A WordPress site that is “down” can be suffering from a hosting outage, a DNS or SSL problem, a database failure, a broken plugin or theme, incompatible PHP, exhausted resources, a failed update, damaged files, rewrite rules, or a security block. Start by recording the exact error and HTTP status, checking both the public site and /wp-admin, and confirming whether the problem affects every visitor. Then work through the least destructive checks first.
The distinction between a WordPress problem and an infrastructure problem matters. You can usually isolate a plugin, theme, update, or file issue yourself. DNS, certificates, server health, quotas, firewalls, and authentication rules often require your host or domain provider.
First, identify what “down” means
Open the site in a private browser window and test the front end and /wp-admin separately. Record the complete message, the URL, and the HTTP status if one is shown. Ask someone on another network to test it, because a local DNS or browser cache can mimic an outage.
| What you see | Most useful first check | Likely boundary |
|---|---|---|
| Domain does not resolve, or opens the wrong site | Verify nameservers and DNS records with the registrar and host | Domain or hosting infrastructure |
| Certificate warning, redirect loop, or HTTPS failure | Have the host verify the certificate and SSL/forced-HTTPS configuration | SSL or server configuration |
| “Error Establishing a Database Connection” | Check the four database settings in wp-config.php, then ask the host about quota and database health |
WordPress configuration or database service |
| Critical error or white screen after a change | Use Recovery Mode, then isolate the last plugin, theme, or code change | WordPress code or PHP |
| “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance” that never clears | Confirm the update is finished and remove the root .maintenance file |
WordPress update state |
| Home page works but posts or pages return 404 | Save Settings → Permalinks and check .htaccess and mod_rewrite |
Rewrite configuration |
| Visitors can load the site, but cron or Site Health loopbacks fail | Ask the host to inspect firewall, DNS, SSL, and HTTP-authentication rules | External security or network controls |
Use this safe troubleshooting order
- Create a full backup. Include the database and files before changing code, credentials, plugins, themes, or server settings.
- Capture evidence. Save the exact error text, URL, timestamp, and HTTP status. Note whether only the front end, only the dashboard, or both are affected.
- Check infrastructure first. Review the host status page and control panel, confirm that the domain points to the intended server, and look for storage or database-quota warnings.
- Try WordPress Recovery Mode. A fatal-error notice may offer a special administrator login that loads the dashboard while the faulty extension is paused. Recovery Mode was introduced in WordPress 5.2.
- Review logs. Check
wp-content/debug.logand the server’s error log, but do not leave verbose debugging visible to visitors. - Isolate plugins before editing database values. Deactivate the suspected extension, or rename the plugins directory when the dashboard is unreachable. Re-enable items individually.
- Make one reversible change at a time. Retest the front end and dashboard after every change so the cause remains identifiable.
- Escalate with evidence. Give the host the error, timestamp, affected URLs, and checks already completed; ask specifically about server health, quotas, PHP, SSL, DNS, firewall, and authentication.
1. Hosting or server outage
How it appears
The site may show a host-generated error, time out, return a 5xx status, or fail along with other sites on the same account. A database quota or account resource limit can look like a complete outage even when the physical server is running.

What to do
- Check the hosting provider’s status page and your control panel for incidents, suspended services, disk limits, or database-quota notices.
- Test the domain and, if available, another site on the same account to distinguish a server-wide event from a single installation.
- Contact support when the server is down, the database service is unhealthy, or a quota appears exhausted. Ask whether a recent migration, suspension, or resource limit affects the account.
Do not start replacing WordPress files while the host cannot serve PHP or the database; those changes cannot repair an unavailable server.
2. DNS or domain misconfiguration
How it appears
A browser may report that the domain cannot be found, show a parking page, or load a different website. This occurs when nameservers or DNS records point somewhere other than the server hosting this WordPress installation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat to do
- At the registrar, confirm that the domain uses the intended nameservers.
- In the DNS control panel, verify that the web records point to the current hosting server and that any required subdomain record exists.
- Confirm the destination with the host before changing WordPress files or the
siteurlandhomevalues. DNS is an infrastructure issue; editing PHP cannot correct a record that directs visitors elsewhere.
If the records are correct but some networks still reach the old destination, give the registrar and host the affected resolver and timestamps so they can investigate the DNS service rather than the WordPress application.
3. SSL or HTTPS failure
How it appears
An expired or incorrectly installed certificate can produce browser security warnings. A forced-HTTPS rule can also create redirect loops or prevent WordPress loopback requests when the server’s SSL settings do not match the site’s URL.

