If your Samsung keeps flashing the Samsung logo or never gets past it, your Galaxy phone or tablet may be stuck at the startup screen—a condition often called a boot loop. The logo alone does not identify the cause: software trouble, a discharged battery, a downloaded app, or a hardware fault are all possible. Try the low-risk checks below first, and leave a factory reset until last because it erases data.
What the flashing Samsung logo tells you
A logo that stays on screen or repeatedly appears as the device restarts is a boot symptom, not a diagnosis. The pattern, Galaxy model, software version, recent updates or app installs, charging behavior, and any physical damage can all help narrow it down. Samsung lists software glitches, low battery, incompatible or downloaded apps, and hardware issues among possible causes; none can be confirmed from the logo alone. Menu names and button steps can vary by model and software version. Samsung’s boot-loop guidance and Galaxy troubleshooting guidance provide model-specific context.
Start with checks that do not erase data
1. Inspect for damage or obstruction
Check the screen and body for cracks or impact damage, and look at the charging port for visible damage or corrosion. If the device has been exposed to liquid or shows physical damage, stop troubleshooting and arrange professional inspection. Do not open the phone or guess at which component needs replacement. Samsung recommends service when damage is present. See Samsung’s guidance.

2. Charge the device
Connect a Samsung-certified charger and cable that are compatible with your Galaxy model. Leave it connected even if the screen shows no charging indicator; a fully discharged battery may not display one immediately. If you suspect the charger or cable, try a known-good compatible set. Charging can address a power problem, but it will not repair a software fault or hardware damage. Samsung’s charging advice covers this check.

3. Restart the phone or tablet
If the power menu opens, select Restart. If the device is frozen, Samsung’s general guidance is to hold the Side and Volume down buttons for more than seven seconds, until it restarts. Button names and behavior differ across Galaxy models; if that combination does not match your device, use the instructions for your exact model on Samsung Support. Samsung’s boot-loop instructions describe the restart option.
Check whether a downloaded app may be involved
Use Safe mode if you can reach the required power options
Safe mode starts the device with core software and disables downloaded apps. If the Galaxy runs normally in Safe mode, a recently downloaded app may be contributing to the problem. Uninstall recent apps one at a time, restarting and checking after each removal. If the logo problem continues in Safe mode, that is a reason to seek service; it is not proof that a particular component has failed. Samsung recommends inspection when the issue persists there. If the phone cannot reach the power options needed to enter Safe mode, skip this test rather than guessing at a model-specific button sequence.

Try Smart Switch only if a computer recognizes the device
Samsung’s Smart Switch application for Windows or Mac may offer an Update option if an update is available. Connect the Galaxy with its USB cable, keep it connected throughout the update, and do not use the device until the process completes. This is not a guaranteed recovery route for every device stuck on the logo. Samsung’s Smart Switch guidance describes the update option.

Samsung also documents Emergency Software Recovery for certain devices affected by an update error. If that recovery repeatedly fails on one computer, Samsung’s instructions describe using the emergency recovery code on another computer. This procedure applies to qualifying update-error situations; it is not a promise that Smart Switch can detect or restore every unresponsive Galaxy. A factory data reset removes the device’s data and content. Samsung says it should be considered only after the previous troubleshooting steps; back up personal information first if the device allows it. Google also warns that resetting removes phone data and recommends backing up beforehand: Google’s reset guidance.

If your important data is not backed up, do not treat reset as a harmless test. Contact Samsung Support or a service center first to ask about options for your situation. If you choose to proceed, use the reset instructions for your exact model and software version; recovery-menu steps can vary.

Arrange professional help if the device has visible damage or liquid exposure, will not charge or restart after the checks above, remains stuck in Safe mode, is not recognized for a Smart Switch update, or cannot complete setup. Samsung provides service-center and repair options in its U.S. guidance; availability and routes vary by location. Check Samsung’s troubleshooting and service guidance for your region.
