Your device can be connected to Wi-Fi and still have no internet because the wireless link to your router and the router’s connection to your internet provider are separate. Start by checking whether other devices on the same network can get online: that quickly shows whether to focus on one device or the shared network.
Why does my Wi-Fi have no internet?
Wi-Fi connects your phone, computer, or other device to a local network, usually through a router. Internet access also depends on that network having a working connection through its modem or gateway to your provider. If that upstream connection is down, your device may still show that it is connected to Wi-Fi even though websites and apps cannot reach the internet. Microsoft describes this distinction, and Google notes that a provider outage can leave home Wi-Fi available without internet access.
First, find out whether the problem affects one device or all of them
- Connect another phone, tablet, or computer to the same Wi-Fi network and try opening a website.
- If the other device works, focus on the original device, its network settings, VPN or security software, or the specific app or site that fails.
- If multiple devices fail on the same Wi-Fi, check the router, modem, shared network, and internet service.
- If possible, connect the affected device to a different Wi-Fi network. If it also fails there, the device is a stronger suspect; if it works, investigate the home network.
This scope check is the most useful first branch: it helps avoid changing a device that is working correctly or replacing networking equipment before checking the service. Apple’s Wi-Fi troubleshooting guidance and Google’s connection troubleshooting both use comparisons across devices or networks to narrow the cause.

- Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on and airplane mode is off.
- Confirm the device joined the intended network, rather than a nearby network with a similar name.
- If other devices have internet on the same Wi-Fi, temporarily disconnect and reconnect the affected device to that network.
- Consider whether a VPN or security app, or a problem limited to one app or website, explains the failure.
On Windows, Microsoft also recommends checking that automatic IP addressing uses DHCP and that a DNS server is configured and reachable. Its instructions for renewing an IP address, resetting TCP/IP, and clearing the DNS cache are Windows-specific; do not treat those commands as universal fixes for phones, tablets, or other operating systems. - Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
- More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router
Check the router, modem, and cables
- Check that the router and modem or gateway have power and that their cables are firmly connected.
- Restart the networking equipment: unplug the router and cable modem, then reconnect them. Allow the devices time to start before testing again.
- Check whether the router is within range. If it offers more than one supported Wi-Fi band, try another band if available.
- Check for router firmware updates and confirm that the affected device is compatible with the network.
- If you are troubleshooting a Nest Wifi setup, Google specifically advises checking that the Ethernet cable is seated securely. Follow the setup guidance at Google Nest Wifi setup troubleshooting.
A restart and cable check are sensible before advanced resets or purchases. They do not, by themselves, establish whether the provider’s service is working.
Use Ethernet or another Wi-Fi device to isolate the fault
If you have an Ethernet cable and a device with an Ethernet port, connect that device directly to the router and test internet access. Microsoft says that when internet works over Ethernet but not over Wi-Fi, the problem is due to the Wi-Fi router. If the wired connection also has no internet, the fault may be farther upstream, such as the modem or provider connection. See Microsoft’s connection-isolation guidance.

- A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
- Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
- Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
- Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
- With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
You can also test another Wi-Fi device with cellular data turned off, so it does not silently use a mobile connection instead. If no device can reach the internet over Wi-Fi, Google recommends contacting your provider to ask about a local outage. Google’s connection troubleshooting guide covers this check.

When to contact your provider, device maker, or network administrator
- Contact your internet provider if multiple devices fail after you have checked power and cables and restarted the router and modem. Ask whether there is an outage or a problem with the service reaching your home.
- Contact the device maker if one device cannot connect to any Wi-Fi network. Apple recommends contacting Apple in that situation for an iPhone or iPad.
- Ask your school or work network administrator before resetting network settings on a managed network.
Network resets can have consequences. Apple warns that resetting network settings removes saved Wi-Fi networks and passwords as well as mobile, VPN, and APN settings. Treat that as a later troubleshooting step, not a first response. Details are in Apple’s Wi-Fi support guidance.

When should you replace the router?
Do not start by buying a router. First compare whether the issue affects one device or several, whether a wired connection works, and whether your provider reports an outage. Those checks can point toward a router problem, but a router purchase will not fix a service outage or a fault limited to one device. Consider replacement only after evidence points to router failure, incompatibility, or a limitation that affects the devices and coverage you need. Microsoft’s Ethernet test can help distinguish Wi-Fi trouble from a wider internet failure; Apple also advises checking the router as part of Wi-Fi troubleshooting.
