Routers do not automatically slow down just because they get older. A slowdown that appears over time is often caused by more devices sharing the network, changing Wi-Fi conditions, outdated firmware, or a router that can no longer keep up with your internet plan and household needs. Check the connection path before deciding to replace the router.

Why a network can feel slower over time

“Slow internet” can describe several different problems. The bottleneck might be your internet service, modem, router, Ethernet cable, computer or phone, or the wireless signal between a device and the router. A slow Wi-Fi connection does not by itself prove that the router is failing.

Household use and the surrounding wireless environment can change even when the router stays the same. More people or devices using the network at once, nearby Wi-Fi networks, and demanding activities can affect performance. Distance, walls, other obstacles, router placement, and interference can also weaken a connection. Google’s guidance covers factors that affect Wi-Fi speed, while the FCC notes that multiple Wi-Fi devices can affect performance in its broadband speed guide.

There is also a mismatch that can develop between an older router and newer demands. Your internet plan may have become faster, or your household may now have more devices and broader coverage needs. Older router or client-device standards may not deliver the speeds or capacity you expect. Apple explains the role of Wi-Fi standards and compatible devices in its recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points.

TP-Link Deco X55 AX3000 WiFi 6 Mesh System, Deco X55(3-Pack)
  • Wi-Fi 6 Mesh Wi-Fi - Next-gen Wi-Fi 6 AX3000 whole home mesh system to eliminate weak Wi-Fi for good(2×2/HE160 2402 Mbps plus 2×2 574 Mbps)
  • Whole Home WiFi Coverage - Covers up to 6500 square feet with seamless high-performance Wi-Fi 6 and eliminate dead zones and buffering. Better than traditional WiFi booster and Range Extenders
  • Connect More Devices - Deco X55(3-pack) is strong enough to connect up to 150 devices with strong and reliable Wi-Fi
  • Our Cybersecurity Commitment - TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement
  • More Gigabit Ports - Each Deco X55 has 3 Gigabit Ethernet ports(6 in total for a 2-pack) and supports Wired Ethernet Backhaul for better speeds. Any of them can work as a Wi-Fi Router

Heat is worth checking, but it is not proof of a universal aging pattern. Linksys says enclosed placement can restrict airflow and weaken Wi-Fi, and that trapped heat may affect performance and lifespan. That guidance supports keeping a router ventilated; it does not establish that all routers lose speed at a predictable rate as they age. See Linksys guidance on router overheating.

How to tell whether the router is the bottleneck

Use comparisons to narrow down where the slowdown occurs. Change one factor at a time when possible, and compare results using the same device and a similar test method.

TP-Link Deco S4 Mesh AC1900 WiFi System, Deco S4(3-Pack)
  • A New Way to WiFi: Deco Mesh technology gives you a better WiFi experience in all directions with faster WiFi speeds and strong WiFi signal to cover your whole home.
  • Better Coverage than traditional WiFi routers: Deco S4 three units work seamlessly to create a WiFi mesh network that can cover homes up to 5, 500 square feet. No dead zone anymore.
  • Seamless and Stable WiFi Mesh: Rather than wifi range extender that need multiple network names and passwords, Deco S4 allows you to enjoy seamless roaming throughout the house, with a single network name and password.
  • Incredibly fast 3× 3 6 Stream AC1900 speeds makes the deco capable of providing connectivity for up to 100 devices.
  • With advanced Deco Mesh Technology, units work together to form a unified network with a single network name. Devices automatically switch between Decos as you move through your home for the fastest possible speeds.
  • Check more than one device. If only one phone or computer is slow, investigate that device before blaming the router.
  • Compare wired and wireless connections. If Ethernet is also slow, the Wi-Fi signal alone is unlikely to explain the problem. Check the service, modem, router, and cabling. TP-Link’s slow-speed troubleshooting guidance and NETGEAR’s overview of factors that affect Wi-Fi speed recommend considering more than the wireless connection.
  • Compare near and far from the router. If performance is good nearby but poor in one room, distance, walls, placement, or interference may be the issue rather than the broadband service.
  • Look for busy-time patterns. Note whether the slowdown happens when several people stream, play games, or make video calls, or at particular times of day. Multiple active devices and network traffic can affect results.
  • If practical, test the computer directly on the modem. Use the same computer for a comparison with the router in the path. Follow the modem and provider’s instructions, and reconnect the router afterward. A slow direct connection points away from Wi-Fi and toward the provider, modem, or service path; ask your ISP to check your plan speed, outages, and line conditions. TP-Link describes this direct-modem test in its troubleshooting steps.

What to try before replacing anything

  1. Restart the router. If the issue seems temporary, power the router off and back on. The FCC’s consumer guide says, “Sometimes a simple router reboot—by powering it off and then back on again—can resolve a problem.” See the FCC broadband speed guide.
  2. Check for firmware updates. Use the router maker’s instructions for your model, and enable automatic updates if available. Apple notes that router firmware updates can provide stability, performance, and security improvements in its Wi-Fi router recommendations. Update availability and steps vary by model.
  3. Improve placement and ventilation. Put the router in an open, central location if possible, away from obstructions and heat-trapping enclosures. Walls and building materials affect radio coverage, so the best location depends on the home.
  4. Check local Wi-Fi congestion. Nearby networks can interfere with your connection. Google suggests reviewing nearby networks and channel options; if automatic channel selection is not helping, try a manual channel and test the result. The effect depends on the equipment and local environment. See Google’s Wi-Fi interference guidance.
  5. Review device support and router settings. Check the Wi-Fi capabilities of both router and client devices, along with any custom settings that may affect speed. A newer router standard helps only when the connecting device can use it, too.

When a router replacement is justified

Consider an upgrade when tests show that the router cannot deliver the speed you subscribe to, it no longer receives updates, or it cannot provide the coverage and capacity your household needs. The FCC recommends checking your router model against your subscribed speed and notes that if updates are unavailable, you may need a new router or upgraded ISP-provided equipment. See the FCC guide.

There is no universal replacement interval established by the sources cited here. Make the decision based on demonstrated capability and support, not age alone. If your ISP supplied the equipment, ask whether it offers an upgrade or rental option and compare its terms with buying your own equipment.
