A Samsung SmartTag can beep because SmartThings Find is ringing it, because it is confirming pairing, or—on SmartTag2—because it did not recognize the battery immediately after insertion. If it beeps at random with no clear trigger, Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance does not establish a definitive cause. Start with the timing and model, then check the battery and follow that model’s reset instructions.
First, match the beep to what was happening
The timing can help distinguish a normal sound from a problem worth troubleshooting.
- You tapped Ring: SmartThings Find is designed to make the tag beep so you can locate it nearby. Stop the Ring function in the app when you have found the tag. Samsung’s Ring instructions.
- You were pairing the tag: Samsung documents a sound confirmation during pairing mode. If the sound happened during setup, it may be a setup cue rather than a fault. Samsung’s pairing instructions.
- You just inserted a SmartTag2 battery: Samsung says an immediate sound can mean the battery was not properly recognized. Remove and reinsert it, and check the terminals as described in Samsung’s SmartTag2 troubleshooting guidance.
- It beeps repeatedly or seemingly at random: Samsung’s troubleshooting page does not identify a definitive cause or a dedicated fix for this exact symptom. Check for a recent Ring action, inspect battery seating, and then use the reset guidance for your exact model.
Identify your SmartTag model before opening it
Samsung gives different battery and reset instructions for the original SmartTag and SmartTag+ than for SmartTag2. Confirm the generation first, then use the corresponding guidance rather than applying one model’s procedure to another. Samsung’s SmartTag2 product and support page lists its global user manual.

Check the battery without assuming it caused the beep
For SmartTag2
If the sound began immediately after inserting a battery, reseat it and inspect the terminals. Samsung recommends reinserting the battery and wiping the terminals when troubleshooting power problems. That is a relevant check, but it does not prove that a later or recurring beep is caused by the battery.
#1 Best Overall
- Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff

For SmartTag and SmartTag+
Samsung specifies a CR2032 battery for these models. Its US support guide says SmartThings displays the current battery level and recommends replacing a depleted cell. Samsung estimates the cell may last about a year, depending on use and other factors; treat that as an estimate, not a guarantee. Follow the guide for your model: Samsung SmartTag battery instructions.
SmartTag2 battery-life figures
Samsung reported up to 500 days in typical use and 700 days or more with Power Saving Mode for SmartTag2. These are Samsung figures based on internal lab tests, not guaranteed real-world results; the company says actual life varies with usage, environmental conditions, battery manufacturer, and other factors. Reset only with the instructions for your generation
A model-specific reset is a reasonable next step if checking battery seating does not resolve the symptom. Samsung’s procedures differ:
- SmartTag2: Use the supplied ejection pin or a clip to remove the battery tray, then follow Samsung’s tray-and-battery reset sequence, including holding the button for more than seven seconds. See Samsung’s SmartTag2 troubleshooting instructions.
- SmartTag or SmartTag+: Samsung’s guide describes a different procedure involving battery removal and a button hold. Follow the steps in Samsung’s instructions for these models.
If the beeping persists after the appropriate troubleshooting steps, contact Samsung support for help with the exact model.
