YouTube can look different when you open, close, or partly fold a phone because the screen’s shape and the app’s available layout change. The video itself also keeps its own aspect ratio: a vertical clip, square video, and widescreen video won’t necessarily fill the same area. On a Samsung Galaxy foldable, Flex mode can place the video above YouTube’s browsing or playback controls. Fullscreen zoom may make a video larger, but it crops the picture and cannot remove black bars built into the video.
Why does YouTube look different when I unfold my phone?
A foldable phone doesn’t give YouTube one fixed screen. Depending on the model and how you’re holding it, the app may be using a narrow cover display, a larger inner display, or a partly folded layout. Those display states have different proportions and usable areas, so the video window and surrounding interface can change when you switch between them.
There are three separate things that may appear to change at once:

A vertical or square video can occupy a taller player area in portrait, while a widescreen video uses a shorter one. The player therefore won’t always fill the display.
- The app layout: YouTube’s interface may rearrange to suit the available screen or a partly folded posture. The video can occupy one area while browsing or controls appear elsewhere.
- The display settings: On Galaxy devices, full-screen app settings and Flex mode compatibility can affect how an app uses the screen. The labels and available options vary by model and software version.
These effects can resemble a fault, but a video that appears smaller or sits differently after unfolding is not, by itself, evidence that YouTube is broken. The source video’s shape, the phone’s posture, and the app’s layout all matter.

Why doesn’t YouTube fill the whole foldable screen?
Filling the entire screen and preserving the original picture are not always compatible. A video has a shape, or aspect ratio, and the phone’s display has its own shape. When they differ, the player can preserve the complete frame and leave unused space around the image, or enlarge the picture until more of the display is covered and crop some of the frame.
YouTube’s Android player adapts to the video format rather than forcing every clip into an identical window. In portrait, square and vertical videos can get a taller player area; a widescreen video gets a shorter one. As a result, two videos may occupy noticeably different amounts of the same foldable screen even when the app and phone have not changed.
There is another source of apparent borders: black bars may already be part of the uploaded video. Those bars are pixels in the video image, not empty space added by the phone. Zooming the player cannot remove bars that were encoded into the picture. It may enlarge the whole image, bars included, or crop away part of the video.

Before changing a setting, check whether the space is outside the video image or part of the image itself. If the bars move or disappear when you change the player’s framing, they may be due to the difference between screen and video shape. If they remain within the picture, they may be embedded in the upload.
What happens in Flex mode?
On supported Galaxy foldables, Flex mode can give an app a layout designed for a partly folded phone. Samsung’s YouTube example is specifically a Galaxy Z Flip optimization announced with Google on April 22, 2020; it should not be treated as a description of every foldable or every current YouTube version.
In that example, the display split into two 4-inch screen areas. The video appeared in the upper area, with browsing or controls in the lower area. Square and vertical videos nearly filled the top area, while a 16:9 widescreen video was centered there. That arrangement illustrates two ideas: folding can change the app layout, and the video’s aspect ratio still affects how large it looks inside that layout.

Flex mode behavior depends on app compatibility, and Samsung says compatibility varies by app. A different Galaxy model, software version, YouTube release, or fold posture may not reproduce the 2020 Z Flip arrangement. Other foldable manufacturers may use different software and settings; this Galaxy example does not establish a universal foldable-phone behavior.
How to make a video larger or restore its original framing
On a Galaxy phone, Samsung documents a two-finger gesture for adjusting video framing in fullscreen:
- Open the video and switch to fullscreen.
- Spread two fingers apart on the video to zoom in. This enlarges the displayed picture and may crop its edges.
- Pinch two fingers together to restore the original framing.
The zoom gesture is a trade-off, not a way to add image content or guarantee edge-to-edge playback. It is unavailable when the video and display already have the same aspect ratio. It also cannot remove black bars that are part of the uploaded video. If preserving the entire frame matters more than filling the display, use the original framing.

Check Galaxy full-screen settings
If YouTube’s fullscreen presentation seems wrong rather than merely different, Samsung’s support guidance says to check whether YouTube is selected in the full-screen app settings. On supported Galaxy software, the path is:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display.
- Tap Full screen apps.
- Make sure YouTube is selected if it appears in the list and the option applies to your device.
These names and controls can differ by Galaxy model and software version. If the menu is absent or the selection does not change playback, don’t assume the phone has a fault: the setting may not apply to that model, or the app may handle the display another way.
Troubleshoot an unexpected YouTube layout
Use these checks to separate a normal change in framing from a persistent app or settings problem. The steps below are general Galaxy support measures, not guaranteed fixes for every foldable.

- Compare the same video in different screen states. Note whether the difference appears on the cover screen, the inner screen, or only when the phone is partly folded. A change tied to screen state points toward a layout or display-area difference.
- Check whether the video itself has a different shape. Compare a vertical, square, and widescreen clip. YouTube’s player adapts to video dimensions, so different-sized playback areas can be expected.
- Test fullscreen zoom. Spread two fingers on the video to enlarge it, then pinch to restore the original framing. If zoom is unavailable, the video and display may already share an aspect ratio.
- Check Galaxy’s full-screen app setting. Go to Settings → Display → Full screen apps and confirm YouTube is selected where that option is available.
- Update YouTube, then restart the phone if playback is abnormal. Samsung’s general troubleshooting guidance also includes clearing the app cache. These actions may help with abnormal app behavior, but they do not change the video’s aspect ratio or remove bars encoded in the upload.
If the problem persists, the appearance alone is not enough to identify its cause. A useful diagnosis needs the phone model, operating-system and YouTube app versions, whether the phone is open or folded, and a clear description of what looks wrong. A changed video window, cropping, controls in a new place, and an unusual thumbnail are different symptoms and may have different causes.
How to tell normal behavior from a problem

What the available examples do—and don’t—establish
Samsung and Google’s dated 2020 Galaxy Z Flip example shows one specific way YouTube was adapted for a foldable: two 4-inch areas, video above and interaction below. Samsung’s support guidance also describes full-screen settings and notes that Flex mode compatibility varies by app. YouTube’s Android playback guidance explains that player sizing adapts to video dimensions.
Those details explain why a foldable can present YouTube differently, but they do not promise a single layout across manufacturers, models, or software releases. Nor do the official descriptions establish how often foldable users encounter a particular display problem. The right first step is to identify whether the change follows the video’s shape, the phone’s screen state, or a Galaxy display setting.