What to do
- Test both the HTTP and HTTPS versions and record the exact warning or redirect behavior.
- Ask the host to verify the certificate, certificate chain, virtual-host configuration, and forced-HTTPS rule for the domain.
- Have the host test server-to-site loopbacks after correcting SSL. Do not repeatedly change WordPress URL fields while the certificate or server configuration remains wrong.
4. Database connection failure
How it appears
“Error Establishing a Database Connection” means WordPress cannot open the database it needs to render pages. The cause may be incorrect credentials, an unavailable database server, a full quota, or a compromised account.
What to do
- Open
wp-config.phpand check the database name, database user, database password, and database host. Compare them with the values shown by the host’s database panel. - Check whether the database service is running and whether the account has reached its database or storage quota.
- Ask the host to inspect database-server health and logs, and to check for signs of compromise if the credentials were not recently changed.
Change a credential only when you can update both the hosting database account and wp-config.php consistently; a partial change creates another connection failure.
5. Plugin conflict or fatal error
How it appears
A critical-error screen, white page, or failure immediately after installing, updating, or configuring a plugin strongly suggests a fatal conflict. The dashboard may be unavailable even though the files are intact.
Use Recovery Mode first
If WordPress sends a Recovery Mode link, follow it and sign in through the special administrator session. The error details identify the plugin or component that failed. Deactivate that plugin, then test the site in a normal browser session.

Disable plugins without wp-admin
- Connect with FTP or the host’s file manager.
- Rename
/wp-content/plugins/to a temporary name such asplugins.disabled. Renaming prevents WordPress from loading the plugins without deleting them. - Test the front end and dashboard. If they recover, restore the directory name and deactivate or remove plugins individually until the failing item is identified.
- Reactivate the remaining plugins one at a time, testing after each activation.
Keep the backup made before troubleshooting so you can restore the original plugin files if an update damaged them.
6. Theme or custom-code fatal error
How it appears
A PHP syntax error or incompatible function in a theme, child theme, snippets plugin, or recently edited file can take down both the public site and dashboard. The timing of the failure—immediately after a code edit or theme switch—is valuable evidence.
What to do
- Undo the recent edit if you know exactly what changed.
- If the dashboard is inaccessible, use the file manager or FTP to switch temporarily to an installed default WordPress theme by renaming the active theme’s directory. Do not delete it.
- Inspect
wp-content/debug.logand the server error log for the file and line that triggered the fatal error. - Correct the code or have its author update it for the site’s PHP version, then restore the intended theme and retest.
7. Incompatible PHP version or extension
How it appears
A host-side PHP upgrade can expose outdated plugin or theme code. Conversely, an old PHP release or a missing PHP extension can prevent current WordPress components from running and produce critical errors.
What to do
- Find the PHP version and enabled extensions in the hosting panel or Site Health, if the dashboard still opens.
- Compare that configuration with the requirements of the installed WordPress version, active theme, and plugins.
- Ask the host for a supported PHP configuration or a controlled version change. If the fault began immediately after a PHP change, request a temporary rollback while the incompatible component is updated.
Changing PHP blindly can break more than one component, so preserve the error log and test after each server-side adjustment.

8. Memory or execution limits
How it appears
Exhausted PHP memory or execution time can cause a white screen, a critical error, or a request that times out only on heavy pages and administrative actions. Large imports, image processing, backups, and plugin updates can expose a limit that ordinary page views do not.
What to do
- Check the PHP and web-server logs for memory exhaustion or maximum-execution-time messages.
- Identify the operation that triggers the failure and temporarily disable the responsible plugin or task if possible.
- Ask the host whether the account can safely receive higher memory or execution limits. On shared hosting, the provider may control these values or restrict increases.
Increase limits only after the backup and with host guidance. More memory can mask an inefficient or conflicting component rather than fix it.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →9. Failed update and stuck maintenance mode
How it appears
During an update WordPress creates a file named .maintenance in the site root and displays a maintenance notice. If the update finished but the file remains, every visitor can continue seeing that notice.
What to do
- Check the host’s file manager or FTP and confirm that the update process is no longer running.
- In the WordPress root—the directory containing
wp-adminandwp-content—remove the.maintenancefile. - Reload the front end and dashboard. If either now shows a fatal error, treat the update as a possible plugin, theme, PHP, or corrupted-file problem and continue with the corresponding checks below.
10. Corrupted WordPress files
How it appears
Missing or damaged core files can produce unexplained PHP errors after an interrupted update, filesystem problem, or compromised account. When plugin and theme isolation does not change the symptom, core-file damage becomes more plausible.

