A Galaxy phone and its power adapter can get warm while charging, especially during fast or wireless charging. Warmth alone does not prove there is a fault. If the phone feels excessively hot, charging slows or stops, or overheating keeps happening, disconnect it, let it cool, and check what may be adding heat before charging again.
Why a Samsung phone gets warm while charging
Charging creates heat
Some warmth from the phone and adapter is normal. Samsung says fast charging and wireless charging can feel warmer than ordinary charging. If the phone gets too hot, it may reduce charging speed or temporarily stop charging to protect itself. Samsung’s charging guidance explains this protective behavior.
Using the phone adds workload
Gaming, video, browsing, navigation, downloads, and other demanding tasks can add heat while the phone is charging. Setup, data restoration, file transfers, recording, hotspot use, background apps, and weak-signal conditions can also make the phone work harder. Samsung notes that using the phone during charging may slow charging to help prevent overheating. Pause demanding tasks and close apps if the phone feels hot. See Samsung’s overheating guidance.

Accessories, wireless charging, and surroundings can contribute
A damaged or incompatible charger or cable can cause charging trouble. With wireless charging, metal objects, magnets, or cards between the phone and pad can contribute to heat; a case may also trap heat in some circumstances. Hot locations, direct sunlight, and enclosed spaces can raise the phone’s temperature as well.

What to check before charging again
- Where the heat is: If heat is concentrated near the cable or charging port, stop charging and inspect the cable and port. Do not continue using a visibly damaged cable; Samsung recommends compatible, approved accessories.
- What the phone was doing: Consider whether gaming, navigation, video, downloads, setup, or another intensive task was running during charging. Pause that activity and close running apps.
- Where and how it was charging: Move the phone out of direct sun or a hot, enclosed place. For wireless charging, remove metal, magnets, and cards from between the phone and pad. If the phone is hot, remove its case and let it cool before trying again.
- Whether charging is slow or paused: A slowdown or temporary stop can be a response to high temperature, not proof of a failed battery. Samsung’s slow-charging support also lists port debris and charging settings among possible issues; exact settings and menu names vary by model and software.
How to cool the phone and troubleshoot safely
- Disconnect it if it feels excessively hot. Stop demanding tasks, close running apps, and let the phone cool naturally before charging again.
- Choose a cooler, open location. Keep the phone away from direct sunlight, hot surroundings, bedding, and enclosed spaces. Do not cover it while it charges.
- Inspect the wired accessories. Check the adapter and cable for visible damage, and confirm the accessories are compatible with your exact Galaxy model. Replace a damaged cable; if the port appears damaged, seek service rather than probing or forcing the connector.
- Clear wireless-charging interference. Remove metal objects, magnets, and cards from between the phone and pad. If the device became hot, remove the case and let it cool before retrying.
- Try again only after it has cooled. If charging still slows or stops, or the phone repeatedly overheats after these checks, contact Samsung support or a service center. Persistent charging trouble can indicate a hardware issue.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop charging and arrange help if the phone repeatedly overheats after cooling and checking its surroundings and accessories, if charging problems persist, or if heat or visible damage is near the cable or port. Samsung’s guidance can help identify common conditions, but it cannot diagnose an individual handset; the right next step for recurring trouble is support or service.
