A VPS that stops accepting SSH connections after hours or days is showing a symptom, not a diagnosis. The underlying problem may be exhausted memory, CPU saturation, a full filesystem or inode table, storage I/O stalls, network or provider limits, or a kernel/filesystem fault. Rebooting can restore service, but it can also erase the evidence and leave the underlying leak or capacity limit unchanged.

The reliable approach is to capture evidence through the provider console while the failure is happening, compare it with historical metrics, and apply the smallest fix that matches the measured cause.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Start by defining what “unresponsive” means

Different symptoms point to different layers of the system. Record exactly what fails before changing anything.

Observed symptom What it suggests First check
SSH times out, but the provider console works Network filtering, a saturated service, or an overloaded SSH process Console login, uptime, process list, and interface counters
Ping fails, but the console still responds Firewall rules, a network-path problem, or ICMP being disabled Console networking, ip -s link, routes, and provider metrics
SSH and application requests are slow; console is sluggish Memory pressure, CPU contention, or storage wait free -h, vmstat, top, and disk statistics
All network access and the console freeze Kernel lockup, severe I/O hang, host issue, or complete resource exhaustion Out-of-band console output, boot diagnostics, and provider incident status
The machine recovers after reboot and degrades again over time A leak, unbounded cache, scheduled workload, log growth, or a recurring quota limit Historical memory, disk, I/O, and job timelines

Do not infer the cause from one graph. Microsoft describes bottlenecks as relationships between metrics, not individual utilization values. A high load average with moderate CPU use, for example, can mean processes are waiting on disk or network operations rather than consuming CPU cycles.

What to do during the next incident

1. Record the timeline before touching the server

  • Write down the first observed time, the last successful SSH session, and which services were affected.
  • Test the provider console, SSH, HTTPS or other application ports, and ping separately.
  • Note whether one application failed or every service became slow.
  • Record deployments, backups, database jobs, certificate renewals, package updates, and traffic changes near the failure.

A short timeline lets you match a spike in a chart or a scheduled task with the incident instead of treating the reboot time as the beginning of the problem.

2. Use an out-of-band console when SSH is unavailable

Open the VPS provider’s serial, web, or recovery console. If the normal filesystem cannot be mounted or the operating system will not boot, use rescue mode or the provider’s offline diagnostics. Avoid an immediate hard reboot when the console still accepts input; transient kernel, memory, and I/O evidence may disappear on restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Capture a consistent snapshot of live state

Run the following commands as soon as you can. Save the output to persistent or remote storage if the local disk is suspect.

date -Is
uptime
top -H -b -n 1
free -h
vmstat 1 5
df -h
df -i
journalctl -k --since "1 hour ago"

top -H exposes busy threads, while vmstat 1 5 shows short-term run-queue, memory, swap, and I/O behavior. The kernel journal command should cover a period that includes the failure; adjust the interval when the event is older.

4. Add targeted measurements

  • For suspected storage stalls, run iostat -xz 1 5 and, where available, iotop.
  • For network symptoms, run ip -s link, inspect routes and DNS, and use vnstat or permitted iperf3 tests.
  • After recovery, inspect prior-boot errors with journalctl -b -1 -p err, journalctl -k, and dmesg -T.

Copy command output before clearing logs or rebuilding the instance. If the machine is failing writes, send the capture to another system or the provider console transcript.

Memory exhaustion and the OOM killer

When available memory and usable swap are exhausted, the operating system cannot satisfy new allocations. Linux may invoke the out-of-memory (OOM) killer, which terminates one or more processes to recover. The result can look like a frozen VPS: the web server disappears, SSH cannot fork a session, or essential services repeatedly restart.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How to confirm memory pressure

free -h
vmstat 1 5
top -o %MEM
cat /proc/meminfo
dmesg | grep -i -E 'oom|out of memory|killed process'
journalctl -k | grep -i -E 'oom|out of memory|killed process'
  • In free -h, pay attention to available memory and swap use, not just the “used” column; Linux uses otherwise idle RAM for cache.
  • vmstat reveals swap-in and swap-out activity. Sustained swapping can make the server appear hung even before an OOM event.
  • Kernel messages identify the process selected by the OOM killer and may show a container or cgroup limit rather than a host-wide shortage.

