No. Wi-Fi 6 and 6G refer to different kinds of wireless technology. Wi-Fi 6 is a generation of Wi-Fi based on the IEEE 802.11ax standard; 6G is the expected next generation of mobile telecommunications, which the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) calls IMT-2030. The “6” is a generation number in each name, not a sign that the technologies are the same.
What Wi-Fi 6 and 6G each refer to
| Term | Technology family | What the name identifies | Practical clarification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi 6 | Wi-Fi, used for wireless local networking | A Wi-Fi generation based on IEEE 802.11ax | The name alone does not mean the device supports 6 GHz. |
| Wi-Fi 6E | Wi-Fi, used for wireless local networking | Wi-Fi 6 devices capable of operating in the 6 GHz band | Support depends on device specifications and local rules for 6 GHz use. |
| 6G / IMT-2030 | International Mobile Telecommunications, or cellular | The ITU framework for the next mobile generation | Its standards and deployment are developing; it is not a synonym for Wi-Fi 6. |
Wi-Fi Alliance introduced “Wi-Fi 6” in 2018 as the industry designation for products and networks based on 802.11ax (Wi-Fi Alliance announcement). The ITU uses “IMT-2030” as the technical reference for the next generation of International Mobile Telecommunications, commonly called 6G (ITU announcement).
Does Wi-Fi 6 mean 6 GHz?
No. “Wi-Fi 6” names a Wi-Fi generation; it does not promise that a router or device can use the 6 GHz frequency band. Wi-Fi Alliance introduced “Wi-Fi 6E” in 2020 for Wi-Fi 6 devices capable of operating in 6 GHz (Wi-Fi Alliance announcement).
Even a Wi-Fi 6E label does not guarantee 6 GHz access in every location or on every device. Check the specifications of both the router and the device that will connect to it, along with the rules in your country or region. The 2020 announcement described spectrum that might be made available by regulators around the world; it does not establish current local availability.
#1 Best Overall
- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What is known about 6G now?
In December 2023, the ITU announced IMT-2030 as the technical reference for the next generation of International Mobile Telecommunications. That announcement said companies and industry associations were expected to submit proposed radio interface technologies for ITU-R consideration in early 2027. This is a dated standards-development milestone, not a guaranteed consumer launch date or evidence that a finalized 6G service is already deployed.
How Wi-Fi and cellular fit together
Wi-Fi and cellular are distinct technologies, but they can complement one another. The Wireless Broadband Alliance describes Wi-Fi as common indoors and calls for better coordination between Wi-Fi and cellular networks (Wireless Broadband Alliance). That is a position about cooperation between the technologies, not a guarantee about the performance or availability of any particular network.
