A television USB port is not automatically a suitable power supply. Many ports provide only the current needed for basic USB accessories, while a streaming stick can need more power or a steadier supply during startup. An external hard drive may draw still more, and some TVs do not support USB hard drives at all. The reliable fix is to separate the picture connection from the power connection: keep the device on HDMI, but use its supplied wall adapter when the TV port cannot meet its requirements. For a drive, verify the exact TV model’s USB specifications and storage compatibility first.
Power behavior is model-specific. Sony, for example, documents 5 V at 500 mA (2.5 W) for the USB 2.0 port on its KDL-55XBR8; that figure must not be treated as a universal limit for every television. Roku and Google likewise publish different adapter requirements for their devices.
Why a TV USB port can fail even when it fits the cable
USB describes a connector and communication standard, not one guaranteed power budget. A television may expose a USB-A port for firmware updates, photos, low-power accessories or service functions. Its output can be lower than the supply bundled with a streaming player, and the port may briefly dip when the player starts. A plug that fits therefore proves only physical compatibility.
Streaming hardware uses USB for electricity and HDMI for video. If the HDMI input is wrong, the cable is loose or the television is on a different source, the screen can stay black even when power is perfect. Conversely, a player can display a low-power warning, flash a red indicator or repeatedly restart while HDMI is connected correctly. Diagnose those two paths separately.

Documented power examples
| Device or port | Published electrical figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick setup cited by Roku | 5 V, 1 A adapter | Use the supplied adapter and a wall outlet if the television USB port cannot provide enough power. Roku setup instructions |
| Chromecast with Google TV or Google TV Streamer | 5 V, 1.5 A replacement adapter recommendation | Google says to use the included cable and adapter where possible; do not transfer this rating to another device. Google low-power troubleshooting |
| Sony KDL-55XBR8 television USB 2.0 port | 5 V at 500 mA (2.5 W) | This is a specification for that model, not a universal television output. Sony support article |
| Google removable-storage hub configuration | Charger higher than 1.5 A / 7.5 W | Applies to the documented compatible USB-C hub with power delivery; Google warns it is not a general-purpose solution and may not work in every setup. Google storage instructions |
Roku states that “The USB port on some TVs may be unable to power a Streaming Stick.” Google similarly warns that a device connected to a TV USB port or a different adapter “might not be getting enough power.” Those warnings describe a power mismatch, not a defective HDMI socket.
Signs the problem is insufficient or interrupted power
- An on-screen low-power or insufficient-power message appears.
- A Roku player shows a flashing red light.
- The streaming interface starts, then the stick reboots during setup or playback.
- The player works from a wall outlet but not from the television USB port.
- The device loses power whenever the television enters standby and boots again when the set wakes.
- An external hard drive clicks, spins up repeatedly or disappears from the TV’s media menu.
These signs are clues rather than proof. A black screen without an indicator light can also result from a wrong HDMI input, an unseated HDMI plug or a failed cable. Check the display path before replacing hardware. Google’s black-screen guidance recommends verifying the selected input and trying another power source when there is no indicator light. Diagnose the setup in the right order
- Identify every model. Record the exact streaming-stick model, television model and, for storage, the drive’s voltage/current label. Requirements vary between generations that look similar.
- Confirm the HDMI path. Select the HDMI input occupied by the stick, push the connector fully into the TV and player, and test another HDMI input if available. This prevents a video problem from being mistaken for a power problem.
- Observe the symptom. Note whether a low-power message, flashing indicator, repeated reboot or complete absence of lights occurs. A stable picture from wall power is a strong comparison test.
- Use the original cable and adapter. Connect the manufacturer-supplied USB cable directly to the supplied adapter and plug that adapter into a reliable wall outlet. Remove USB hubs, extension switches and intermediate adapters while testing.
- Reseat both power connections. Unplug the cable at the player and adapter, wait a few seconds, then reconnect both ends firmly. A loose low-voltage connector can mimic an undersized port.
- Test the television USB port only after the wall test. If wall power works and TV USB power does not, the television port is below the device’s needs or is being switched off. If neither source works, investigate the player, cable, HDMI path or outlet.
- Check standby behavior. Turn the television off and on while the stick is powered from TV USB. If the stick always reboots after the set wakes, the port is likely disabled during standby; use wall power for uninterrupted operation.