Fix the measured cause

  1. Reduce the offending process’s demand: cap worker counts, fix an application leak, bound an in-memory cache, or stop an accidental data-processing job.
  2. Check service-manager and container cgroup limits. A process can hit its assigned limit while the VPS still has unused physical RAM.
  3. Add swap as a temporary buffer when the workload is bursty and storage performance is acceptable. Swap is not a substitute for enough RAM; heavy swapping can worsen responsiveness.
  4. Increase the VPS memory tier when demand is structural and cannot be reduced safely.

Do not make a reboot the permanent remedy. If memory climbs steadily after every restart, retain per-process and service-level memory history and fix the growth pattern.

CPU saturation, load average, and steal time

A CPU-bound process can starve SSH and application workers. Virtual machines also report steal time: cycles the hypervisor allocated to another tenant or host task. High load is not synonymous with high CPU utilization; processes blocked on disk or network I/O also raise load average.

Identify the type of contention

top
htop
mpstat -P ALL 1 5
pidstat -u -w 1 5
  • High user time points to application computation.
  • High system time suggests kernel work, excessive networking, or syscall activity.
  • High iowait points toward storage or another blocked device operation.
  • High steal time indicates contention at the virtualization host; compare it with the provider’s CPU and host metrics.

Apply a targeted response

Throttle or reschedule batch work, reduce application worker counts, or optimize the query or job that consumes CPU. If steal time remains high while your workload is otherwise modest, collect timestamps and provider metrics and ask the provider to investigate host contention. Moving to a larger CPU allocation may help only when your own workload is the limiting factor.

Full filesystems, exhausted inodes, and slow storage

Applications can fail when a filesystem has no free blocks or no free inodes. A disk that is technically below 100 percent full can still be unusable if a workload creates huge numbers of small files. Separately, a storage device can have free space but respond so slowly that processes queue until SSH appears dead.

Check capacity and queueing

df -h
df -i
iostat -xz 1 5
vmstat 1 5
iotop

Use df -h for blocks and df -i for inodes. In iostat, look for growing request queues and high await or utilization values on the affected device. Match those readings with application logs to find which process is generating the load.

Recover without deleting blindly

  • Remove or rotate only data you have identified as disposable, such as old logs or completed temporary files.
  • Fix the source of runaway logs and verify that rotation actually compresses or removes old files.
  • Check deleted-but-open files with lsof +L1; restarting the owning service may release space, but capture evidence first.
  • Move growth-heavy data, increase the volume, or choose storage with appropriate performance when the requirement is permanent.

Google Cloud documentation notes that filesystem damage can follow an unclean shutdown, a full disk, or an I/O error. If the instance will not boot, use provider boot diagnostics and offline filesystem repair rather than repeatedly forcing power cycles. Follow the filesystem’s repair guidance and keep a backup or snapshot before destructive repair.

Network faults and provider limits

A network path can fail while CPU and RAM look normal. Packet loss, interface errors, broken DNS, exhausted connection tracking, or a plan’s throughput limit can make an application look frozen. A provider may also impose bandwidth or packet-per-second limits that are not visible in ordinary process metrics.

Separate local, remote, and provider causes

ip -s link
ip route
ss -s
vnstat

Interface RX/TX errors and drops indicate a local or virtual interface problem. Compare traffic history with the VPS plan’s published network limits and the provider’s graphs. Test DNS resolution independently from a known-good network, and use iperf3 only where you have permission and a controlled endpoint. Check provider status information for regional or host incidents.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If only one service is unreachable, inspect its listener, firewall, reverse proxy, and connection pool. If every service loses connectivity at the same time, preserve interface counters and timestamps before changing firewall rules or restarting networking.

Kernel, filesystem, and configuration faults

Kernel panics, soft lockups, driver failures, failed updates, and filesystem errors can leave a VPS partly alive or completely unreachable. Configuration changes can create the same symptom: an invalid network rule, a service that consumes all process IDs, or a boot dependency that waits forever.

