Usually, no. Wi‑Fi 6 (also called 802.11ax) is a feature of a router or access point, not a requirement for the modem that connects your home to the internet. If your existing modem is supported by your provider and handles your plan, you can generally keep it and upgrade the router. The key exception is a combined modem-router gateway: its built-in Wi‑Fi may be the part you need to replace or work around.
What needs Wi‑Fi 6: the modem or the router?
A modem or provider terminal brings the internet connection into your home. A router creates the local network and sends data between that connection and your devices, over Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. A gateway combines modem and router functions in one device. Google Nest Help describes a modem as the device that sends information between the outside network and your home: What is a modem?
Wi‑Fi 6 belongs to the wireless side of the network. To use it, you need a Wi‑Fi 6-capable router or access point and client devices—such as phones, computers, and tablets—that support Wi‑Fi 6. A device with an older Wi‑Fi generation can still connect, but it will not use Wi‑Fi 6 features.

People sometimes ask whether their “modem supports Wi‑Fi 6.” That usually means they have a gateway with Wi‑Fi built in. In that case, the modem function may be fine while the gateway’s wireless function is outdated.

Can you keep your existing modem?
Usually, yes, if you have a separate modem and router. Connect a Wi‑Fi 6 router to the modem’s Ethernet port, then use the new router for your home network. Keep the modem if your provider supports its exact model for your service and it can handle your subscribed plan.
If you have a gateway, you may be able to add a Wi‑Fi 6 router without replacing the gateway. Check whether the gateway supports bridge mode or lets you disable its built-in Wi‑Fi. When a second router is connected, setup may need adjustment to make the new router primary and avoid double NAT. If built-in Wi‑Fi cannot be disabled, using a different network name for the new router can help prevent confusion between the two networks. Options and labels vary by provider and model; bridge mode is not available on every gateway. See Google Nest Help’s guidance on connecting a router to a modem-router gateway.

How your internet service changes the equipment decision
Cable internet
A cable subscriber may have a standalone cable modem, a cable gateway, or provider-supplied equipment. You can usually retain a compatible standalone modem and add a Wi‑Fi 6 router. If replacing the modem or gateway, check the provider’s approved equipment list and confirm support for your plan and any bundled services, especially phone service.
Some products combine a DOCSIS cable modem and Wi‑Fi 6 router. For example, the NETGEAR CAX80 product page describes a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem-router with Wi‑Fi 6 and states that its intended providers include Xfinity, Spectrum, and Cox in the US. The page also excludes fiber and cable-bundled voice services. These are product-specific limits, not a general compatibility guarantee; check your own provider, plan, region, and voice requirements before buying.

- COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.
Fiber internet
Fiber service commonly uses an ONT or Fiber Jack as the provider-facing terminal, with a router connected behind it. The provider’s network design determines whether that terminal can be replaced or must remain in place. Do not assume a cable modem—or a cable modem-router combo—can replace fiber equipment.
Satellite or other provider terminals
Satellite service uses a provider terminal as part of the connection. It may also include routing or Wi‑Fi, depending on the setup. The terminal is not automatically a replaceable modem; ask the provider how to connect a separate router and whether its built-in Wi‑Fi can be disabled. NETGEAR’s provider compatibility guidance distinguishes cable modems, fiber ONTs or Fiber Jacks, and satellite terminals, and says the provider-facing equipment must be compatible with the ISP.

Choose the right upgrade path
| What you have | Practical path | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Separate modem and router | Keep the modem and replace the router with a Wi‑Fi 6 model. | Confirm the modem remains supported for your provider and plan; check that the devices you want to benefit from Wi‑Fi 6 support it. |
| Gateway with built-in Wi‑Fi | Add a Wi‑Fi 6 router if the gateway can be configured appropriately, or replace the gateway with an approved Wi‑Fi 6 model. | Ask about bridge mode, disabling gateway Wi‑Fi, double NAT, and the exact gateway’s provider compatibility. |
| Fiber ONT/Fiber Jack or satellite terminal | Usually connect a Wi‑Fi 6 router behind the provider terminal, if the provider’s setup permits it. | Confirm the provider’s connection method and whether its terminal must stay in place. |
| Replacing a cable gateway | Consider an approved Wi‑Fi 6 DOCSIS modem-router combo or separate modem and router. | Verify the precise model, plan, region, and bundled voice support. A DOCSIS device is for cable service, not fiber or satellite. |
When comparing options, consider provider approval, plan support, the Wi‑Fi capabilities of your important client devices, coverage needs, wired ports, and the cost of buying equipment versus any provider rental. If you keep a gateway and add a router, also factor in the configuration needed to avoid competing Wi‑Fi networks or double NAT.
Will Wi‑Fi 6 make your internet faster?
It does not increase the speed tier you buy from your internet provider. A Wi‑Fi 6 router may remove a wireless bottleneck for compatible devices, but real-world throughput also depends on your broadband plan, router, client device, distance, interference, network traffic, and building materials. NETGEAR notes that throughput and coverage vary with traffic and construction, and that compatible AX clients are needed for the advertised wireless behavior on its CAX80 product page. A router upgrade alone cannot guarantee a particular speed or eliminate dead zones.

Check compatibility before replacing provider-facing equipment
- Identify your equipment. Check whether you have a separate modem and router, a combined gateway, or a provider terminal such as an ONT or satellite device.
- Confirm your service type. Determine whether the connection is cable, fiber, satellite, or another provider-specific setup. Equipment for one type may not work with another.
- Check the exact model with your provider. For a modem or gateway purchase, verify the current approved-equipment list, your service plan, and support for bundled services such as voice. Compatibility can vary by provider, service, and region.
- Choose whether to keep or replace the gateway. If adding a router, ask whether bridge mode or Wi‑Fi disablement is supported and how to avoid double NAT. If replacing the gateway, confirm the new device is approved.
- Check the clients and coverage you care about. Confirm that the relevant devices support Wi‑Fi 6, and choose router placement and coverage features based on your home rather than assuming the Wi‑Fi generation alone fixes weak signal.
