YouTube comments appear beside the video because comments are built into the video’s watch-page interface rather than being a separate destination. On a computer, the watch page can show the player and comments in the same viewing area. On a phone, comments are opened by expanding the comments section, while smart TVs and game consoles use a title, About, and comments-panel path.
YouTube’s official help pages document where comments are found and how they behave on each device, but they do not state a single design reason for placing comments beside the player. The safest explanation is therefore about documented layout behavior, not an assumed engagement or viewing strategy.
What “comments beside the video” actually means
A YouTube comment belongs to an individual video’s watch page. It is not attached to a channel in general or to a search result. When you open a video, YouTube provides a comment area as part of that video’s viewing interface. Depending on your device, screen size, account, app version, and the interface being tested, that area may be visible beside the player, below it, or behind an expandable control.

Computer: comments are part of the watch page
On a computer, YouTube presents comments within the watch-page interface. In a wide browser window, this can look like a column beside the video player. In a narrower window, browser zoom, or a different YouTube layout, the same comments may move below the player or require scrolling. The important point is that the comments belong to the watch page; their exact position is not guaranteed.
Pinned comments are described at the top of the watch page. A creator can pin one comment to make it easier to find, but a viewer may still need to scroll or use the page’s comment controls if the window is narrow.
Mobile: expand the comments section
On the YouTube mobile experience, comments are normally represented by a section on the video page. Tap or expand that section to read the conversation. A pinned comment is not necessarily visible in the collapsed view; expanding the comments section is the documented way to expose it.

The mobile layout gives the video more vertical space and treats comments as an expandable part of the page. That is why a phone user can experience the same video without seeing comments beside the player, even though a desktop user sees a side-by-side arrangement.

Smart TVs and game consoles: use the About area
On a smart TV or game console, open the video’s title area, choose About, and then select the comments tile. YouTube opens a comments panel rather than placing a scrolling comment column permanently beside the video.
Select an individual comment to read it and its replies. Writing a comment or replying from a TV or console may require connecting the television or console to the YouTube app on a phone. The exact remote-control prompts can differ by device, but the title-to-About-to-comments route is the documented navigation pattern.
Why YouTube places comments in that area
The documented answer is limited: comments are part of the watch-page experience, and YouTube uses different interfaces for computers, mobile devices, TVs, and consoles. The official help material explains how to find, read, reply to, and manage comments, but it does not give a universal reason for a desktop side-by-side placement.

Those might be plausible hypotheses, but they are not established by the cited help guidance. A side-by-side column should be described as a presentation choice within one version of the watch page.

Two viewers can also see different arrangements without either one being wrong. Screen width, device type, app interface, account state, and YouTube experiments can affect which controls are visible. The reliable rule is to identify the device first, then follow that device’s comments path.
How comment threads and pinned comments work
Replies stay under the original comment
Comments are organized as conversations. YouTube Help states: “Replies to a comment are threaded beneath the original comment so you can follow the conversation.” Opening a comment’s replies shows the discussion attached to that original post instead of mixing every reply into one flat list.
This threading applies whether you reach comments on a computer, expand them on mobile, or open the comments panel on a TV or console. A reply can therefore appear lower in the interface than the original comment even when it was posted later.
Pinned comments are an owner-selected highlight
A pinned comment is placed by the video owner or an authorized channel manager. On a computer, YouTube describes the pinned item at the top of the watch page. On mobile, expand the comments section before looking for it. On a TV or console, open the comments panel through the video’s About area.

Pinning changes prominence, not the underlying thread structure. Replies remain beneath the original comment, and a pinned comment does not make every other comment disappear.
Why comments may not appear in chronological order
Top, Newest, and Most relevant are different views
Comment order is not necessarily a simple timeline. Video owners can choose Top or Newest for watch-page ordering. YouTube also describes Most relevant as the default viewer sorting in its comment system. The labels and available controls can vary by device.
The Top or Most relevant views use more than posting time. YouTube says its Top comments view draws on multiple signals, so a comment posted yesterday can appear above one posted a few minutes ago. Switching to Newest first is the practical way to inspect the latest posts in time order.

