A Samsung Galaxy connects to 5G only when the exact phone model supports the carrier’s network, 5G service is available where you are, your plan and account are eligible, your SIM is compatible, and the phone’s network mode allows 5G. If any condition is missing, the phone may use LTE/4G or 3G instead. Check those factors before assuming the phone is faulty.
Why 5G may not appear on your Galaxy
Seeing LTE or 4G instead of 5G does not by itself mean something is broken. Samsung says a phone may fall back to LTE/4G or 3G where 5G is unavailable. Coverage depends on your carrier and location, so service can differ between places on the same trip. Ask your carrier whether 5G is available where you are using the phone. Samsung’s US 5G guidance explains the relevant prerequisites and fallback behavior.
A 5G-capable Galaxy also needs to be compatible with the carrier’s network. Confirm the exact model and market variant—rather than relying only on the Galaxy product family name—with the carrier or Samsung. The same check should establish whether your plan and account include 5G access and whether your SIM is eligible. Samsung notes that some older SIM cards may not be compatible; ask the carrier whether your current SIM needs replacement or reprovisioning. The selected network mode must include 5G. Menu names vary by model, region, and software version, so use Settings search if the labels below do not match your phone.

- Samsung US example: Open Settings, search for Network mode, and choose an available option that includes 5G or GLOBAL. See Samsung US support.
- Samsung Gulf example: Open Settings > Connections > Mobile Network > Network Mode, then choose an option containing 5G. See Samsung Gulf support.
Use an option actually offered on your device; do not assume every region or model displays the same choices.
Work through these checks in order
- Check coverage at your current location. Ask your carrier whether it offers 5G where you are. If 5G is unavailable there, LTE/4G or 3G fallback can be normal. Samsung US describes this behavior.
- Verify the exact phone model and carrier compatibility. Find the model number in your phone’s settings or on its packaging, then ask the carrier whether that specific model variant supports its 5G network. Samsung’s general guidance does not confirm compatibility for every Galaxy variant.
- Confirm plan and account eligibility. Ask the carrier whether your particular plan includes 5G and whether there is an account or service-provisioning issue.
- Check SIM eligibility. Ask whether the SIM in the phone is supported for 5G on your account and whether it needs replacement or reprovisioning. Samsung advises using the SIM supplied with the device or a 5G-compatible SIM from the carrier; a generic SIM is not a universal fix. See Samsung Singapore support.
- Make sure network mode includes 5G. Use Settings search or the regional menu example above to check the available modes.
- Restart the phone. Samsung recommends restarting as a troubleshooting step. If the issue persists, contact the carrier to check coverage, plan access, account status, and SIM provisioning. Samsung US support recommends carrier assistance when the problem remains.
- Check for a software update. Samsung Gulf includes checking for updates among its troubleshooting steps. Treat this as a reasonable device-specific check, not a guaranteed fix. See Samsung Gulf support.
When to contact your carrier
Contact the carrier if your exact Galaxy model is supported, your network mode includes 5G, and the problem continues. Ask it to confirm four things for your specific location and account:

- Whether 5G coverage is available where the connection is failing.
- Whether your plan and account are provisioned for 5G.
- Whether your exact phone model and regional variant are supported.
- Whether the SIM is 5G-compatible and correctly provisioned.
These checks help distinguish a local coverage or account issue from a phone setting. The available Samsung guidance does not establish a universal purchase or repair remedy for an unspecified Galaxy, carrier, and location.