Review logs after service returns

journalctl -b -1 -p err
journalctl -k
dmesg -T

Search for panic, soft-lockup, watchdog, filesystem, disk, driver, and failed-update messages around the recorded incident time. If the console is available during the event, preserve the current journal before rebooting. After recovery, compare the current boot with the previous boot using journalctl -b -1.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When the machine will not boot

  1. Use provider boot diagnostics to determine whether the kernel, init system, or filesystem is failing.
  2. Attach the volume to rescue mode or another recovery environment if supported.
  3. Copy logs and configuration before repair.
  4. Run the filesystem’s offline check only with the volume unmounted and a current backup or snapshot.
  5. Roll back the failed package, kernel, or configuration change once evidence identifies it.

Why failures that appear “after a while” need historical data

A one-time snapshot shows the state at capture time, not the path that led there. Retain time-series data for memory and swap pressure, CPU and load, steal time, disk blocks and inodes, I/O latency, network errors and throughput, service health, and kernel messages.

Look for these shapes:

  • A steady memory climb followed by a restart indicates a leak, unbounded cache, or worker accumulation.
  • Disk usage that rises in steps often matches logs, backups, uploads, or database growth.
  • Regular spikes point to cron jobs, timers, snapshots, antivirus scans, or scheduled reports.
  • Rising I/O latency with normal CPU suggests storage contention or provider throttling.
  • Increasing steal time without a workload change suggests host-level contention.

Correlate the chart timestamps with application logs, deployment records, database maintenance, and provider events. The first metric to cross a limit is not always the root cause; memory pressure can cause swapping, which creates I/O wait, which then raises load.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

When a reboot is appropriate

Reboot when service restoration requires it, when the kernel is locked, or when the provider directs a recovery action. Before restarting, capture the console screen, command output, kernel messages, and provider graphs if the system still responds. A reboot clears processes and some transient state, but it does not remove a memory leak, reduce a recurring job, add storage capacity, or change a network quota.

After the system returns, immediately compare the pre-reboot evidence with the new baseline. Verify that all critical services started, that mounts are present, that no filesystem is read-only, and that monitoring is reporting again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build prevention into the VPS

Install persistent monitoring rather than relying on a manual check after an outage. Store logs remotely or in persistent journal storage so a failed disk or reboot does not destroy the timeline.

Metrics and alerts to retain

  • Available memory, swap activity, OOM and cgroup-kill messages.
  • CPU utilization, load, run queue, iowait, and steal time.
  • Filesystem blocks and inodes for every mounted volume.
  • Disk latency, queue depth, and device errors.
  • Network throughput, packet errors, drops, DNS failures, and service-level latency.
  • Process health, restart counts, HTTP or application checks, and SSH availability.
  • Kernel, filesystem, disk, driver, and failed-update events.

Set alerts before exhaustion

Choose warning and critical levels below the point where services fail, based on your workload’s normal baseline. Alert on a trend as well as an instantaneous value: a filesystem filling steadily or memory declining over several hours is actionable before either reaches a hard limit. Review scheduled jobs, backup retention, database growth, application worker limits, and cache policies whenever the baseline changes.

A concise decision path

If you observe Prioritize Typical corrective action
OOM messages, exhausted swap, or a process killed by the kernel Memory and cgroup limits Reduce demand, correct the leak, add temporary swap, or increase RAM
High user/system CPU or high steal time CPU workload or host contention Throttle or optimize the job; escalate host contention with evidence
100% blocks or inodes, or rapidly growing disk usage Filesystem capacity Safely rotate data, fix growth, and expand storage
High I/O wait, queueing, or latency with free space Storage performance Find the issuing workload and address contention or throttling
Packet errors, loss, DNS failure, or throughput at a plan limit Network path or provider quota Correct local networking, reduce traffic, or change the network allocation
Kernel, filesystem, driver, or failed-update errors Operating-system integrity Preserve logs, repair offline, and roll back the identified fault

The most useful fix is the one that explains both the live symptom and the historical pattern. Keep the capture commands, the timeline, and the resulting change in an incident record so the next event can be diagnosed without starting over.
