Your phone or computer usually switches to another Wi-Fi network because it has that network saved and is allowed to join it automatically. But a change in Wi-Fi band or access point can look like a network switch even when the displayed network name stays the same. Check whether the name changes first; that points you toward the right fix.

Why does my Wi-Fi keep connecting to other networks?

Devices remember networks they have joined before. When Wi-Fi is on, Android can automatically connect to nearby networks used previously, and Apple devices choose among known networks using several criteria. On Windows, a device can also connect to a different band under the same network name, so the change may not involve a different saved network at all.

Start by checking the exact network name (SSID) shown before and after the switch:

  • The name changes: Your device may be joining a different saved network. Check its saved or known networks and automatic-join settings.
  • The name stays the same: The router may use that one name for multiple Wi-Fi bands, or the device may be moving between access points that share a name. The change may not be a switch to a different saved network.

On a Windows network that uses one name for multiple bands, Windows automatically connects to the best available band. The band can change without the network name changing. Microsoft explains how Wi-Fi bands and home layout affect connections.

How to stop your device joining an unwanted network

Android phones and tablets

To remove a saved network, open Settings > Network & internet > Internet, touch and hold the network, then tap Forget. Menu names can differ by manufacturer, and some steps apply only to Android 12 and later. Forgetting the network removes its saved connection details; you may need to enter the password again to reconnect. See Google’s instructions for connecting to and managing Wi-Fi networks on Android.

Android also has a separate Turn on Wi-Fi automatically feature on some devices. It can turn Wi-Fi on near saved networks; it is not the same as forgetting one network. If the problem is automatic connection to a particular network, manage that network rather than disabling Wi-Fi altogether. The setting’s availability and location vary by Android version and device. Google describes advanced network settings for Android.

Apple devices

To keep a known network from joining automatically, turn off Auto-Join for that network, or forget it if you no longer want it saved. Turning off Auto-Join retains the network; forgetting removes it, and you may need its password to join again. Apple’s selection process considers factors including past manual choices, network category, configuration method, Wi-Fi standard, band, security, and signal strength. Signal strength is one factor, not a universal rule that the strongest network always wins. See Apple’s explanation of how its devices choose known Wi-Fi networks.

Windows PCs

If Windows joins a different network name, review the Wi-Fi networks saved on the PC and remove or stop automatically connecting to the unwanted one using the controls available in your Windows version. If the PC is managed by an employer or school, an administrator may have configured its Wi-Fi profile. Microsoft Intune’s managed-profile settings include automatic connection when a network is in range and whether to connect to a more preferred network when available. Those policy controls are for managed devices, not a universal consumer Windows setting. Check with your IT administrator before changing a work or school connection. Microsoft documents these Windows Wi-Fi profile settings for Intune.

What if the network name stays the same?

One network name across multiple bands

A router can broadcast multiple Wi-Fi bands under a single SSID. Windows chooses an available band automatically, so a band change may happen without the network name changing. Separate names can make the bands easier to distinguish, but that is a router configuration choice—not a universal fix for unwanted switching.

The bands also differ in coverage. Microsoft describes 5 GHz as generally having shorter range and poorer obstacle penetration than 2.4 GHz. The 6 GHz band requires a compatible router, device, and drivers, and also has shorter range and poorer wall penetration. Changing bands will not necessarily resolve every connection change. See Microsoft’s guidance on bands and Wi-Fi coverage.

Multiple access points with the same name

If the switch happens as you move through a building, the network may use multiple access points with the same SSID. In that case, the displayed name can remain unchanged while the device moves between access points. Identify whether the home, office, or campus system uses multiple access points before changing saved-network settings; the name alone cannot tell you which access point is serving the device.

A practical troubleshooting order

  1. Record the network name before and after the change. A changed name points toward a different network; an unchanged name is consistent with a band or access-point transition.
  2. Check saved networks on the affected device. For an unwanted saved network, disable its automatic joining if you want to keep it, or forget it if you do not want the device to use it.
  3. If one router name is involved, check its Wi-Fi configuration. Confirm whether it uses one SSID across multiple bands. Separate names can make bands visible, but are not automatically the best choice.
  4. If this is a work or school device, ask the administrator. A managed profile may set whether the device connects automatically or moves to a more preferred network.
  5. If the change occurs while moving around, check for multiple access points. A shared network name can conceal a handoff between access points.

The appropriate fix depends on whether the device is joining a different saved name, changing bands, or moving between access points. Start with the network name and the affected device’s settings rather than assuming the router is faulty.
