A Samsung Galaxy phone can freeze because of outdated software, background apps, low available memory, or a temporary system error. If only the touchscreen stops registering taps, the cause may instead be an app, screen damage, or an accessory interfering with the display. The right fix depends on whether the whole phone is stuck, the problem keeps returning, or touch alone is affected.
What can make a Samsung phone freeze?
Samsung lists outdated software, apps running in the background, insufficient available memory, and temporary system errors as possible causes of a slow or unresponsive Galaxy device. Downloaded apps can also cause freezing, crashing, or lag. These are possibilities, not a diagnosis of any particular phone; Samsung does not state which cause is most common.
A frozen screen is not always the same as a frozen phone. If buttons or audio still respond but taps do not, troubleshoot the touchscreen separately. A faulty app, cracks in the display, or an accessory touching the screen can interfere with touch response. Force-restart the phone
Press and hold the Side key and Volume Down key together until the device restarts. Samsung’s US performance guidance says to hold them for more than seven seconds; its frozen-screen instructions give a range of 7–10 seconds. Button names and layouts vary by model, so follow the instructions for your specific Galaxy if this combination does not work. A forced restart is intended to restart a stuck device; it is not a factory reset.

How to reduce recurring freezes
Close apps and check available memory
Close apps you are no longer using. Where available, open Settings > Device care to review device status and free memory. The exact menu labels and available controls can vary with the Galaxy model and software version.

Restart normally and install software updates
Restart the phone normally, then check for updates under Settings > Software update. Menu wording can vary by device, carrier, and software version. Samsung’s UK performance troubleshooting page, updated July 16, 2026, covers these general checks.
Run Samsung Members diagnostics
If Samsung Members is installed on your Galaxy, use its Phone diagnostics to check the device. Availability and diagnostic options depend on the device and app.

How to check whether a downloaded app is responsible
Safe mode starts the phone with downloaded apps disabled and the original software loaded. Use Samsung’s model-specific instructions to enter Safe mode; the exact steps depend on the device.
- Start the phone in Safe mode using the instructions for your Galaxy model.
- Use the phone as usual and see whether the freezing or lag continues.
- If the problem stops in Safe mode, uninstall recently added or suspect downloaded apps one at a time, testing the phone after each removal.
If the phone still freezes in Safe mode, that does not identify a specific fault, but it makes a downloaded app a less likely explanation. Samsung’s slow or unresponsive device guidance includes steps for checking performance and apps.

What to check when touch alone stops working
- Remove the case, screen protector, or other accessory that may be touching the display, then test the screen again. Samsung advises checking accessories that may interfere with touch.
- Make sure the screen is clean and dry.
- Check whether the display is cracked. If damage is visible or touch still fails after removing accessories, contact Samsung Support.
Some Galaxy models have a Touch sensitivity setting; its availability and menu location vary. These checks address touch response specifically and are not a general fix for a phone whose entire system is frozen. Samsung’s screen troubleshooting page provides the relevant guidance.
When to reset or seek service
If the phone keeps freezing after you have restarted it, checked updates and memory, and tested Safe mode, contact Samsung Support or arrange service—especially if you suspect physical damage. Troubleshooting cannot confirm a hardware fault without an inspection.

A factory reset is a later option, not the first response to a freeze. It erases data, so back up important information before resetting. Samsung lists reset among its troubleshooting options for slow or unresponsive devices.
