YouTube may recommend political videos because its system personalizes suggestions from your viewing and search behavior, feedback, subscriptions, and the behavior of viewers with similar interests. For news and politics, YouTube also says it gives additional recommendation weight to videos it considers authoritative. That does not mean every political video is promoted, that politics is automatically suppressed, or that YouTube has published a complete formula for any one recommendation.
What YouTube recommendations are designed to do
YouTube describes recommendations as a personalized service intended to help each viewer find videos they are likely to want and to maximize long-term satisfaction. The company says recommendations combine three broad elements: information about the viewer, how videos perform with viewers, and outside conditions that change demand over time.
The system is not one identical list for everyone. Two people can watch the same video and receive different political suggestions afterward because their histories, searches, subscriptions, feedback, and patterns of interest differ. Recommendations can also change when a viewer moves between YouTube surfaces, because each surface uses different signals more heavily.

Why political videos can appear in your recommendations
Your recent viewing creates a context
Watching a political interview, debate, policy explainer, election livestream, or news report can make related subjects more relevant to the system. YouTube says the video currently being watched is the main signal for an Up next suggestion. A single viewing therefore can lead to more videos on the same topic, from the same format, or watched by a similar audience.
Your searches and subscriptions add longer-term evidence
Search history and subscriptions can indicate continuing interest rather than a one-time click. Likes, dislikes, and explicit choices such as Not interested or Don’t recommend channel provide additional feedback. YouTube also says it looks at the themes, topics, formats, and videos enjoyed by viewers with similar habits. Political recommendations can therefore appear even when you did not search for a particular politician: the system may connect your viewing pattern with an audience that watches political content.

YouTube says it considers whether people choose to watch a recommended video, ignore it, or mark it as not interesting. After the click, it looks at signals including how long viewers stay, average view duration, average percentage viewed, likes, and responses to post-watch satisfaction surveys. These signals describe how viewers respond in aggregate; none guarantees that a particular video will be shown to you or anyone else.
Which signals matter on each YouTube surface
YouTube says the relative importance of a signal depends on where a recommendation appears. The two clearest differences are between Home and Up next.

This distinction explains why a video can appear in Up next after one political clip but not dominate your Home page. It also explains why changing your watch history may have a stronger effect on Home than on a recommendation generated immediately from the video on screen.
What additional treatment applies to politics and news
YouTube says it seeks authoritative videos
YouTube says it takes an additional step for news, politics, medical information, and scientific information: it recommends authoritative videos. In its own explanation, the company says human evaluators trained with public guidelines assess information quality at the channel and video level.
YouTube’s stated criteria include the speaker’s or channel’s expertise and reputation, the video’s main topic, and whether the video delivers on its promise or achieves its stated goal. YouTube says videos judged more authoritative receive more promotion in recommendations.

Authority is not an automatic political preference
This description does not say that every political video is promoted. It also does not say that all political content is suppressed, or that a political viewpoint receives a fixed advantage because of its category. The published explanation combines personalized behavior signals and video performance with an additional authority treatment for certain topics. It is not a transparent, fixed political-content ranking rule.
An authority assessment should not be read as a guarantee that every statement in a video is correct, nor as an endorsement of a party, candidate, or policy. It is YouTube’s description of a quality-oriented recommendation process, not an independently audited accuracy score.
Why one political video can lead to many more
Viewer response can expand or reduce reach
If viewers commonly choose a political video, continue watching it, and report satisfaction, those responses can support broader recommendation. If they ignore it quickly or select Not interested, that feedback can work in the opposite direction for similar viewers. YouTube says these are aggregate signals, so a high average view duration does not guarantee distribution and a low one does not prove that a video will disappear.
Interest, competition, and seasonality change the supply
YouTube also identifies topic interest, competition from other videos a viewer might watch, and seasonal changes as factors affecting impressions. Political coverage often has sharp cycles: an election, court ruling, legislative vote, debate, or breaking event can increase the number of new videos competing for attention. A temporary increase in recommendations may therefore reflect both your behavior and a larger increase in audience demand.
The system uses a large set of signals
YouTube describes its system as using “over 80 billion pieces of information” as signals. That is YouTube’s own figure for the signal corpus in its explanation; it is not a count of political recommendations, a published weighting table, or an independently audited measurement. The figure illustrates why a single visible action rarely explains an individual recommendation by itself.

