A good download and upload result does not guarantee a responsive connection during a Zoom call. If latency jumps while your network is busy, excessive queueing—often called bufferbloat—could be contributing to the lag. Test latency under load before changing router settings; the result can point to a bottleneck, but it cannot prove bufferbloat is the cause of every call problem.
Why a fast speed test can still feel slow
Most speed tests emphasize throughput: how much data your connection can transfer over time. Interactive calls also depend on responsiveness. When a router or other network device buffers too much data, packets wait in a queue and latency rises, even if the connection can still deliver a high download or upload rate.
Queues can form wherever a faster link feeds a slower one, including at the router’s connection to the internet or on a Wi-Fi interface. Bufferbloat.net describes the symptom this way: “Bufferbloat is high latency (or lag) that occurs when there’s other traffic on your network.” (Bufferbloat.net FAQs; technical overview)
That makes bufferbloat a plausible explanation when calls worsen during uploads, downloads, backups, or other busy network activity. It is not a diagnosis by itself: Wi-Fi interference, the ISP connection, the remote meeting, or other factors can also affect call quality. The sources cited here are technical guidance from Bufferbloat.net, not Zoom requirements documentation; they do not establish a Zoom-specific latency, jitter, or bandwidth threshold.

How to check whether latency rises under load
Use a loaded-latency test
Bufferbloat.net points readers to tests that report latency during uploads and downloads, rather than only showing idle latency and throughput. Its test page says latency above about 50 ms or a grade below B is a reason to consult its mitigation recommendations. Those are the project’s guidance, not universal limits; results depend on the test and conditions. (Tests for Bufferbloat)
Or compare ping while a speed test runs
- Start a continuous ping to a stable host you can normally reach. For example, on many systems,
ping 1.1.1.1sends repeated requests; stop it with Ctrl+C. A ping target can itself have variable response times, so treat this as a practical check, not a definitive measurement. - Run a speed test that loads the connection with an upload and download.
- Watch whether ping times rise during either transfer, then compare them with the readings before the test.
A noticeable jump suggests that a loaded bottleneck may be adding delay, which makes bufferbloat worth investigating. It does not establish that the same bottleneck caused a particular Zoom call to lag. Bufferbloat.net’s FAQ says an increase under load of less than 15–25 ms indicates latency is well under control; interpret this as the project’s undated guidance, not a Zoom limit or regulatory standard. What to try if latency jumps
Check for SQM on your existing router
Look in the router’s administration interface or documentation for Smart Queue Management (SQM). Menu names vary by manufacturer and firmware, so there is no reliable universal UI path. SQM controls queueing; its shaping rates need to be tuned to the connection rather than copied as a one-size-fits-all percentage or speed.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Measure your connection’s upload and download behavior with SQM off, preferably more than once if rates fluctuate.
- Enable SQM if your router supports it, and configure shaping for both directions where the interface allows.
- Repeat the same loaded-latency test. If delay remains high, adjust the shaping rates and test again; the rates must be low enough to control the actual bottleneck while retaining useful throughput.
Bufferbloat.net’s tuning walkthrough reports one illustrative result: after tuning, latency rose about 10 ms over a 65 ms baseline, compared with about 1.2 seconds in the earlier configuration. That is one reported test, not a performance guarantee or expected result for other connections. (Getting SQM Running Right)

Understand what queue-management options do
CAKE and FQ-CoDel are queue-management options used in SQM. CAKE includes flow isolation and traffic classes, but that does not mean a video call automatically receives special priority; much traffic can remain in a default class. Priority markings are not a substitute for controlling queue length. (CAKE guidance)
Account for changing connection speeds
If your available connection rate varies substantially, fixed shaping settings can stop matching the bottleneck. Bufferbloat.net describes cake-autorate as an option that adjusts CAKE parameters in response to changing link conditions. Recheck loaded latency as conditions change rather than assuming a setting that worked once will remain optimal. (CAKE guidance; testing guidance)

When a different router may help
Consider additional hardware only after checking whether the current router can run useful SQM and whether the suspected bottleneck is one that router can control. A replacement or additional router will not necessarily fix queueing on ISP equipment outside your control or delay caused on Wi-Fi.
| What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Can the existing router enable SQM? | If it can, try tuning it before buying hardware. |
| Does the candidate device support CAKE or FQ-CoDel and shaping for the relevant directions? | Queue-management support and control of both directions matter more than a speed-test headline alone. |
| Is the connection stable or variable-speed? | Fixed shaping may need repeated tuning; changing rates may call for adaptive control. |
| Is the bottleneck within the router’s control? | Router SQM cannot directly control every source of delay, including some ISP-side or Wi-Fi conditions. |
If the current router lacks useful SQM support, Bufferbloat.net lists an SQM-capable router as one possible remedy and identifies OpenWrt-compatible hardware, including OpenWrt One, as an option. Its page says OpenWrt One was released in November 2024 and incorporates CAKE/FQ-CoDel; the page mentions availability through AliExpress in many countries. Availability and compatibility can change, so verify current support for the exact hardware and firmware before choosing a device. (What can I do about Bufferbloat?)

If the test does not show a latency jump
A low loaded-latency result makes bufferbloat less evident in that test, but does not explain every call issue. Check whether the problem follows one Wi-Fi location or device, or occurs only at particular times; those clues can help distinguish local wireless conditions from a busy internet connection. Test again while the symptoms occur, because a test at a different time may not capture the conditions that affected the call.
Do not use a single speed-test score to rule out responsiveness problems, or a single ping spike to declare bufferbloat proven. The useful comparison is latency at rest versus latency while the connection is busy, followed by a retest after any queue-management change.
