A brief crack, pop, or click from a TV around switch-off is often the casing responding to temperature change: parts warm during use, then contract as the set cools. That can make a sound at night, but nighttime itself is not known to cause it. A short casing noise is different from a sustained electrical hum or panel buzz, and the sound alone does not prove the screen is cracked or the TV is faulty.
Why a TV can crack or pop after you turn it off
Heat from operation can make exterior materials expand slightly. After shutdown, those parts cool and contract; components may move against one another and produce a brief crack, pop, or click. Sony says small expansion or contraction related to temperature changes can cause creaking, crackling, or popping when a TV is turned on or off. Sony’s support guidance also notes that where the sound seems to come from, and how noticeable it is, may vary with temperature or humidity.
LG describes the casing process as “thermal expansion noise.” Its August 18, 2025 guidance explains that exterior plastic and other case components can expand at different rates as the TV heats up, creating friction and clicking. LG says this noise is not a product defect in the circumstances described. Its guidance was created for all models, but that does not mean every model or every noise behaves identically. LG’s explanation covers the mechanism and factors that can affect it.
Samsung’s India support page, last updated July 30, 2024, specifically attributes some popping or cracking after switch-off to parts contracting as they cool after warming during use. Samsung describes sounds caused by that process as harmless to operation. Since this is regional support guidance, consult the guidance for your model and location rather than treating it as a universal diagnosis. Samsung India’s article gives its explanation.

Why you notice the noise at night
A pop after the TV is switched off fits the cooling explanation above. In a quiet room, a small sound may simply stand out more; that is a practical inference, not a finding established by the manufacturer guidance. The cited sources identify temperature and humidity as relevant environmental factors, but do not establish nighttime as a separate physical cause.
Room temperature, humidity, season, how long the TV has been used, and product size can affect how audible casing noises are, according to LG. LG also cautions that a humidifier near the TV may make the noise more pronounced. These are factors that may change the sound, not proof that a particular room condition is the cause in an individual case.

How to distinguish a casing pop from hum or buzz
A brief crack, pop, or click near warm-up or cooldown is consistent with casing movement. A sustained low-level hum or panel buzz is a different kind of sound. An LG television manual distinguishes cracking associated with thermal contraction from electrical circuit humming or panel buzzing, and says the generated sounds it describes do not affect performance or reliability. The manual’s model and date applicability are not established here, so use it as a general distinction rather than model-specific advice. Read the LG manual section on generated sound.

When describing what you hear to support, note when it occurs, whether it is brief or sustained, and whether normal TV operation is affected. Those observations can help support staff assess the issue, but they are not a diagnostic test.

What to do if the TV makes the noise
- If it is an occasional brief casing pop or crack around power-on, power-off, or cooldown and the TV otherwise works normally, check the support guidance for your exact model and region.
- If the sound is unlike a short casing noise or occurs alongside impaired operation, contact the manufacturer for model-specific guidance.
- Do not conclude from the word “crack” alone that the screen is physically cracked, that the TV is defective, or that the noise is electrically dangerous.
Manufacturer guidance does not set a universal sound-level or duration threshold for service. Avoid opening the TV or changing its ventilation based only on a brief pop; the cited guidance does not recommend either as a remedy.