Do not assume a higher-numbered adapter is automatically safer. Match the voltage, connector and cable specified for the player. A replacement with the wrong voltage or an unsuitable cable can create a different fault even if its plug fits.
Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer
Google recommends the included power adapter and cable. For a replacement for the named devices, its troubleshooting guidance specifies 5 V / 1.5 A. Plug the adapter directly into a wall outlet and avoid placing a USB-C hub or switch between the adapter and the streaming device during diagnosis. Google’s low-power instructions and Google’s device specifications provide the model context.
If the device has no indicator light, use Google’s black-screen checks as well as the power test. A wall adapter cannot correct a wrong HDMI source or a damaged HDMI connection.

Why the stick restarts when the TV turns on
Some televisions remove power from their USB ports when they are off or in standby. A stick connected to that port must boot again when the television restores power. Roku documents this behavior for USB-powered players: a restart each time the TV turns on can occur because the television USB supply was interrupted. Roku restart guidance
Standby behavior differs by television model and sometimes by USB socket. If you need the player to remain ready, route power to a wall outlet instead of relying on the TV’s USB switching. This also removes startup timing from the diagnosis.
When an external hard drive is not recognized
There are two independent checks: whether the television supports the drive function and whether its USB port can deliver the drive’s required power. Read the TV manual for explicit USB-HDD support, supported file systems, maximum capacity and the intended use (media playback, recording or another function). A port intended only for service or photo playback may not mount a hard drive.

Then read the drive’s label or manual. A bus-powered drive that needs more current than the TV can supply may fail to spin up, disconnect under load or repeatedly reset. Sony’s KDL-55XBR8 documentation says its USB 2.0 port provides 5 V at 500 mA (2.5 W) and that a hard disk requiring more power needs an external supply. Sony’s model-specific support article is evidence for that television only; it is not a general limit for all TVs.
Use a separately powered drive when the TV allows it
An externally powered USB hard drive can solve a power shortfall because its motor and electronics draw from their own adapter. It does not bypass the television’s software restrictions: the TV must still support that drive type, file system and capacity. Check those conditions before buying a powered enclosure or drive.

Using a hub for removable storage on Google streaming devices
Google documents a narrow arrangement for adding removable storage to supported Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer setups: a compatible USB-C hub with power delivery and a charger higher than 1.5 A / 7.5 W. The hub, cable, storage device and charger must all be compatible. Google explicitly says the method is not intended for general use and is not guaranteed in every configuration. Follow the instructions at Google’s removable-storage page rather than treating any USB-C hub as interchangeable.

A powered hub is not a universal cure for a television that cannot read a hard drive, nor does it make an unsupported file system compatible. Use it only for the documented streaming-device scenario.
How to choose a replacement adapter or accessory
Use this checklist before ordering anything:
| Check | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Exact device and generation | Roku and Google publish different requirements, and requirements can change between generations. |
| Voltage and available current or wattage | The adapter must meet the device’s specified voltage and current; a connector shape alone says nothing about electrical suitability. |
| Connector and cable | Use the supplied cable where the manufacturer recommends it. Cable wiring and connector fit affect reliable delivery. |
| Power during TV standby | A wall outlet avoids reboot cycles caused by a television that turns its USB supply off. |
| For a hard drive: TV support, file system and purpose | Power cannot overcome a TV that does not support USB-HDD playback or recording. |
| For a Google storage hub: power delivery and charger rating | The documented setup requires a compatible USB-C PD hub and a charger above 1.5 A / 7.5 W, with no guarantee for every configuration. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
There is no light and no picture
Verify the wall outlet, adapter connections and HDMI input first. Try the manufacturer’s cable and adapter directly, then test another HDMI input. If the device remains dark from a known-good wall outlet, the fault is not explained by the TV USB port alone.
The stick works briefly, then reboots
Move it permanently to the supplied wall adapter. Reboots that disappear on wall power indicate inadequate or unstable TV USB delivery; reboots that continue point toward the player, cable, adapter or software and require the manufacturer’s device-specific support.

Check the TV manual for supported file systems, capacities and USB-HDD functions, then verify the drive’s own requirements. If the TV supports the drive but its port cannot supply enough power, use the drive’s external adapter. Avoid repeatedly power-cycling a clicking drive, which can worsen mechanical faults.
Everything works until the TV enters standby
That pattern is consistent with model-dependent USB power switching. Keep the streaming device on wall power, or consult the TV manual for a setting that leaves the relevant USB port energized if such a setting exists.
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- Not every TV USB port supplies 500 mA; the Sony figure applies to one cited model.
- A USB-C, USB-A or micro-USB connector does not identify the required voltage or current.
- A larger advertised current number does not guarantee compatibility; voltage, cable, connector and device specifications must all match.
- A powered hub does not make every external drive or file system work with every TV.
- Replacing the streaming stick should not be the first step when the included adapter and wall outlet have not been tested.
