You can remove a Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter device instance in Device Manager, but there is no established, universally supported way to stop Windows from recreating it. If you are troubleshooting dropped Wi-Fi or a VPN problem, address that connection issue separately: this virtual adapter is not the same as your computer’s physical Wi-Fi adapter.
What removing the adapter does—and does not do
The Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter is a virtual network interface, distinct from the physical Wi-Fi adapter that connects your computer to a wireless network. Microsoft-hosted community answers associate the virtual adapter with features such as mobile hotspot and wireless projection (Miracast), but those explanations are community guidance rather than a formal Microsoft support procedure. See the Microsoft Q&A explanation.
Removing its current entry in Device Manager may clear that instance, but users report that it returns after a restart. Those reports do not establish exactly when Windows recreates it or prove that the adapter caused a separate network fault. If you use hotspot or wireless projection, disabling related functionality may affect those features.
Remove or disable the listed device
If your only goal is to clear the current device entry, you can try removing it in Device Manager. The exact display name or category can vary by Windows version and driver.

- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and look for Microsoft Wi-Fi Direct Virtual Adapter (the number or suffix may differ).
- Right-click the entry. Choose Disable device to turn off that instance, or Uninstall device to remove it. If Windows offers a checkbox to remove driver software, do not select it unless you know that option applies to a driver you intend to remove.
- Restart Windows and check Device Manager again.
This is not a proven permanent-removal procedure. Microsoft Q&A users report that the adapter can reappear after reboot, and behavior may depend on Windows, hardware, drivers, and enabled features. One Microsoft Q&A thread discusses repeated reappearance; another thread contains similar user reports. Neither establishes a universal fix.
If you are considering the registry workaround
A Microsoft Q&A answer suggests deleting a hosted-network settings key, then restarting and checking the hosted-network state. This is a community workaround—not an official Microsoft Support procedure—and the available guidance does not verify that it is appropriate for every Windows release or that it prevents the virtual adapter from returning.

- Supports Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8, 7, XP/ Mac OS X 10.9-10.14
The answerer, XinGuo-MSFT, advises backing up the registry or creating a system restore point before making the change. If you cannot confidently identify and restore the affected settings, do not proceed. The thread gives this path: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetservicesWlansvcParametersHostedNetworkSettings. It then suggests restarting and running netsh wlan show hostednetwork in Command Prompt to see whether the state is reported as “Not configured.” That result concerns hosted-network configuration; it does not prove that the adapter has been permanently removed or that a physical Wi-Fi issue is fixed. Read the full Q&A answer before considering the workaround.

If Wi-Fi or VPN connectivity is the real problem
Do not assume the virtual adapter caused a disconnection just because the problem began around the same time it appeared. Microsoft’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance addresses connection problems and the physical network adapter separately. Follow its steps for your symptom before removing virtual devices; the article includes uninstalling the physical adapter driver and restarting as a later troubleshooting step. If you take that step, have the computer manufacturer’s Wi-Fi driver available in case Windows does not restore the right driver automatically.

Microsoft also warns that a network reset can require reinstalling or reconfiguring networking software, including VPN clients and Hyper-V virtual switches. Treat that as a later, broader troubleshooting option rather than a way to remove this virtual adapter. Follow Microsoft’s Wi-Fi connection troubleshooting guide and choose steps that match your Windows version and symptoms.
