A slow Windows PC can have several causes at once, so start by checking when the slowdown happens and which system resource is under pressure. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include tools to investigate storage, startup apps, background activity, and updates. These steps can help, but software changes may not make an older PC with limited hardware substantially faster.
Why is my PC slow?
First note when the problem occurs: during startup, after launching a particular app, while multitasking, or throughout the day. Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc. Use Processes to see which apps are using CPU, memory, or disk, and Performance to check overall resource activity. A high reading at one moment does not by itself prove a fault; look for consistently high use or a process that coincides with the slowdown.
Make one change at a time, then check whether the symptom improves. This makes it easier to identify what helped and to undo a change that did not.
Recommended Free Tools
1. Too little free storage
Limited storage can affect performance and leave too little room for Windows updates. Check Settings > System > Storage. Review the temporary files and cleanup recommendations shown there before removing anything. Windows also provides Storage Sense and Disk Cleanup to help clear eligible files. Do not manually delete unfamiliar system folders.

- Memory: 32GB DDR4 Ram
- Storage: 1TB Solid State Drive (SSD) Fast Boot + Storage
- Operating System: Windows 11 Pro (64-bit)
2. Too many startup apps
Apps that launch automatically can slow startup and affect performance after sign-in. In Windows, go to Settings > Apps > Startup, or open Task Manager > Startup apps. Task Manager displays startup impact information. Disable only apps you recognize and do not need to start automatically; some apps or device features may depend on startup components.
3. Background apps and a heavy workload
Many open apps, browser tabs, and background processes can compete for system resources. In Task Manager, check Processes and Performance while the PC feels slow. If an app you are not using is consuming resources, close it and see whether the situation changes. Avoid ending unfamiliar processes simply because they appear active; Windows and other apps need some background processes to run.

4. Unwanted or malicious software
Malware and potentially unwanted apps can consume CPU or disk resources, but slowness alone does not mean a PC is infected. If you see suspicious behavior or software you do not recognize, run a scan with Windows Security and review installed apps. Uninstall software you recognize as unwanted rather than removing unknown system components. Microsoft’s guidance on unwanted software is available in Protect your PC from unwanted software.
5. Windows or drivers need updates
Updates can include fixes and performance improvements, so check Settings > Windows Update for available updates. You can also review optional driver updates there. Updating is a troubleshooting step, not a guarantee that a particular slowdown will disappear.

6. Visual effects or power settings favor appearance or battery life
Reduce visual effects
Windows visual effects use system resources. If performance matters more than animation and appearance, search for Adjust the appearance and performance of Windows, open it, and select Adjust for best performance. This changes visual effects and may make Windows look less polished.

Choose a performance power mode if appropriate
On a laptop, a higher-performance power mode may help when plugged in and power use is not a concern. Find Power mode in Windows Settings and choose the performance-oriented option available on your device. Microsoft warns that best performance uses more power; a laptop may run warmer and its battery may drain faster. Keep a more battery-conscious mode when portability matters more.
7. The storage drive or other hardware is a bottleneck
Older hardware can limit performance even after software cleanup. Microsoft notes that HDD storage is typically slower than SSD or eMMC storage, but that does not mean every PC can be upgraded or that an upgrade guarantees a particular speed improvement.
If your PC uses an HDD, consider an internal SSD upgrade only after checking the computer’s documentation or consulting a qualified technician to confirm compatibility and upgradeability. Persistent slowness during ordinary tasks, or consistently high CPU, memory, or disk use, may warrant assessing the device’s health and whether an upgrade or replacement makes sense. Microsoft lists signs to consider in How to know it’s time for a new PC.
How do I make my Windows PC faster? A low-risk order
- Identify the pattern. Note whether the slowdown occurs at startup, with a particular app, during multitasking, or all the time.
- Check Task Manager. Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc; look at Processes and Performance, then check Startup apps for recognized apps you do not need to launch automatically.
- Review storage. Open Settings > System > Storage and review cleanup recommendations before deleting files.
- Reduce unnecessary activity. Close unused apps and tabs, and disable only unneeded startup apps you recognize.
- Check for unwanted software if there are signs of it. Use Windows Security to scan and remove software you have identified as unwanted.
- Check Windows Update. Install relevant updates and review optional driver updates if appropriate.
- Restart and reassess. After each meaningful change, check whether the original symptom improved before making another change.
If the slowdown began after an update or remains severe, review Windows recovery options and begin with the least disruptive route that fits the problem. Back up important files first: some recovery options can cause data loss. Microsoft explains the available routes in Recovery options in Windows.