How to reduce political recommendations
You can tune recommendations with the controls YouTube provides. The labels and placement can vary slightly between the mobile app, desktop site, and connected-TV app, but the actions are the same.
- Use Not interested on an unwanted video. Open the three-dot menu beside the thumbnail or video, choose Not interested, and select a reason if YouTube asks for one. This tells the system that this recommendation is a poor fit for you.
- Block recommendations from a particular channel. Open the same menu and choose Don’t recommend channel when that option is offered. This is more targeted than rejecting one video because it applies to future recommendations from that channel.
- Remove or pause watch history when your history is driving the pattern. Open your account’s YouTube history controls, review the watch-history setting, and use the pause or delete option provided there. Turning history off reduces history-based personalization; deleting history removes recorded viewing signals that would otherwise be used later.
- Review search history as well. Searches can influence recommendations and other YouTube experiences. Delete searches that no longer represent your interests, or pause search-history recording if you do not want new searches used for personalization.
- Clear earlier feedback if you changed your mind. YouTube provides a way to clear saved Not interested and similar recommendation feedback in the account activity controls. Clearing it removes that particular feedback signal; it does not create a permanent block on political topics.
These controls tune or reduce history-based personalization. YouTube does not promise that one choice removes every related subject or video from every surface, so a political recommendation can still appear because of the current video, wider topic interest, competition, or other signals.
Choose the least disruptive control

What happens when you turn off or delete history
Watch and search history influence future recommendations and other YouTube experiences. If you turn off watch history and have no significant prior history, YouTube says your Home page may show only the search bar and navigation instead of a normal set of video recommendations.
That result is different from a topic-specific filter. Pausing history does not tell YouTube that politics is unwanted; it limits one source of personalization. Deleting old history can remove the political viewing pattern that was feeding Home, but it does not erase the current video context used for Up next or guarantee that news and politics will never be suggested.
Before deleting history, consider whether you rely on personalized suggestions for other subjects. The same history can help YouTube suggest music, tutorials, local-interest videos, or continuing episodes. A targeted feedback control is usually less disruptive than a full reset.

Common misunderstandings about political recommendations
- “YouTube recommended it, so YouTube endorses it.” A recommendation is an output of a personalized system, not a statement of agreement with the video’s politics.
- “One click caused the entire feed.” A recent video can influence Up next, but YouTube describes many signals, including history, searches, feedback, similar-viewer patterns, performance, topic interest, competition, and seasonality.
- “Disliking one video blocks politics.” A dislike or Not interested action is feedback about a recommendation; it is not a universal subject filter.
- “Authoritative means officially approved or guaranteed true.” YouTube describes evaluator judgments about expertise, reputation, topic, and fulfillment of a video’s promise. It does not publish a guarantee that every claim in an authoritative video is correct.
- “The public explanation reveals the exact ranking formula.” YouTube publishes signal categories and goals, not source code, complete weights, or a case-by-case explanation for a specific viewer’s recommendation.
Troubleshooting persistent political recommendations
Political videos appear mainly in Up next
Look first at the video currently playing. Because YouTube identifies that video as the main Up next signal, move to a different subject and use Not interested on unwanted suggestions. Changing Home history alone may not immediately alter a queue generated from the current video.
Political videos dominate Home
Review watch history, search history, subscriptions, likes, dislikes, and saved recommendation feedback. Remove activity that no longer reflects your interests, then give YouTube new viewing signals by watching and positively rating the subjects you do want. The system needs replacement evidence; deleting old activity alone does not specify what should take its place.
The same outlet keeps returning after feedback
Use Don’t recommend channel rather than marking individual clips one at a time. If related channels still appear, remember that the control targets a channel, while topic interest and similar-viewer patterns can produce recommendations from other channels.
Recommendations change suddenly during a major event
Check whether the subject is receiving unusually high interest or competition. YouTube says seasonal and topic-level changes affect impressions, so a short-lived news event can change the recommendation environment even when your personal settings are unchanged.
What YouTube does not disclose
YouTube’s public Help explanations do not reveal the source code, exact ranking weights, or a complete explanation for why one named viewer received one particular political video. They also do not independently verify recommendation outcomes. The most accurate interpretation is therefore conditional: YouTube says it uses personalized behavior and satisfaction signals, adds an authority-oriented treatment for politics and news, and adjusts recommendations as viewer response and external demand change.
That framework explains why political videos can appear without assuming that YouTube is uniformly promoting or suppressing a political category. Use the narrowest feedback or history control that matches your goal, and treat any single recommendation as the result of multiple signals rather than proof of a hidden political preference.
