bodied heater, water-filled radiator, or heating system placed between the router and a client could therefore contribute to weak reception. A metal cabinet, mirror, or dense wall along the same route may matter as well.

Heat may affect the router itself

A router placed too close to a heat source may operate outside the conditions specified for that model. Google says to keep Nest Wifi devices away from heat sources and direct sunlight. Its Nest Wifi Pro documentation gives an ambient operating range of 0°C to 35°C (32°F to 95°F) and warns that excessive internal temperature may reduce performance and connectivity or cause the device to power down. Those limits apply to the named Google device family, not to all routers. Google Nest Wifi safety and regulatory information has the product-specific details.

The room may simply have weak coverage

Wi-Fi may be weak in a room because of distance, walls, or the router’s placement, whether or not a heater is present. For a thermostat or other device that cannot be moved, Netatmo suggests moving its relay closer to the router, changing the thermostat installation arrangement, or adding a repeater. Netatmo’s heater-area Wi-Fi guidance addresses coverage, not heater-generated interference.

How to find the cause

  1. Compare with the heater off. Note when the connection problem occurs. If it is safe and practical, switch the heater off temporarily and compare connection quality in the same location. A change is a clue to investigate, not conclusive evidence of causation.
  2. Move the client and router. Test the phone, computer, thermostat relay, or other device a short distance away. Keep the router away from direct heat, with open space around it for ventilation.
  3. Look for obstacles. Check whether the signal path runs through or alongside the heater, a water-filled radiator, metal, a mirror, a cabinet, or a dense wall. Try another position with fewer obstacles.
  4. Test other electronics one at a time. Nearby Wi-Fi networks, cordless phones, Bluetooth devices, baby monitors, microwaves, and other electronics are worth checking. Google recommends moving, unplugging, or disabling suspected devices individually and retesting.
  5. Compare Wi-Fi bands or channels if available. If both the router and client support them, try 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz and see whether automatic channel selection or a less congested channel improves the connection. Apple describes band and channel choices as possible ways to manage interference; available controls vary by equipment.
  6. Address coverage only if tests point to coverage. If the room remains weak after checking placement and obstacles, consider a compatible repeater or extender positioned where it still receives a strong signal. A wired access point or a powerline-based connection paired with an access point may suit some homes. Google describes extenders and powerline adapters as possible coverage options; the best fit depends on your router, client, wiring, and layout.

Choose a fix that matches the symptom

What your test suggests What to try What it will not solve
Router is close to the heater or feels unusually hot; performance changes as the router heats Move it away from the heat source, improve ventilation, and check the model’s operating instructions. A coverage dead zone elsewhere in the home.
Signal improves when the router or client moves around a metal object, water-filled system, or dense wall Reposition the router or client to reduce obstacles along the signal path. Interference from a different electronic device.
Disabling or moving another electronic device improves the connection Keep that device farther from the router or client, or adjust its placement or use where practical. Weak coverage caused by distance or building materials.
The heater room remains weak, but connection is reliable nearer the router Improve coverage with a compatible repeater or extender, or consider a wired access point or powerline-based route. Router overheating or an unrelated source of radio interference.

An extender rebroadcasts the router’s signal, so placement matters: it needs to receive a usable signal before it can extend coverage. Neither the general guidance nor the thermostat maker’s advice establishes one model as universally compatible or effective.
