The promised all-purpose Wi-Fi-blocking paint never became an established household product in the sources available: the 2009 study behind the headline measured a specialized material absorbing millimeter waves, not painted walls blocking ordinary home Wi-Fi. Conductive coatings and paints marketed for radio-frequency (RF) shielding do exist, but they are distinct products with specific applications and test conditions. The fate of the startup behind a 2004 product announcement remains unclear.
Where the Wi-Fi-blocking-paint story came from
The memorable label grew out of several different developments that are easy to conflate: laboratory research on a magnetic nanomaterial, a startup’s reported plan to sell paint, industrial electromagnetic-interference coatings, and today’s products marketed for RF or EMF shielding. They are not proof of one continuous consumer product line.
The 2009 study measured a material, not a finished room
In a 2009 paper, Asuka Namai and colleagues studied aluminum-substituted epsilon-iron-oxide nanomagnets. Using terahertz time-domain spectroscopy at room temperature, they measured absorption peaks at 112, 125, 145, 162, 172, and 182 GHz for different compositions. Those are millimeter-wave frequencies; the paper did not demonstrate a household wall-paint product or test whether it blocks ordinary consumer Wi-Fi in an installed room. The paper’s abstract and bibliographic record report the measurements.

A 2004 sales plan is not proof a product reached stores
A 2026 retrospective says Silicon Valley startup Force Field Wireless was reported in 2004 as preparing to sell Wi-Fi-blocking paint for $69 per gallon. That figure describes a reported planned price, not evidence of a sustained retail product. The available account does not establish whether the company launched the paint, discontinued it, or continued under another name. The retrospective is secondary reporting and does not resolve the company’s later history.

Security-oriented coating claims
In 2010, EM-SEC Technologies announced that it had tested its coating around a painted sensitive compartmented information facility and said the coating restricted airborne RF signals. Government Technology reproduced the company-originated announcement; it is evidence of what the company reported, not independent confirmation that the coating works broadly in other buildings or applications. Industrial shielding finishes
Also in 2010, Sherwin-Williams announced an agreement to distribute Spraylat EMI/RFI shielding finishes to electronics-industry original-equipment manufacturers and product finishing shops. That points to an industrial market for shielding coatings, not a widely sold decorative paint for homeowners. The announcement describes the distribution agreement.

What shielding paint can and cannot tell you today
Products are now marketed as RF shielding paint, EMF shielding paint, or conductive paint. Their intended uses and supporting evidence vary: a coating for a building surface is not automatically suitable for an electronics enclosure, every frequency, or a security-sensitive facility. Performance in a wall also depends on details such as the substrate, coating continuity and thickness, openings, and any grounding or bonding requirements.

For example, YSHIELD describes coatings for single walls, rooms, buildings, and industrial applications, and says it supplies screening-attenuation reports up to 40 GHz. MG Chemicals describes 841WB as a one-part, water-based conductive coating containing nickel flake, intended for wood and drywall as well as some electronics applications. The manufacturer says it can be applied by spray, brush, or roller. Its page lists some package sizes as discontinued while presenting other purchase options, so check current availability and instructions before choosing it. See the 841WB product information.
How to interpret published attenuation numbers
Decibels (dB) describe attenuation under specified conditions; they are not a universal rating for every wall coated with the same product. A VDB EMC Guides report labelled as a 2022 update compared 18 shielding paints and additives. Under its stated test method and application amount, it reported 43 dB at 1 GHz for YSHIELD MAX54. The report applied the same amount to test panels because manufacturers’ stated coverage yields differed. The same report found that applying two coats of standard wall paint reduced attenuation at 1 GHz by 4 dB for one tested product and 9 dB for another. These observations apply to those products and the report’s test conditions; they should not be generalized to every shielding coating or topcoat.

If your goal is to reduce RF transmission through a particular wall, compare products only on evidence that matches your application. Check:

- Frequency and test method: Find the measured frequency range and the setup used to obtain attenuation figures.
- Application details: Confirm the substrate, amount or thickness, and number of coats associated with the reported result.
- Grounding or bonding: Follow the product-specific instructions; do not assume all conductive coatings are installed or grounded the same way.
- Openings and continuity: Doors, windows, outlets, seams, and uncoated areas can matter to the overall barrier.
- Current formulation and availability: Verify present specifications, package options, and instructions with the manufacturer.
- Purpose: Distinguish a building-surface coating from one intended for an electronics enclosure or a tested security installation.
A coating is not a substitute for Wi-Fi encryption, and the available product information does not establish that applying paint alone creates a secure facility. Nor do these sources establish a health benefit from shielding paint.