Recovery choices
- Restore a known-good backup when the failure began after a change and the backup is recent and trustworthy.
- Replace core files with a fresh WordPress package when a backup is unavailable or the damage is limited to core files. Preserve
wp-contentand the configuration file; replacing them can remove uploads, themes, plugins, or database credentials. - Re-upload
wp-adminandwp-includesfor failures where those directories are damaged, following WordPress’s documented recovery guidance.
Ask the host to scan the account and review filesystem and access logs if corruption may involve a compromise. Do not overwrite unique content directories while trying to repair core.
11. Permalink or .htaccess rewrite failure
How it appears
The home page may load while posts, pages, categories, or other pretty URLs return 404 errors. A migration or server change can leave rewrite rules out of sync with the web server.
What to do
- In the dashboard, open Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes without necessarily changing the selected structure. This flushes WordPress’s rewrite rules.
- If the dashboard is available but the problem persists, inspect the root
.htaccessfile for damaged or missing WordPress rules. - Ask the host to confirm that the server supports the required rewrite module, commonly
mod_rewrite, and that the virtual host permits the rules.
Do not replace .htaccess with a random template; preserve any legitimate redirects or server directives and have the host validate the final file.
12. Firewall, authentication, loopback, or security block
How it appears
The site can appear normal to visitors while scheduled tasks, REST requests, Site Health loopbacks, or administrator requests fail. A firewall rule, DNS mismatch, SSL problem, or HTTP authentication layer outside WordPress can block server-to-server requests.
What to do
- In Site Health, note the failed loopback or scheduled-event message and the time it occurred.
- After disabling plugin and theme causes, ask the host to inspect web-application firewall rules, server firewall logs, DNS resolution from the server, SSL verification, and any HTTP-authentication requirement.
- Have the host test a request originating from the server itself, not only from your browser. A page that works externally does not prove that WordPress can call its own site.
How to choose between two plausible fixes
When several symptoms overlap, choose the check that fits the evidence and requires the least destructive access.
| Candidate fix | Visible symptom | Access needed | Reversibility and boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rename the plugins directory | Critical error or white screen after a plugin change | FTP or file manager | Highly reversible; isolates WordPress code |
| Switch to a default theme | Failure follows a theme or custom-code edit | Dashboard or FTP/file manager | Reversible; isolates theme code |
Check wp-config.php credentials |
Database-connection error | File access plus hosting database panel | Potentially disruptive; verify every value before saving |
| Save Permalinks | Pretty URLs return 404 while the home page works | Dashboard | Low risk; changes rewrite rules inside WordPress |
Remove .maintenance |
Maintenance notice remains after a completed update | FTP or file manager | Low risk only after confirming the update has ended |
| Ask the host to inspect DNS, SSL, firewall, or quotas | Domain, certificate, loopback, or server-level failure | Hosting or registrar support | Infrastructure change; avoid editing application files first |
After recovery: prevent the next outage
- Keep current, tested backups of both files and the database, and verify that a restoration is possible rather than assuming a backup job succeeded.
- Apply WordPress, plugin, theme, PHP, and server changes in a controlled order. Record what changed so a later failure has a clear starting point.
- Review Site Health after updates, especially scheduled events and loopback requests.
- Use uptime monitoring to alert you when the public site stops responding, and review host status notices before treating every alert as a WordPress-code failure.
- Keep access to FTP or the host file manager available. It is the recovery path when a plugin or theme removes dashboard access.
- Turn off public-facing verbose debugging after diagnosis. Logs should remain available to administrators without exposing paths, credentials, or other sensitive details to visitors.
Bottom line
Begin with evidence, a complete backup, and infrastructure checks. Then use Recovery Mode and logs to isolate plugins, themes, PHP, memory, updates, files, and rewrite rules one at a time. If the domain, certificate, database service, quota, firewall, or loopback is outside WordPress, give the host the exact error and timestamp instead of making increasingly risky changes inside the site.
