No—you don’t need to replace working Wi-Fi equipment just because Wi-Fi 6 is newer. Consider a Wi-Fi 6 router if your current router needs replacing, compatible devices are competing for airtime, or you need features specific to the standard. If your network is reliable and meets your household’s needs, there is no universal requirement to upgrade.

What Wi-Fi 6 changes

Wi-Fi 6 is the name for 802.11ax. It operates on the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and adds ways for compatible routers and devices to coordinate wireless airtime. Intel describes technologies including OFDMA and Target Wake Time in its Wi-Fi 6 explainer. OFDMA lets a router divide channel resources among multiple clients; Target Wake Time coordinates when supported devices wake to communicate and when they can sleep. Wi-Fi Alliance certification records also list OFDMA, MU-MIMO, and Target Wake Time among features for certified Wi-Fi 6 Release 2 devices (certificate WFA133396).

These features concern how supported equipment can share or schedule airtime; they do not guarantee a particular speed increase for every device or home. Implementation and support vary by router and client. Actual performance also depends on the client hardware, distance, radio conditions, configuration, and internet service. A faster Wi-Fi connection inside the home does not increase the speed supplied by your internet plan.

When to keep your current Wi-Fi equipment

Keep your router if it is reliable, covers the home adequately, serves your current internet plan, and you are not experiencing congestion or a compatibility problem. Older devices can continue to connect to a Wi-Fi 6 router using the Wi-Fi modes they support, but they do not become Wi-Fi 6 clients. Cisco’s Catalyst 9100 Wi-Fi 6/6E FAQ describes support for mandatory earlier Wi-Fi modes as the basis for backward compatibility.

TP-Link AX1800 WiFi 6 Router (Archer AX21 V5)
  • DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
  • AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

When a Wi-Fi 6 router makes sense

  • Your router is due for replacement: Wi-Fi 6 is a reasonable standard to consider for a new router, especially if your household already has Wi-Fi 6 clients.
  • Many devices are active at once: Wi-Fi 6’s airtime-efficiency features may be useful when multiple compatible devices share the network. They are not a promise that every device will be faster.
  • You need a Wi-Fi 6 client feature: Check that both the router and the device you want to connect support the feature; a router upgrade alone does not upgrade a phone or computer’s wireless hardware.

When comparing routers, check supported standards and bands against your actual devices, home coverage needs, wired ports, and configuration requirements. Look for credible independent testing of the specific router model rather than relying on headline theoretical speed figures.

Wi-Fi 6 is not Wi-Fi 6E

Wi-Fi 6E adds operation in the 6 GHz band; ordinary Wi-Fi 6 uses 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Intel’s 6 GHz support guide distinguishes Wi-Fi 6 from Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7 products that can access that band. To use 6 GHz, both the router and client need compatible Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 support, and 6 GHz availability depends on local regulations. Check exact product specifications before buying. Older devices cannot use 6 GHz, though a multiband Wi-Fi 6E router can also serve them on supported 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz bands, as Cisco explains in its FAQ.

Could a Wi-Fi 6 adapter be enough?

If you want to upgrade one computer, a Wi-Fi 6 adapter may be an alternative to replacing the router—but it only helps if the router also supports Wi-Fi 6. Verify the adapter’s interface, operating-system support, antenna arrangement, and compatibility with your exact computer model. Adapter modules are not universally interchangeable: Intel notes that AX201 uses a proprietary interface and is limited to select Intel platforms, unlike the AX200 (Intel’s AX201 and AX200 compatibility explanation). Intel’s Wi-Fi 6 product catalog lists client hardware, but confirm the requirements for the particular product and computer before purchase.

A practical upgrade decision

  1. Check whether your router needs replacing. If the network is reliable and meets your coverage and internet needs, there is no need to upgrade solely for a newer Wi-Fi label.
  2. Check your client devices. Look up the Wi-Fi standard supported by the phones, computers, and other devices you expect to benefit. Older devices can connect to a compatible Wi-Fi 6 router, but retain their own supported capabilities.
  3. Identify the reason for the change. A router replacement, active-device congestion, or a specific client requirement can justify considering Wi-Fi 6. If your goal is 6 GHz, compare Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 options instead and verify support at both ends.
  4. Check exact compatibility and needs. For a router, confirm bands, coverage, ports, and configuration features. For a PC adapter, confirm the exact system and interface support.
