A stationary Wi-Fi camera can stay connected to a mesh node that is not the best choice because the camera—not the mesh system—usually decides when to roam. A new node may improve weak coverage, but it cannot guarantee that the camera will switch to it. First check which node serves the camera and compare signal quality at its installed location; distance alone does not tell you which node offers the better connection.

Why won’t my Wi-Fi camera connect to the closest mesh node?

Mesh nodes may share one network name, but the camera associates with a particular access point, identified by its BSSID. In ordinary Wi-Fi roaming, the client device measures available signals and decides whether and when to change access points. The mesh can help the client discover or consider another node, but it generally does not order the camera to move.

TP-Link describes the distinction directly in its Deco support FAQ: “Deco can only provide a roaming suggestion. Whether to roam or not depends on the client itself as it has its own roaming threshold as well, which is decided by its manufacturer.” A camera may therefore remain attached to its current node even when another one appears closer.

And closer is not always better. Walls, other obstructions, interference and indoor radio reflections can change the signal received at the camera. Cisco Meraki’s explanation of client roaming and connectivity decisions notes that clients consider signal information and may use implementation-specific thresholds; physical proximity alone does not determine the best access point.

What do 802.11k, 802.11v and 802.11r actually do?

These Wi-Fi features help with different parts of roaming. Their presence can make a transition more informed or faster, but none guarantees that a particular camera will leave its current node.

Feature What it helps with What it does not guarantee
802.11k Provides information about neighboring access points, which can reduce the time a client spends scanning. It does not make the client switch nodes.
802.11v Provides transition information or suggestions that help a client evaluate candidate access points. The client can delay or decline a suggested transition.
802.11r Fast BSS Transition helps compatible devices complete roaming authentication more quickly. It does not decide that a client should roam.

Apple’s Wi-Fi roaming deployment guide describes the roles of 802.11k and 802.11v, while Juniper Mist explains the differences among 802.11k, 802.11r and 802.11v. “Fast roaming” is not a command that forces a camera to change nodes.

Why adding a mesh node may not fix live-view stutter

An extra node can help if the camera’s problem is inadequate coverage and the node provides a better radio path at the camera’s location. It may not help if the camera is reluctant to roam, if the new node’s own wireless path back to the main node is poor, or if the interruption comes from another cause.

A roam or reauthentication can briefly interrupt real-time traffic. Juniper Mist notes that roaming can disrupt voice calls and real-time video in its RSSI and fast-roaming documentation. A brief pause can therefore be consistent with a roaming interruption, but it does not prove roaming caused it. Weak signal, interference, mesh backhaul, camera firmware, app behavior or another network issue may also affect live view.

Apple’s documented thresholds illustrate why one client’s behavior should not be assumed to apply to another. In its guide published September 25, 2024, Apple lists a roam trigger of –70 dBm for iPhone 5s or later and listed iPad, iPhone and Vision Pro classes; a candidate access point must be 8 dB stronger while the device is transmitting data or 12 dB stronger while it is idle. For listed Macs with Apple silicon or Intel processors, Apple lists a –75 dBm trigger and requires a candidate 12 dB stronger. These are Apple-specific behaviors, not general Wi-Fi thresholds or camera settings.

How to diagnose the camera before buying another node

  1. Identify the serving node. In the mesh app or router interface, look for the connected-device list and check which node serves the camera, if that information is exposed. Record the result while live view is behaving poorly.
  2. Compare signal at the camera location. Check the camera’s received signal and, where possible, the signal from candidate nodes at the installed location. A Wi-Fi analysis app or software can help inspect nearby signal; Linksys also describes using analyzer apps in its client connection FAQ. Do not judge the connection by node distance alone.
  3. Check the radio path and interference. Consider walls and other obstructions, nearby sources of interference and the camera’s placement. If the serving or candidate node uses wireless backhaul, check whether that node has a healthy path to the main node; a strong camera-to-node connection does not by itself establish that the node’s backhaul is healthy.
  4. Reconnect the camera as a diagnostic. Reconnect or power-cycle it, then check which node it selects and whether live view improves. A client may choose a different node after reconnecting, but that does not guarantee a lasting change.
  5. Check for model-specific controls. Look in the mesh system’s documentation or app for preferred-node or stationary-device settings. TP-Link says some Deco models support preferred-node connections and, in supported cases, suggests disabling Mesh Technology for stationary clients. Availability and labels depend on the model.
  6. Test live view after each change. Change one thing at a time and observe whether the result is a short interruption during a transition, persistently poor signal, or an app or stream failure that continues regardless of node.

When is Ethernet a better option?

If the camera has an Ethernet port and a cable can reach it, a wired connection can avoid the camera’s Wi-Fi node-selection problem. Check the device specifications and installation route first; Ethernet is not an option for a camera without a compatible port or a workable cable path. If neither condition is met, focus on signal and node behavior rather than assuming another mesh node will solve the issue.