If a comment is absent from the initial list, ranking is only one possibility. A channel owner or moderator may have removed it. YouTube may also remove content for a policy violation or omit content its systems assess as potentially inappropriate, spam, or impersonation. A comment can therefore fail to appear even when its author believes it was successfully posted.

Who controls whether a video accepts comments
Creators set availability for individual videos
The owner can change comment settings for an individual video in YouTube Studio or, for the owner’s own videos, in the YouTube mobile app. Those controls determine whether viewers can comment and how the channel handles moderation. The available choices and labels can change as YouTube updates Studio, so use the comment controls attached to the specific video rather than assuming a channel-wide setting applies everywhere.
Video and account status can impose restrictions
- Private videos: YouTube does not support comments on private videos.
- Unlisted videos: Unlisted videos can have comments. Unlisted status alone does not turn comments off.
- Made for Kids videos: Comments are turned off.
- Supervised accounts: Restrictions can limit the ability to change comment settings.
These rules explain why two videos from the same channel can show different comment behavior. A missing comment box is not automatically a loading error; the video’s visibility, audience designation, or account supervision may be responsible.
What to do when comments are not showing
- Check the device path. On a computer, look on the watch page. On mobile, expand the comments section. On a TV or console, open the title, choose About, and select the comments tile.
- Change the sort order. If you are viewing Top comments or Most relevant, switch to Newest first to check whether the comment is lower in the time-ordered list.
- Look for thread replies. A reply is nested beneath its original comment. Open that thread instead of searching the main list for the reply as if it were a separate top-level comment.
- Consider moderation. If the comment is still missing in Newest first, YouTube says it may have been moderated by the channel or removed for a policy violation. Automated systems can also filter suspected spam, impersonation, or potentially inappropriate content.
- Check video and account restrictions. Private videos, Made for Kids videos, and some supervised-account situations have comment limitations. An unlisted video, by contrast, can support comments.
- For creators, review the video’s own setting. Open the individual video in YouTube Studio or the YouTube mobile app and inspect its comment controls. A channel-level expectation does not override a video’s status or audience restrictions.
How to interpret the layout as a viewer
When comments appear beside a video on a computer, treat that column as one view of the watch page, not as a separate comments website. The same video can expose the conversation through an expandable section on a phone or a panel on a television. Moving to another device changes the route, not the video’s association with its comments.

Use the sort selector when you need the newest discussion, and open a thread when you need the context of a reply. If you are looking for a creator’s announcement or clarification, check for a pinned comment but remember that the pinned item may require expansion on mobile.
What the layout means for creators
Creators should verify comment availability on each video rather than assuming that every upload behaves alike. Audience designation, privacy, and supervision rules can disable or restrict comments before a viewer ever reaches the watch page. When comments are enabled, pinning a useful explanation can make it prominent, while moderation tools and sorting determine what other viewers see first.
A viewer’s report that “comments are beside the video” does not identify a problem by itself. It usually describes a computer watch-page arrangement. To troubleshoot a report, ask which device was used, whether the comments section was expanded, which sort option was selected, and whether the video is private, unlisted, or marked Made for Kids.
A quick decision guide
- You see a side column on a computer: You are viewing one watch-page layout; resize or scroll if the column is not fully visible.
- You do not see comments on a phone: Expand the comments section.
- You are using a TV or console: Navigate through the video’s title, About, and comments tile.
- A specific comment is missing: Try Newest first, then consider channel moderation or YouTube policy filtering.
- No one can comment: Check whether the video is private, Made for Kids, or otherwise restricted; unlisted videos can still allow comments.
In short, YouTube comments appear beside the video only in some watch-page layouts. The consistent fact is their relationship to the individual video; the position and access method depend on the device and the video’s settings.
