A soundbar can support Dolby Atmos, DTS:X or lossless surround and still fail to deliver those formats when the TV cannot pass them through. The limiting point may be the TV’s HDMI port, its ARC/eARC implementation, a digital-audio setting, the source device, or the soundtrack itself. Audio quality is determined by the entire path: source and track, TV input and processing, TV-to-soundbar connection, and the soundbar’s decoder.
The practical fix is to match all four devices and settings. Confirm the exact TV port and pass-through formats, connect to the labeled ARC or eARC port, select the external audio system, and use a source-to-soundbar connection when the TV is the bottleneck. A more capable soundbar cannot recover a format that never reaches it.
How a TV becomes the limiting point
When a source device sends audio to a TV, the TV may decode it, convert it, or pass it to a soundbar. Each operation can change what the soundbar receives. A streaming app running inside the TV follows the TV’s own audio-output rules. A game console or Blu-ray player connected to an HDMI input depends on that input’s pass-through behavior. The soundbar then has to recognize and decode the resulting signal.

That means a “Dolby Atmos” label on a soundbar describes its capability, not a guarantee that every TV setup will produce Atmos. If the source is outputting stereo, the TV is configured for PCM, or the return connection is limited to ARC, the bar receives something else. Sony’s support guidance summarizes the role of eARC this way: “The enhanced Audio Return Channel (eARC) is an improved version of the Audio Return Channel (ARC), is transferred through an HDMI® cable, and allows high quality sound to pass through the TV to decoding devices such as receivers and soundbars.” Sony’s eARC explanation also notes bandwidth of up to 37 Mbs for eARC; that is a capability figure, not a promise of better sound with every program.

The four links you must verify
- Source: The player, console or TV app must actually provide the desired format and be set to output it.
- TV input and processing: The HDMI input and the TV’s software must support pass-through for that format.
- Return connection: ARC, eARC, optical or another connection determines how much audio can travel to the bar.
- Soundbar decoder: The bar must support the delivered codec and channel layout.
ARC versus eARC: the bandwidth difference
ARC (Audio Return Channel) uses an HDMI connection to send TV audio back to a soundbar or receiver. eARC (enhanced Audio Return Channel) is a higher-bandwidth version designed for formats that exceed ordinary ARC’s capacity. Manufacturer tables are useful for understanding the distinction, but the exact formats still depend on the particular TV and soundbar.
| Capability | ARC | eARC | Qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compressed surround | Compressed 5.1 is commonly supported | Compressed 5.1 is supported | Samsung’s comparison describes these as feature-level capabilities; model specifications control the result. |
| Uncompressed multichannel PCM | Not generally available through ARC | Uncompressed 5.1 and 7.1 are listed | Confirm the TV’s stated pass-through formats. |
| Object-based or lossless formats | Limited by ARC bandwidth and implementation | Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS-HD Master Audio and Dolby TrueHD are among formats manufacturers list for eARC | A listed format is not universal pass-through support from every HDMI input or app. |
| Bandwidth | Lower than eARC | Up to 37 Mbs, according to Sony’s support page | Sony does not state a publication year on that page. |
Both ends must support eARC. If an eARC television is connected to an ARC-only soundbar, the connection operates within ARC specifications. Conversely, an eARC soundbar cannot make an ARC-only TV send eARC audio. Check the labels and specifications on both devices rather than assuming that an HDMI socket has the feature.
Why a soundbar feature may not work through your TV
The HDMI port is not the ARC/eARC port
Most televisions have several HDMI inputs, but only one is labeled ARC or eARC/ARC. Sony’s connection guidance warns that port availability can vary by model, region and country, and not every HDMI port on an example TV supports eARC. Plug the bar into the labeled port; moving the cable to a different input can remove the return-audio path entirely.

The TV does not pass the format from that source
A television may pass Atmos from an internal streaming app but convert audio from an HDMI game console to PCM, or support a format only on selected inputs. Sony publishes a model-specific pass-through format list for one television family, illustrating why a generic eARC claim is insufficient. Check the manual for the exact model, input type and source combination.
A setting is forcing conversion
Digital-output menus commonly offer PCM, Auto, Pass-Through or similarly named choices. PCM can be the most compatible option but may discard a source’s bitstream metadata or multichannel layout. Pass-Through asks the TV to forward the incoming signal without decoding when the model supports it. Samsung’s guidance recommends trying PCM, Auto and Pass-Through when an external device does not support the selected format; menu names and available choices vary by model year and region.
The source or soundtrack is different from the advertised feature
A streaming title may offer several audio tracks, and a console may have separate settings for bitstream, Dolby output or linear PCM. If the selected track is stereo, no cable or soundbar setting can create the original multichannel mix. Verify the player’s output mode and the title’s audio badge before troubleshooting the TV.

The cable or control handshake is incomplete
Use the cable type specified by the manuals. Sony recommends a High-Speed HDMI cable with Ethernet for eARC data transfer. HDMI-CEC (the control system used for power and input switching) may also need to be enabled so the TV recognizes the soundbar. A cable cannot add eARC to an ARC port, and replacing a cable will not add a codec that the TV does not pass.

