Most smartwatch cellular failures come from one of six causes: the watch is a Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi-only model, the carrier plan is not eligible or was never fully activated, cellular is disabled, the watch is still routing through the phone, its eSIM profile is inactive or stale, or local coverage/roaming does not support service. Work through the checks below in order. Restarting the watch and phone, confirming the exact model and plan, and having the watch’s EID, IMEI or ICCID ready for the carrier resolve many cases without a reset.
What “not connected to cellular network” means
A cellular or LTE watch has a modem and an eSIM that let it connect directly to a carrier when it is away from its paired phone. It can still show no cellular connection even when Bluetooth and Wi‑Fi work normally. Conversely, a watch may have an active plan but appear not to be using cellular because it is getting data through the phone or a known Wi‑Fi network.
Connection behavior differs by product and country. Apple Watch, Google Pixel Watch, other Wear OS watches and Samsung Galaxy Watch models use different menus and carrier rules. A plan that works for a phone is not automatically valid for a watch, and international roaming is not universal.

First identify which failure you have
| What you observe | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| No Cellular, Mobile or SIM option anywhere | Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi-only hardware or an unsupported regional model | Check the exact model number and regional specifications; settings cannot add LTE hardware. |
| Cellular option exists, but activation says the plan or carrier is unsupported | Carrier, geography, watch model or plan eligibility problem | Confirm the carrier supports that exact watch and ask whether a separate wearable line or add-on is required. |
| The watch works beside the phone but not when you leave it | It is using Bluetooth or Wi‑Fi rather than its modem | Turn off Bluetooth on the phone temporarily and test in an area with known carrier coverage. |
| A plan was added, but the watch shows no service or a network error | Incomplete carrier provisioning or an inactive/stale eSIM | Check SIM status, retry activation, then contact the carrier with the watch identifiers. |
| Service disappears only in one location or abroad | Weak local signal, unsupported destination or roaming restriction | Check the carrier’s coverage and roaming terms before changing the watch. |
1. Verify that the watch can use cellular service
Check hardware, model and region
Look at the watch’s box, About screen or manufacturer specifications for “Cellular,” “LTE” or “Mobile.” On Wear OS, Google says that if no Cellular setting appears, the watch does not support cellular service. A Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi-only watch cannot be upgraded through an app, band, signal booster or software setting.

Record the complete model number, not just the product family name. Cellular and non-cellular versions can look almost identical, and a model sold in one country may use bands or carrier certification that differ elsewhere. Confirm that your country, exact model and intended carrier appear on the carrier’s compatibility list. Apple requires an eligible plan with a supported carrier; Samsung’s LTE activation process likewise requires a matching carrier plan. See Wear OS cellular-watch guidance, Apple’s cellular setup requirements and Samsung’s LTE activation instructions.
Confirm the wearable plan is eligible
Most carriers require a watch-specific plan or an eligible phone plan with a wearable add-on. Activation may fail if the account is prepaid, suspended, in the wrong billing region, subject to a device restriction, or missing a required number-sharing feature. The carrier—not the watch’s Bluetooth connection—controls eligibility and eSIM provisioning.
Check the carrier account for an active wearable line, the correct device attached to it and a completed activation status. If you changed carriers, replaced the phone, bought the watch used, or had it repaired, the old eSIM association may still be present and the carrier may need to release and reprovision it.

Turn cellular on and airplane mode off
Open the watch’s connectivity controls and make sure Cellular or Mobile is enabled. Turn airplane mode off. A disabled radio or airplane mode can look like a carrier outage even when the plan is valid.

- Next-Generation 3nm Processor: Exynos W1000 chipset delivers significantly faster performance and smoother app navigation.
- Apple Watch: Open Control Center. A green Cellular button indicates a cellular connection; green bars show signal strength. A white Cellular button can mean the plan is active while the watch is currently using the paired iPhone or Wi‑Fi.
- Pixel Watch: Open Settings > Connectivity > Mobile and review the carrier and SIM status. In the Pixel Watch app, confirm Bluetooth, phone internet access and nearby-device permission are enabled.
- Other Wear OS watches: Menu names vary, but look under Settings > Connectivity for Mobile, Cellular or SIM. Google’s cellular-watch troubleshooting explains the general behavior.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE: Use the Galaxy Wearable app’s mobile-plan or LTE activation flow, then follow the carrier’s prompts. Samsung’s activation guide lists the required carrier setup.
Test the direct cellular route
A nearby phone can hide a cellular problem. The watch normally prefers Bluetooth, then known Wi‑Fi, before using its modem. For a safe test, leave the phone behind or temporarily disable the phone’s Bluetooth while keeping the watch in an area where the carrier has reliable coverage. Make a call or use a data-dependent watch app. Some features still require the phone, so failure of one particular app does not prove that LTE is broken.
On Wear OS, cellular is used automatically when Bluetooth is off. On Apple Watch, the status indicator can remain white while the plan is active because the watch has a faster phone or Wi‑Fi route available.
3. Restart both devices and retry activation
Restarting refreshes the modem, the phone-to-watch connection and a pending activation session. Do this before deleting an eSIM or erasing the watch.
Recommended Free Tools
- Place the watch on its charger if its battery is low.
- Power off the watch using its normal power menu, wait a few seconds, and turn it on again.
- Restart the paired phone.
- Open the watch companion app and retry the cellular or mobile-plan activation flow.
Apple’s support procedure adds a radio reset: turn airplane mode on for both the iPhone and Apple Watch, wait 15 seconds, turn it off, close and reopen the Watch app, and restart both devices. Follow the equivalent airplane-mode toggle on other watches if activation remains stuck. The Apple sequence is documented at Apple Support.

4. Inspect and repair the eSIM profile
Pixel Watch SIM-status checks
On a Pixel Watch, open Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > SIM status. Look for an inactive profile, missing carrier information or an error. If an existing eSIM is inactive, Google’s activation guidance says to use Mobile > Advanced and reset the eSIM, then run activation again. A reset removes the watch’s current cellular profile, so do not start it while you are travelling without another way to contact the carrier.
If the eSIM profile was deleted, use Mobile > Advanced to add it again through the carrier activation flow. Some carriers may require that you call to reactivate the eSIM, according to Google Pixel Watch Help. After a plan is activated, restart a watch that is no longer paired with its phone; Google identifies that pairing state as a possible reason it will not connect.
When an eSIM reset is not the answer
An eSIM reset cannot make an unsupported model eligible, repair a suspended account or create coverage where none exists. If activation fails repeatedly, stop deleting profiles and move to carrier provisioning. Repeated attempts can leave you with no usable profile until the carrier issues a new one.

- Rotating Bezel Design: Classic rotating bezel enables precise control and smooth navigation.
- The exact watch model and regional variant are supported on the carrier’s network.
- The wearable line or add-on is active, paid and attached to the correct account.
- The eSIM activation is complete and the profile is not stale, suspended or tied to a previous device.
- Number sharing, voice, messaging and data permissions required by that watch are enabled.
- The current local network has not blocked the device after a repair or replacement.
Have the watch’s EID, IMEI and, when shown, ICCID available. Samsung specifically advises providing these identifiers when activating LTE; Apple and Google also direct unresolved setup and profile problems to the carrier. Find them in the watch’s About or device-information screen, or in the companion app. Do not attempt to bypass carrier compatibility or activation controls.
6. Rule out coverage, signal and roaming limits
Check local signal
An activated watch can still show no service in a basement, elevator, rural area or building with heavy shielding. Pixel Watch SIM status includes signal information; Apple displays green signal bars in Control Center. Move outdoors or to a known coverage area and test again. If a phone on the same carrier also has no signal there, the watch is unlikely to be the only problem.
Understand international use
Roaming depends on the carrier, destination and watch model. Apple says availability depends on the carrier and destination coverage, while Wear OS documentation notes that international roaming is not fully supported. Before relying on the watch abroad, ask the carrier whether your specific wearable line supports roaming in the destination country, what network it uses and whether voice and data are included. A domestic activation does not guarantee overseas service.

A factory reset erases apps, settings and data. Google presents reset as a remedy for persistent pairing and watch problems, not as the first response to a carrier-provisioning error. Try the restart, airplane-mode toggle, model and plan checks, and eSIM/carrier steps first.

If support directs you to reset, back up anything the companion app can save, keep the phone and account credentials available, and ensure you can complete activation again. After the reset, pair the watch to the phone, install updates, and run the carrier activation flow from the beginning. If the same plan error returns, the reset has demonstrated that provisioning—not local watch data—is the unresolved issue.
Device-specific menu and status reference
| Platform | Where to look | Meaning of the status |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch | Control Center; Watch app for plan setup | Green Cellular button means connected; green bars indicate signal. White Cellular can mean an active plan with Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi currently preferred. |
| Google Pixel Watch | Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > SIM status; Mobile > Advanced for eSIM actions | SIM status exposes profile and signal conditions; Advanced contains reset or re-add controls described by Google. |
| Other Wear OS watches | Settings > Connectivity, then Mobile, Cellular or SIM | No Cellular setting generally means the model lacks cellular support; cellular is normally selected when Bluetooth is unavailable. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch LTE | Galaxy Wearable app’s mobile-plan/LTE activation flow | Activation depends on a matching carrier plan and successful carrier provisioning. |
When replacing the watch is justified
Replacement is reasonable only after confirming that the existing watch lacks cellular hardware, is an incompatible regional variant, or has a hardware fault diagnosed by the manufacturer or carrier. Choose a carrier-compatible LTE model and verify the exact model, region and carrier before buying. A new band, cable, generic signal booster or repair utility will not add LTE capability or fix an unprovisioned eSIM.
If the watch previously connected and stopped immediately after physical damage or repair, document the repair date and ask the carrier and manufacturer to check the modem and device identifiers before purchasing another watch. A carrier may need to move the wearable line to the replacement device.
Quick Recap
Prevent the problem from returning
- Keep the watch, phone and companion app updated, but do not assume an update substitutes for carrier activation.
- Save the watch’s EID and IMEI with your account details so a carrier can identify it quickly.
- Before changing carriers or phones, ask how to transfer the wearable line and eSIM.
- After travel, repairs or a long period powered off, check the plan and SIM status before leaving the phone behind.
- Test direct cellular service in a safe, known-coverage location rather than judging it while the phone is beside the watch.