Write down the exact model numbers and check each item in the manuals or support pages. The following matrix prevents the common mistake of comparing only soundbar logos.
| Check | What to look for | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| TV port | eARC, ARC or neither; the physical port label | Determines the return-channel ceiling. |
| TV pass-through | Formats supported from internal apps and each HDMI input | A TV may treat its apps and external inputs differently. |
| Soundbar decoding | Supported codecs, channel layouts and object-based formats | The bar must decode what the TV actually sends. |
| Soundbar HDMI input | Number of inputs and video pass-through formats | Allows a source to bypass a TV’s audio limitation. |
| Source output | Bitstream, PCM, Atmos/DTS options and selected soundtrack | The source controls the signal entering the chain. |
| Cable requirement | High-Speed HDMI with Ethernet or another specification stated by the manuals | Insufficient or incorrect cabling can prevent eARC negotiation. |
| Control settings | eARC mode, digital-output format and HDMI-CEC | These settings determine detection and pass-through behavior. |
Correct connection and settings, step by step
- Read both manuals first. Record the TV’s supported ARC/eARC formats and the soundbar’s decoder list. Note whether the TV limits formats from HDMI inputs or internal apps.
- Identify the correct sockets. Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the TV port labeled ARC or eARC/ARC and the other to the soundbar’s TV-ARC/eARC socket. Do not use an unlabeled TV HDMI input for the return link.
- Select the soundbar input. On the bar or remote, choose TV, HDMI ARC or the equivalent mode required by its manual.
- Change the TV’s speaker destination. In the sound settings, select Audio System, External Speakers or the model’s equivalent instead of TV Speakers. Sony’s audio-system connection guide documents this general path, while labels differ across brands.
- Enable eARC where available. Turn on eARC in the TV and soundbar menus. If either device is ARC-only, leave eARC disabled and work within ARC’s capabilities.
- Set digital output deliberately. Start with Pass-Through or Auto when the TV and bar support the source format. If there is no sound or the bar reports an unsupported signal, test PCM, then revisit the source and format lists. Samsung’s regional setup guide documents these options and warns that model-year menus differ.
- Check HDMI-CEC. Enable the TV’s HDMI control feature if the bar is not detected, inputs do not switch, or the TV repeatedly returns to its internal speakers. The brand may use a different name for CEC.
- Restart the handshake. Turn off the TV and soundbar, unplug both briefly, reconnect the HDMI cable firmly, then power on the TV followed by the bar. This can clear a failed capability negotiation without changing the audio format.
- Test with a known source. Use a source and title whose audio format is documented. Watch the soundbar’s information display or app to see whether it reports PCM, Dolby Digital, Atmos or another signal.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The soundbar is silent
- Confirm the cable is in the TV’s ARC/eARC port and the bar’s TV-ARC input.
- Switch the TV output from TV Speakers to the external audio system.
- Try PCM temporarily. If PCM works, the previous bitstream format may not be supported by the TV or bar.
- Check mute, volume limits and HDMI-CEC detection, then perform the power-cycle handshake reset.
You get sound, but only stereo or basic 5.1
- Verify that the source is not set to stereo or PCM-only.
- Check whether the TV’s manual lists the desired format for that particular HDMI input or internal app.
- Confirm that both the TV and soundbar support eARC if the format requires eARC bandwidth.
- Try a documented title with the intended soundtrack; not every program carries Atmos or lossless audio.
The TV reports an unsupported format or audio drops out
- Set the TV to Auto, Pass-Through or PCM in turn, allowing a few seconds after each change.
- Update neither device blindly; first consult its support page for model-specific firmware and menu behavior.
- Replace the cable only with the type required by the manuals, such as High-Speed HDMI with Ethernet for eARC.
- Test the source directly on the soundbar’s HDMI input to isolate the TV.
Bypassing an eARC-limited TV
If the TV has ARC only, lacks a return channel, or does not pass a needed codec, connect the source device directly to an HDMI input on the soundbar. Sony’s BRAVIA connection guidance identifies this as a way to deliver a higher-quality format such as Dolby Atmos when the TV lacks eARC.

This workaround has two conditions. First, the source and soundbar must both support the format. Second, the soundbar must pass the source’s video signal to the TV at the required resolution, refresh rate and HDR format. If it cannot, connect video directly to the TV and accept the TV’s audio limit, or use another routing arrangement supported by the manuals. Test each source separately; one console may pass through correctly while another does not.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Where optical fits
Optical is a useful alternative when HDMI ARC/eARC is unavailable or unreliable. Sony lists optical among the standard ways to connect an audio system. However, the manufacturer material reviewed here does not provide a universal optical codec matrix. Do not assume that every optical connection supports the same formats as ARC or eARC; check the exact TV and soundbar manuals. Optical also carries no HDMI-CEC control, so volume and power behavior may differ.
When upgrading a TV or soundbar makes sense
Upgrade the TV when its labeled ports or pass-through table exclude the formats you actually use and you need the TV’s internal apps or multiple HDMI sources to feed the bar. Upgrade the soundbar when the TV can deliver the desired signal but the bar lacks the corresponding decoder or an HDMI input for direct routing. If both devices already support the format, changing hardware is unlikely to improve a source that is outputting stereo or a title that lacks an immersive track.

Use the exact model specifications, not a logo on the box, as the deciding evidence. Regional editions and model years can have different ports and menu options, and an eARC connection does not automatically make every listed codec available from every source.
Frequently asked questions
Does a TV need eARC for Dolby Atmos?
Not always. A compatible Atmos signal may travel over ARC in compressed form, while uncompressed or lossless implementations generally require eARC. The exact answer depends on the source, TV pass-through behavior and soundbar decoder.
Will an eARC soundbar fix an ARC-only television?
No. The link falls back to ARC specifications. To use the bar’s higher-bandwidth input, the television or a direct source connection must provide eARC-level delivery.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIs eARC automatically higher quality than ARC?
eARC has more bandwidth and supports more signal types, but audible quality depends on the soundtrack and the signal that reaches the bar. With stereo or compressed content, eARC may provide no audible change.
Can a new HDMI cable add missing features?
No. Use the cable type required for a reliable connection, but a cable cannot add an eARC port, TV pass-through support or soundbar decoding capability.
